Our experimental system, consisting of a cell phone and a compact cellular visual computer, is able to detect and recognize objects and understand basic events around the user in predefined situations to help them in everyday tasks. We developed algorithms for two important new tasks: pedestrian crosswalk detection and identification of gender pictograms.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134246244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a fully-coupled system without delays, we propose simple modifications to the state-of-the-art. We prove that the resulting system converges to full in-phase synchronization of all oscillators from arbitrary initial conditions. For systems with arbitrarily distributed delays we propose a second, related approach. We prove that here a state close to synchrony is globally and asymptotically stable, such that all oscillators lock up to a certain precision from arbitrary initial conditions. The precision of synchronization is determined by the coupling strength and the maximal delay appearing.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134414857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing studies e.g., of IEEE 802.11 DCF or S-ALOHA, mostly rely on stations' unique identities and farsightedness (fear of punishment or discounting future utilities). In contrast, we model selfish stations as both secretive (unwilling to betray identity) and short-sighted. We study a contention scheme called session-level bidding in terms of a Bayesian (incomplete-information) game and analyze the stations' utilities and network throughput arising at a symmetrical Bayesian equilibrium.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"255 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133709165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To exploit the benefits of cooperative transmission properly, we use the block-Markov encoding. Recently, an operational implementation of this information theoretic coding strategy, using network coding, has been proposed. In this paper, we give the achievable diversity and the multiplexing tradeoff curve for the proposed network coding based cooperative communications. With numerical results, we show that the cooperative transmission using network coding outperforms both the repetition and the space-time (ST) coding based cooperative communications, in terms of diversity-multiplexing tradeoff.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133678746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A main reason for this is that consumer-owed utility companies have decided to invest heavily in the field, to a large extent with the philosophy that, since all consumers are a part of the investment, everybody should also benefit from it. As a result of these investments, FTTH availability and penetration has increased significantly over the last years. In the end of the paper, we highlight the importance of studying the actual impact of bringing FTTH to these areas.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134473924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system aims at providing an indication on the balance of the lateral ligaments. The measures will be used to estimate the wear out of the polyethylene part of the prosthesis and will also facilitate the patient rehab. The data will be transmitted outside the body through an RF link. Unlike other instrumented implants, the system will be self-powered. Piezo ceramics will be used both as pressure sensors and as power generators. This implies that the measurement system must be ultra low power as the available power is less than 1.8 mW. First simulation results are given for a 0.35 ¿m CMOS process.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"487 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124421935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, An architecture for Human Activity Recognition using a Visual Sensor Network is proposed. The video sequence perceived by each camera is locally processed to obtain a local activity label. These activity labels are fused by an upper tier to obtain a global activity label. The activities recognized by the system are not specified a priori, they are discovered using automatic model selection techniques. Then, an expert has to label the discovered activities to give them a semantic meaning. Results of the application of the activity discovering procedure to a smart home dataset are shown.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129763045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This should aid the otolaryngologist in the identification of anatomical landmarks whilst training and performing surgical procedures. The approach adopts the mel frequency cepstrum coefficients and the Mahalanobis distance metric to indentify the temporal bone regions from the acoustic signature of the surgical drill. Audio data from a mastoidectomy, that involved the dissection of the sigmoid sinus, thin tegmen and thick tegmen bone regions with diamond and cutting type burrs of sizes 6mm, 3mm and 1mm were analysed. An identification accuracy of 97.72 ± 1.77 % was achieved with the mel frequency cepstrum approach. This is a significant improvement over the previous approach that utilises the power spectral density and the correlation coefficient to identify the same bone regions only 90.59 ± 1.58 % of the time. Three case studies were considered as a feasibility study for the implementation of this method into a smart embedded drill environment. With a priori knowledge of the burr type, an identification accuracy of 96.54 ± 4.12 % was achieved. When the burr type was not considered this accuracy decreased to 94.2 ± 3.17 %. An accuracy of 90.88 ± 7.53 % was obtained when identifying both the tool type and the bone region from the drill sound.","PeriodicalId":273041,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127484053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
