Fierro-Chavez","doi":"10.1109/CEIDP.1999.807905","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CEIDP.1999.807905","url":null,"abstract":"Ceramic insulators installed in a 400 kV line located in a semidesertic area in Monterrey, Mexico have registered flashover caused during critical pollution (high amount of low solubility material) and wetting conditions (dense fog). In previous studies, the contaminant deposited on these insulators was chemically and electrically reproduced in the laboratory and the wetting conditions needed to cause the flashover at nominal voltage were also determined. To get more information, five different profiles of glass and porcelain insulators and several on-line leakage current monitors were installed in this line to determine the pollution accumulation process. Pollution tests were carried out in laboratory using the same insulator profiles in order to determine the leakage current patterns during critical conditions. The obtained values are being used to compare the performance of the insulators installed in the field with the purpose of providing preventive maintenance indicators. The maximum leakage current levels have been defined for the different profiles and a tighten relation between ESDD and leakage current has been obtained. Local defects generate characteristic sequences of partial discharges that also contain information about the critical regions in which the partial discharges occur. This information can be drawn efficiently from the sequence of the partial discharge events and especially the analysis of the sequence of the changes of the applied external voltage that are necessary to trigger the next discharge event. By means of the Pulse-Sequence-Analysis (PSA) more meaningful results can be drawn than from the commonly used phase-correlated collection and evaluation of partial discharge data. With regard to the total number of registered and evaluated discharge events, data collected from various defects in high voltage equipment show that the analysis of short homogeneous sequences is more meaningful than the analysis of the sequence of e.g. 5000 partial discharge events as a whole.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Massines","doi":"10.1109/CEIDP.1999.807844","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CEIDP.1999.807844","url":null,"abstract":"There exists, at atmospheric pressure, three different dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) resulting from three different breakdown mechanisms: (i) glow DBD (GD), which results from Townsend breakdown (ii) filamentary discharge (FD) due to streamer breakdown and (iii) homogeneous discharge (HD) formed by streamer overlapping. The transition between these breakdown mechanisms in helium has been studied. The analysis is based on electrical characteristics, short exposure time photographs and emission spectroscopy of the discharge. The last technique, used during and after the discharge, permits to separate the role of electrons from that of long life time excited species thanks to the discharge's pulsating nature. The study has pointed out the importance of seed electrons present in the gas at the moment of breakdown. Their density depends on the electric field distribution in the gap and the density of metastables. These changes are brought about by field produced by the space charge. influence of the void geometry upon the polarization component of the induced charge is examined for a heterogeneous bulk dielectric system. It is demonstrated that the relative magnitude of this component may either increase or decrease, depending on the ratio of the dielectric permittivities and within which dielectric the void is located. Tiny gas bubbles (10-50 /spl mu/m), as inclusions for visualizations, are used. Special investigations show that the error caused by bubbles is not more than 5%. The conductivity of liquid is invariant. The high limit of the velocity range reached 2-5 m/s. A special program for processing video records of EHD flows was elaborated. This program allow construction of velocity fields in a two-dimensional plot. A magnetic pulse compressor provided voltage and current pulses with a repetition rate of up to 500 pulses per second (pps). A cylindrical configuration with ceramic and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on the outer electrode and without solid dielectric were used. High production yields were obtained of ozone of about 122, 60 and 57 g/kWh by the ceramic, PVC and without dielectric layers, respectively for 15.7-cm length reactor. The length of the cylindrical reactors was varied from 15.7 cm to 1 m. The flow rate of the gas was varied from 1.5 to 3.0 1/min. The dependence of the concentration and the production yield of ozone on different pulse voltages (17 to 63 kV) and varying pulse repetition rate (25 to 400 pps) with and without solid dielectric layer is reported. The set-up consists of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a charge coupled device (CCD) camera to simultaneously capture the EL when high voltage is applied to the polymer. The spectra, resolved by interference filters, and the phase relationship of EL with respect to the applied voltage are determined by the PMT. For spatial resolution an area around the stress point is magnified and imaged onto the CCD. The brightness of each pixel of the CCD signifies where and how far from the tip EL is emitted. The time-dependent charge distribution in an EVA film was monitored by the pulsed-electroacoustic method when a pulse voltage was superposed on a DC bias voltage. A positive charge packet injected from the anode was observed soon after the pulse application, and traveled towards the cathode. It was suggested from the movement of the charge packet, that the mobility of the positive carrier at 0.1-0.6 MV/cm was in the order of 10/sup -9/ cm/sup 2//Vs at room temperature. For small data sets the bias and scatter can be very significant. It is found that ML and weighted LR give similar results. LR requires to select a plotting position. The effect of the plotting position is shown. The evolution, in terms of time, of the potential distribution is measured inside the impregnated pressboard sample at the application of an electric field for different temperature gradients. Four temperature gradients have been tested and three different electric fields. The space charge evolution is measured during around two hours after each temperature gradient application for a given electric field.
