Findings indicate that preservice teachers use of technology was strongly influenced by the technology tools that they saw modeled by their instructors. As preservice teachers participated in the course and in each other's lessons, they became more comfortable with the use of digital tools, Zoom features, methods for online participation, online assessment methods, and literacy instruction resources. Focus group participants reported that their ease with using technology to facilitate the demonstration lessons increased throughout the semester as they participated in peers' demonstration lessons.","PeriodicalId":266919,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Empowering Early Childhood Educators With Technology","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130792930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These skills, named CT Core Ideas in the project team's framework, support children's abilities to tackle problems or goals using systematic, computational strategies. The authors describe a theoretical model that outlines the ways in which CT aligns with preschool math instruction, and how children can apply their CT skills through digital gameplay. This chapter also shares lessons learned from classroom research with teachers and children and describes several game prototypes that children played to practice their CT skills. At the end of the chapter, they provide recommendations for how educators can support young children's CT by integrating hands-on gameplay into classroom instruction.","PeriodicalId":266919,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Empowering Early Childhood Educators With Technology","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127851658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learning about the local community, thinking about the local landscape, and learning about cultural traditions and values can be the basis for learning about our place. Using an our place approach, one that is place-based, culturally responsive, and with STEAM integration, will help children connect with their local place. Using our place as a curriculum starter and connecter can be rewarding and meaningful to the children, the families, and the community. Building authentic learning opportunities based on strengths in the community, cultural values, and content integration will have a positive impact on all those involved.","PeriodicalId":266919,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Empowering Early Childhood Educators With Technology","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129152537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To better understand parent engagement during assigned reading homework, an exploratory study was conducted with the families of kindergarteners. Parents were asked about their involvement when working on assigned reading homework. The results of the survey indicated that many parents are willing to take time to support their child as they complete homework assignments and that they already read at home, whether it is assigned or not. These findings, along with recent literature, are useful for developing strategies to better engage families during online learning.","PeriodicalId":266919,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Empowering Early Childhood Educators With Technology","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131496951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While in-person instruction is best for young children, COVID-19 has shown educators that distance education is a viable option and might be an unavoidable reality. In this chapter, educators are identified as Teacher Nomads who need to be ready to shift instructional modes and use remote learning technology tools as important components of their brick-and-mortar classrooms. The authors develop the concept of the Early Childhood Flip. Key components of this developmentally appropriate remote instruction include visuals that mimic the classroom, a balance of on-screen and off-screen time, activities that build relationships and collaboration, edutainment and game-like elements, and engaging introductions by the teacher to motivate students in technology-driven independent remote work. The authors also introduce an approach to planning called Translatable Instruction, a design process that guides educators to mindfully balance in-person and virtual instructional tools to meet learning outcomes.","PeriodicalId":266919,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Empowering Early Childhood Educators With Technology","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129747282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teachers must be prepared to adopt and purposefully use technology, often with little training or instruction in the field. This chapter describes the integration and use of technology as an embedded tool to leverage in the preparation of pre-service teachers using three distinct strategies within a program in the northeastern United States. The authors will share their experiences in the execution of these strategies that target the development of flexible, intentional, and reflective teachers who can enter the workforce ready to use technology both for their own professional development and as a tool for student learning.","PeriodicalId":266919,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Empowering Early Childhood Educators With Technology","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132134487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
