The mission objective is to demonstrate the capability of medium high resolution remote sensing using a cost effective mini-satellite platform and a multi-channel linear push-broom electro-optical instrument. This program has unique advantages for monitoring the environmental changes and mitigating disasters over equatorial regions due to short revisit characteristics from the baseline circular orbit of 685 km of altitude and 7 degrees of inclination. MACSAT is optimized to accommodate the mission payload, Medium-sized Aperture Camera, which is a push-broom type camera with swath width of 20 km. The satellite has +/-30 degrees of tilting and 30 Mbps X-band downlink capability. This paper describes the overview of the MACSAT program, focusing on the key technical and operational aspects of the mission, and provides an update to the status of the mission as of October 2003.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. The recent launch of e-government initiative called e-Mexico and specially related to the nation-wide deployment of e-kiosks for social and educational services through a satellite system has created an important milestone and a positive impact on the growth rate over the rest of the broadband networks and services offered around the country. A tele-density analysis, plus fixed, mobile and major local satellite players positioning and their user penetration services are discussed versus Mexican market conditions and technology infrastructure trends.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. Thus, there is a strong interest in developing data encoding and decoding algorithms that can obtain higher compression ratios while keeping image quality to an acceptable level. This study aims to compare most of the well-known compression techniques namely discrete cosine transform and discrete wavelet transform. It investigates RADARSAT and SPOT images of different regions of different characteristics. RADARSAT-1 fine and standard beam mode images of the different regions in Istanbul are used to test the performance of the compression algorithms. The regions, which have been investigated, were sea areas, forest areas, built environment-residential and industrial areas which define different patterns of urban land use. The studies showed that homogeneous areas like forest and sea gave better compression results compared to heterogeneous areas like industrial and environmental. The second purpose of this study is to compare the two compression algorithms. The discrete wavelet based algorithm gave much better results compared to the discrete cosine transform based algorithm. The results changed according to the quantization process and the transform-coding algorithm.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. In this paper we explain how to apply nonparametric approaches to SAR imaging. We present an important nonparametric spectral estimation method which is the Capon algorithm. We compare the Capon method with other nonparametric methods such as APES, Periodogram, and FFT for their resolution, sidelobe levels, and spectral peaks. And we also show by means of experimental examples that the forward-backward Capon gives much better estimation than the forward only Capon.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. The most important feature of hierarchical classification is to break down a complex decision-making process into a collection of simpler decisions. In order to achieve more complex analysis it is advantageous to use binary decision trees, in which the decision between only two classes must be assigned at each node. Pixel based feature extraction methods reduce classification performance because of the speckle and also conventional texture analysis is not applicable to every part of an image. Therefore, a decision-making process, which can be applied to every pixel of an image, is required. The results show that computation time and accuracy of classification process are improved.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. In this paper, we present a rigid search-space reducing, feature-based adaptive image registration scheme to put images in correspondence, without establishing explicit point correspondences. Our method estimates the registration parameters using a feature set, which is based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A unique aspect of the method is the incorporation of a learning process to learn the parameters from a training set of images, which is constructed incrementally. We illustrate the robustness of this approach using a number of remote sensing images and a variety of rotation angles. Mapping between the features and the transformation parameters is via a nearest-mean matching scheme. Hence correct orientation is determined within a predetermined error.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. RAST '03. The extent to which time-slot conflicts are avoided is quantified as a function of TDMA system parameters such as frame length, time-slot sizes, and type of satellite orbit - geosynchronous, low-Earth orbit (LEO), or middle-Earth orbit (MEO). A technique that increases the availability of conflict-free regions of the TDMA frame is described, and the advantage offered by this technique is quantified as a function of the TDMA system parameters. Examples based on existing TDMA systems are illustrated.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. RAST '03. Digital transmission through WSSUS channel model with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) introduced at the receiver. For observing the performance of the turbo decoder, COST207 (COoperation in the field of Science & Technology, Project #207) models (statistical channel models) based on WSSUS channel model are considered. Before decoding, the inverse filtering applied to equalize the corrupted data. LMS, RLS and Kalman algorithms are used for estimating inverse filter coefficients. Turbo decoder and its efficient implementation are discussed, and simulation results are presented.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. Sometimes the release of energy during the preparation of the significant seismic phenomena could be indicated by the specific position of the relatively lower clouds. The correlation of the data for the lower cloud's distribution with the seismic information is the main task of the investigation. The new idea consists in the application of the analysis of meteorological images for the seismic and the seismotectonic investigations. The studied cloud-fault relations could be to put in practice like one of numerous indicators for the short-term seismic prognosis.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003.
