Analysis showed that on some days, very high noise levels were experienced, thereby causing errors in communication between the two converter stations. It was postulated that spark gaps, used together with the shield wire insulators, could be the cause of this extraneous noise. Laboratory work was undertaken in order to determine what the noise signatures from various sparkover events on the shield wire of a long HVDC line would look like in the frequency spectrum. Tests were conducted under AC and DC voltage stresses. The radiated noise levels due to the sparkovers were measured using an inefficient loop antenna and a selective voltmeter. Conventionally, linear control techniques are used to design the external controller for a SCRC around a specific operating point where the nonlinear system equations are linearized. However, at other operating points its performance degrades. The indirect adaptive neuro-control scheme offers an attractive approach to overcome this SCRC control problem. As an essential part of this control scheme, an adaptive neuro-identifier has to be firstly designed in order to provide an accurate dynamic plant model for the design of the external neuro-controller. In this paper, an adaptive neuro-identifier using a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is proposed for on-line identification of an SCRC connected to a multi-machine power system. An introduction to the Nordic regional electricity market, its development, structure, and governance will be presented. The development of generation reserves will also be explained and how the system operators coordinate their efforts to maintain a reliable power supply in a power system with diminishing gap between installed generation capacity and peak load. The paper will also highlight how regional cooperation can maintain the security of supply by optimizing use of existing infrastructure and by developing new coordinated protection schemes that allows the system operators to increase transmission limits with small investment costs. This often takes the form of increasing generation capacity in order to meet forecasted demand. With the current envisaged electrical energy shortfall in the Southern African Region, by 2007, DSM presents itself as an immediate strategy to alleviate this potential situation. There are a number of opportunities for DSM initiatives in the region, which if fully exploited, will create useful virtual generation capacities in a number of countries that can enable minimization of the forecasted shortfall, and also contribute positively to reduction in global warming effects. In order to accommodate the ever-growing environmental concerns,, there is a growing drive in the power sector to move away from the vertical approach to power systems planning and economics and move towards integrated resource planning approaches. In this endeavor, the objective is to match demand for electrical energy services in a way that minimizes the overall social costs. The power system planner needs to examine the full portfolio of available investment options on both sides of the customer meter. Demand side management (DSM) options present themselves as noble options in the planning of future power systems. This paper highlights the opportunities for DSM as an option in modern energy resource planning approaches. The paper will present the potential energy savings that could be realized from DSM initiatives as obtained in previous studies in Zimbabwe. It will also highlight the initiatives currently being taken to incorporate DSM in the whole planning process, the problems being encountered and recommendations on the way forward. In the early 1960's, only a few participants took part in the market that was typically governmental to governmental bilateral agreements. As the interconnections expanded, more participants entered the market. The main drawbacks at that time were transmission tariffs and the pricing of electricity. It was difficult to get third party access and this prevented meaningful trading from taking place between countries. From 1995, the north-south interconnector was commissioned and this paved the way for increased energy trading between the predominantly northern hydro networks and the southern thermal systems. In 2001, the SAPP started the short-term energy market (STEM). The STEM market was viewed as a first step towards the development of a regional competitive electricity market. In the STEM energy is traded a day-ahead. The STEM is a firm energy market though bilateral contracts takes precedence over STEM contracts on the transmission lines. From January 2004., the SAPP embarked on the development of a competitive electricity market. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the SAPP competitive electricity market and the challenges the SAPP is facing in migrating from a cooperative pool into a competitive pool. Therefore, considering the increase in HVDC transmission line lengths projected for the future HVDC schemes, it is of vital importance that some type of solution be established to address the shortcomings of these existing schemes. This paper firstly discusses the shortcomings faced by the existing protection systems and then attempts to develop a protection system that is not plagued by the same shortcomings, to ensure that the proposed protection system will in fact be able to provide the required level of protection for HVDC systems with extremely long transmission lines.
