Two high-profile projects on board one of the Space Shuttle's highest-visibility flights, Space Transportation System (STS) 95, demonstrated its successful use in Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) and Fiber Optic Flight Experiment (FOFE) applications. STS95 was the John Glenn flight. For IVHM, single mode fiber was used for strain and temperature sensing associated with the engine pitch actuator strut, and multi-mode fiber was used for communication associated with detection of gaseous hydrogen in the Shuttle aft area. For FOFE, multi-mode fiber was used as a communications medium, enabling the transfer of Hubble Space Telescope Orbiting Systems Test (HOST) data through a fiber bus to the Payload General Support Computer. The success of the IVHM and FOFE applications has resulted in baselining optics into space programs.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. AAU-cubesat was among the first five satellites to be launched that are built within the cubesat concept that prescribes a satellite with dimensions 10/spl times/10/spl times/10 cm and mass one kilogram. These constraints clearly limits the possibilities for the satellite in terms of possible scientific missions, but on the other hand: by building satellites of this size a technology push is created that in the future will help to reduce the size of both scientific and commercial satellites and thus help to drive down the launch cost. In this paper described the overall architecture of the AAU-cubesat in order to show what a pico-satellite can be and demonstrate all the fields of engineering which must come together to built a student satellite like the AAU-cubesat. Results from the operation phase will be stated, and recommendations on further work on pico-satellite designs will be given. In addition as the project has been carried through by students then the educational value of the project will be addressed as well.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. In homing-guidance systems for SA missiles-proportional navigation is most commonly used, and also improved solutions and optimal guidance laws based on modern control theory. In the synthesis of these laws-reduced and linearized models are used, which are obtained from general laws for mobile objects (target and missile) under some assumptions. All systems for guidance and control of SA missiles are complex and typically non-linear. Also there is a need for neutralizing of targets with high range of parameter changes (acceleration, velocity and height), in different shooting regimes (incoming, outgoing etc.). In order to provide quality process and small guidance error-we have applied fuzzy logic to obtain some parameters for the guidance law. In this paper we present results from investigation of different guidance laws for hypothetic SA missile. We have investigated classical proportional navigation-PN, augmented proportional navigation-APN, and optimal guidance laws for different shooting conditions. The results from fuzzy guidance law combined with proportional navigation are also given. Simulation programs are realized in FORTRAN and MATLAB.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. RAST '03. Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. has designed, built and launched the world's first constellation to provide daily global Earth observation coverage at moderate resolution in three spectral bands. This international initiative will provide daily images for global disaster monitoring, as well as supporting each partner nation's indigenous remote sensing requirements. The DMC programme establishes a novel model for international collaboration, and demonstrates how small satellite missions can be employed for a wide range of applications. This paper shows the first in-orbit mission results from DMC satellites including examples of unique EO data products comprising up to 600/spl times/600 km images gathered at 32-metres GSD in 3 spectral bands.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. Watersheds are gaining critical roles for sustainable development programs all over the world. In this respect, it will be useful to look at the entire watershed boundaries of Turkey. The list taken from State Hydrolics Works of Turkey (DSI), contains 26 watersheds. In this communication we review the very basic information about Turkish Watersheds and discuss some criteria about their classification based on EU Land-Water-MED Program.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. This miniaturization, however, presents even bigger challenges to the spacecraft developers. First, none of these programs have the resources to reinvent the wheel again for their projects. Second, the requirements in communication, operations and software development are not only contained in the transition from bigger satellites to smaller, but sometimes even complicated by this miniaturization.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. The results of the object-oriented classification technique, based on the commercial eCognition software, and the active contour technique, are both obtained on 2 ENVISAT ASAR images; one recorded during a flood period in Flanders on 2 January 2003 and one during a non-flooded region on 26 June of the same year. In both techniques the net flooded result is based on the subtraction of the existing water bodies (i.e. lakes, rivers, canals, ...) obtained from the non-flooded reference image, from the image recorded during the flooded period.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003. The working fluids under investigation passing through the circular channel were air and water. Two phase flow patterns obtained from the computed results have been compared to those of the ones reported in the literature and a reasonable agreement has been obtained. Also the frictional pressure drop values predicted during the computations were within the range of the measured ones. After the validation of the computational procedure, keeping the dimensionless numbers relevant to the small hydraulic diameters constant, the size of the channel has been changed to understand the transition to the flow regime in which the \"conventional\" governing equations fail.","PeriodicalId":272869,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Recent Advances in Space Technologies, 2003.
