It consists of using unequal three-tone signal to drive either the base station power amplifier's transmitter or the satellite transponder's power amplifier and to measure the level of these tones at the output of the transmitter/transponder. By comparison of the spectrum at the input and output of the PA, one can calculate the AM-AM compression factor and the AM-PM conversion coefficient of the power amplifier of the transmitter or transponder using close form expressions.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. ERS-2 amplitude images which are reconstructed via wide focusing algorithm for Istanbul, Turkey are used. During the study, a statistical point of view is considered. High reflectance regions are detected by comparing the threshold value and the local means of sites which are calculated by a 3/spl times/3 sliding window. As a result of the study, high reflectance areas which are determined via given approach for the ERS-2 image of Bosphorus, Istanbul, Turkey are clearly visible. Parameters such as total mean and total standard deviation of the image that are needed for the extraction process are given, and histogram of the image is plotted. Wide focus algorithm which is used for the reconstruction of the image is also presented.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. We implement an iterative restoration algorithm on ERS-2 images of Istanbul, Turkey. We consider restoration to be a process that attempts to reconstruct or recover an image that is degraded by using some a priori knowledge of the degradation phenomenon. A degraded image often has a noise term. Speckle noise exists in all types of coherent imaging systems and its presence reduces the resolution of the image and detectibility of the target. The method handled in the study is based on a total sum preserving regularization (TSPR) concept. The basic property of the TSPR method is that it preserves the mean values of local homogeneous regions and reduces speckle noise effectively. We obtain the original image from a degraded observed image. At each step of the technique the current pixel value depends on its neighbour ones, according to some regularizing parameters.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. Given the affordability and useful performance of micro-satellites, a long term national programme can be designed around micro-satellites. This paper describes a multiple satellite programme, the ZASat programme as it relates to the objectives that can be achieved through a micro-satellite programme in South Africa, given the current level of South African technology development and the growing interest by various user communities to use space technology. In particular the ZASat programme will make use of the emerging space technologies and show how these can be applied for cost-effective micro-satellite missions through various ways of innovation.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. October, 2001 with the PSLV-C3 from Shar/India successfully into a sun-synchronous low Earth orbit at 560 km. Besides the successful in-orbit test of the detection and evaluation of vegetation fires with micro satellites, BIRD has also been demonstrating a number of advanced spacecraft bus technologies, especially in the field of satellite autonomy and fault detection and protection. A number of ingenious features make it possible to operate the 92 kg satellite in a comfortable and safely way. Special features include the autonomous management of onboard computer failures, surveillance and response to critical parameters limit exceeding, system attitude anomalies. A robust redundancy philosophy and optimised ground-spacecraft interaction concept has contributed to the success of the BIRD mission, which was designed to operate for one year and has completed now its second year of operation. The paper describes the related new technologies and the results from the experience with BIRD.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. The remarkable coding gains achieved by turbo code have a great influence in various areas of digital communication, including cellular mobile, deep space communications and satellite communication. The basic idea is that two or more a posteriori probability decoders exchange soft information. One of the decoders calculates the a posteriori probability distribution of the information sequence and passes that information to the next decoder. The new decoder uses this information and computes its own version of the probability distribution. This exchange of information is called an iteration. After a certain number of iterations, a decision is made at the second decoder. For each iteration, the probability that we decode in favour of the correct decision will improve. At the last iteration, the hard decision is made using the soft decision of the last decoder.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. In this study, localization process was realized on a mobile robot, Nomad 200, using its odometry and gyro measurements. These sensors information was integrated, by extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm. On the other hand, on a given planetary surface, which can be obtained by using many separated cameras or using backpropagated beacons, a lot of safely traveled paths are formed due to the vehicle mission. A path selection was constructed due to its cost function among the selected paths. In this part, vehicle is forced to select a proper path to reach its target. This selection is performed using cost function of these paths. Cost values are strictly bounded to the surface of the planet. Only simulation results of this section were given. We believe that this path selection study presented here will satisfy valuable results on a real robotic vehicle that is suitable to navigate a planet like a rover.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. For precision landing and take-off of an aircraft, the Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) is needed to enhance the navigation accuracy, integrity, reliability and availability. Present study simulates the concept of LAAS and has established a ground-based Real-Time DGPS (RT-DGPS) reference station. This base station provides 0.5-meter RMS error and 0.2-meter correction for static horizontal navigation and 1.1-meter RMS error and 2-meter correction for dynamic horizontal navigation. The verification of pseudo-attitude in flight is also accomplished in an ultralight vehicle. The flight test combined with the RT-DGPS technique has qualitatively demonstrated that the GPS-determined attitude is feasible and quantitatively proved the pseudo-roll and pseudo-heading angles are especially reliable.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003.
