In contrast, the important design principles for effective humanitarian logistics systems remains poorly understood. Current research focuses largely on applying business models to humanitarian logistics, however, there remains a fundamental mismatch between business logistics models, and humanitarian logistics ways of operating. Specifically, business logistics systems are utility focused; designed to prioritize cost minimization and profit maximization, to sustain a long-term market demand for their service and to limit the opportunity for uncertainty within their supply chain. Alternatively, humanitarians and their logistics systems aim to prioritize a shared moral code over economic outcomes, reduce beneficiary dependence upon their service, and specifically operate in a contingent environment characterized by high uncertainty and context flux. Thus, we argue that business logistics models and tools designed for precision outcomes and control cannot merely be re-engineered for a humanitarian context that calls for approximation and parallel option flexibility. Instead of adapting economic-based logistics systems designed for maximizing business effectiveness, we believe academics could better contribute to the science of humanitarian logistics by pursuing new designs supporting the goals and constraints driven by humanitarian values.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123455730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increasingly, globalization has given rise to unhealthy diets which is one major cause for non communicable disease. Lack of adequate information and nutritional knowledge has largely lead to unhealthy diets in populations. Most nutrition education theories and models lack the adequate matching to individual characteristics to effective behavioral change. An innovative nutrition education model comprising of multiple nutrition education strategies was designed and developed, as an initiative to induce behavioral change towards healthy diets, to reduce risks of non communicable diseases. The model takes an incremental approach towards nutrition education through the use of different learning techniques and perceptive influences to change dietary behavior of diverse populations.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125284491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system can be implemented in national highways where wind can be collected due to the high speed motion of vehicles and at the same time the solar energy from the ambient will also be collected. Finally both energies will be acquired simultaneously for charging the batteries and is utilized for satisfying the electrical demands of domestic and rural areas. For the purpose of maximum uninterrupted power supply in industries and factories, a DC generator and power supply line are also connected to the system. But these two systems work in a priority order only when the demand is not met by the Wind-Solar system. The main advantage of this system is, it can be implemented in both standalone and grid connected modes.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127605805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Along with the demand, supply of low quality SHS components is increasing resulting in decreased SHS efficiency and adverse effect on the country's economy. In this case standard testing methods for the SHS components can help us verify the standard of the components in markets thus increase reliability and efficiency of the whole system. This paper discusses about the standard qualification testing procedure, its necessity and effect in Bangladesh prospective. Here we present the testing procedures used to determine whether the SHS components meet IDCOL standards and our findings on the components in concern. Sample testing data from our lab is also integrated in the paper.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133830887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For those who cannot afford a computer, cybercafés can serve as a simple payment channel and as a platform to work. However, there are questions about whether workers are interested in working in cybercafés, whether cybercafé owners are willing to host such a set up, and whether workers are skilled enough to earn an acceptable pay rate? We designed experiments in internet/cyber cafes in India and Kenya to investigate these issues. We also investigated whether computers make workers more productive than mobile platforms? In surveys, we found that 99% of the users wanted to continue with the experiment in cybercafé, while 8 of 9 cybercafé owners showed interest to host this experiment. User typing speed was adequate to earn a pay rate comparable to their existing wages, and the fastest workers were approximately twice as productive using a computer platform.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134331358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of this huge amount of information is still limited due to the lack of reliable interpretation models that allow to produce value added map of easy use in actual cases. The development of physical models along with the identification of the user needs allow to fill this gap. This paper is focused on the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar data, that provide a lot of information useful in many applications related to natural (volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, and so on) and human-driven (oil spills, Earth, air and sea pollution, and so on) disasters. The actual SAR technology allows a low cost use with significant performances in terms of spatial resolution, temporal revisit time and coverage. The proposed approach is supported by examples that show the potentialities of the use of SAR data for crisis prevention, management and response.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133479112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar energy is being harnessed and converted to electrical energy via solar panels and then stored in batteries which can then be used to power households and agricultural activities. The introduction of a prototype design for a solar battery charging station can aid the process of solar electrification in rural areas and take the load off the grid in urban regions. The batteries charged by these stations can also be used to power modified rickshaws that are torque sensor based and electrically assisted. These sensor based hybrid rickshaws have a longer battery life that requires infrequent charging, are faster than conventional rickshaws and need less human effort to be plied on the streets.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"415 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133997097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The described metering and switching hardware is more power efficient than off-the-shelf systems with equivalent capability while being able to measure much smaller loads accurately. The metering system we've developed is suitable for monitoring up to a collection of 20 circuits each drawing power as low as 1W up to 500W as is often found in a rural microgrid setting. Created with modularity in mind, the software and hardware design can easily be modified to be used as part of a home-solar power system, an AC micro-grid, or as a meter for each load in a room. The designs and source code will be made publicly available in August of 2012.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130994867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This welfare activity particularly focuses on Children in Distress (CID) and their rehabilitation through various initiatives and collaborations with partners/NGOs across India. The main objectives of the System are to help Children in distress and to have complete transparency of the activities by various stakeholders across the programme. This is inline with the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) which is an integral part of the Ministry of Women and Children Development (Government of India). The innovation was to setup a free national helpline (Tel no. 1098) which would assist in initiating and recording Child Vulnerability Incidents across India. The System is designed to address Child Vulnerability Issues like Abuse & Violence, child Trafficking, Child Labor, child in Conflict with Law, Child Marriage, Child Sexual Abuse, Child without Parental Care, Street Children (without Shelter), , Disabilities, Health issues, Drug Abuse, Gender bias (Girl Child), HIV-AIDS, Missing Children. The System also assists to record collaboration from Government, Public and Private Sectors for addressing this challenge collectively. Comprehensive solution was developed to assist programme in aligning priorities of initiatives and track the progress made in each of the child Intervention case. This resulted in bringing about visibility and accountability with traceability for the initiative with trend analysis. The system is presently operational in 170 cities in 30 States and Union Territories in India and has assisted to address more than 10 million calls so far.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115042624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence, utilities service providers are required to submit proposals to create or upgrade power infrastructures. These proposed projects could have potential impacts on the environment and thus are required to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Although the importance of engaging public citizens in the EIA process has long been recognized, public participation in the EIA process is often regarded as ineffective due to material, technical, and procedural complexity as well as the nature of environmental information. This paper presents a spatially intelligent framework to improve the effectiveness of public participation in the EIA process. The framework proposes five components that integrate GIS, data mining and mobile technology; a Web-based information system is also developed as a proof-of-concept. Survey questionnaires and user scenarios were designed to collect initial feedback and evaluate the effectiveness of public participation and system usability. Preliminary results have suggested that the system strengthens users' understanding in the project information and the EIA process, improves the usability compared to the existing EIA website, and enhances their willingness to participate in the EIA process.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115149977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
