This phenomenon is referred to as fatigue and is generally ascribed either to space charge effects or to the pinning of domain walls at defects. In recent times several techniques have been developed which allow the study of polarization profiles in thin, insulating films. In the present work, the polarization profiles in fatigued ferroelectric polymers were measured using the laser intensity modulation method (LIMM). The polymers studied were polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymers with trifluoroethylene (TrFE). The polymers were fatigued by reversing the polarisation many times using a cyclic field with an amplitude above the coercive field. For some of the polymers, this leads to a decrease in the magnitude of the reversed polarization, while for others, the magnitude remained reasonably constant. It was found that those polymers which showed most fatigue in their hysteresis loops had a more symmetrical distribution of polarization after fatiguing. The lack of fatigue and asymmetrical polarization profiles seem to be associated with materials which contain the non-polar /spl alpha/ crystal form.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The nondimensional parameters control flow electrification and electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow were derived from the mass conservation, momentum conservation, energy conservation, charged particle transport and Poisson's equations for liquid flow. For single-phase flow of liquid, in addition to conventional dimensionless numbers for flow heat and mass transfers (Re, Ra, Pr, Sc), and EHD flow (E/sub t0/, E/sub t/spl epsi//), new variables the Debye number D/sub b/, ion drift number F/sub E/ are defined. The results show that the EHD number based on the space charge density /spl Gt/ Re/sup 2/ is required for the inducing EHD secondary flow in the downstream of pipe for single phase flow. The results also show that the change in relaxation time should be used only when F/sub E//spl Gt/1 and F/sub E//spl Gt/ReSc/sub i/ conditions. We propose that the Debye number D/sub b/, Re and Sc/sub i/ replace the change relaxation time for the transient change relaxation estimation in fluid flow. The effect of flow on the electrification is also expressed in terms of diffusion Reynolds number of ions.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. To summarize the sensitivity of different GIS designs to moving particles, an evaluation of many calculated trajectories is presented. Some of the calculated results are verified by optically recorded trajectories of a particle moving in the laboratory GIS setup. As an evident result, which is also supported by acoustic measurements, the particle movement is minor in three-phase enclosures. Characteristic flight patterns demonstrate if the particle, depending on its size, contacts the high-voltage electrode or not. In the first case, a breakdown of the isolating distance gets predictable. The experimental setup, the test-vessel, and the modular components are described. The comparison is limited to rated voltages up to U=170 kV (AC, 50 Hz).","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. They promise to have a lower environmental impact than a system insulated with pure SF/sub 6/ for the same rating. The main issue concerning the practical use of such mixtures is their breakdown behavior in the presence of defects (roughness, particles). In this paper, experimental data for breakdown of 10% SF/sub 6//90% N/sub 2/ mixture and pure SF/sub 6/ in the presence of oblong particles are presented and interpreted in the frame of discharge mechanisms in electronegative gases. To estimate the effect of roughness, streamer inception calculations for single protrusions are given for both gases. For oblong particle contamination the 10% SF/sub 6//90% N/sub 2/ mixture is found to reach about 65% of the insulation capability of pure SF/sub 6/ as is the case for defect-free electrodes. For typical roughness of 50 /spl mu/m at pressures above 3 bar, the performance of 10% SF/sub 6//90% N/sub 2/ mixture is about 90% of pure SF/sub 6/.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Such systems consist of composite inclusions multicomponent materials embedded in a matrix of a distinct material. The effects of volume fraction, permittivity, shape and thickness of the various constituents on the complex permittivity, in the quasistatic approximation, of the heterostructures are reported. We use an ab initio numerical technique for the evaluation of the dielectric characteristics of composite composites, arranged in a regular simple cubic lattice, which is based on the field calculation package PHI3D and the resolution of boundary integral equations. This method is exact in the sense that all internal electric multipole interactions are taken into account. Typical results presented for spheres and ellipsoids indicate that any approach based solely on the dipole approximation must fail to predict the effective permittivity of dielectric heterostructures.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Higher breakdown voltages have been observed with LDPE film as a barrier than those with oil alone for frequencies below power frequency. The breakdown voltage decreased with increased frequency with film, whereas, with oil alone, no such frequency effect was observed for the range of frequency considered (2 Hz to 1 kHz). At low frequencies the breakdown always occurred on positive polarity, although pd patterns indicate the occurrence of a large number of discharges in the negative half cycle.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
