In many cases, electrification through traditional centralized grid expansion is not a viable option. As such, community-scale micro grids have been developed in numerous locations. These systems often rely on renewable resources as their power source. This paper explores the opportunities and challenges of micro (subkilowatt) wind energy conversion systems for rural electrification in under-resourced communities. A brief overview of micro wind energy conversion system technology is provided. Recent field experiences are documented.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125317979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new type of solar cooker is developed with a hot plate. The hot plate offers comfortable access to the food under preparation. The hot plate opens up the opportunity to generate small amounts of electricity with the help of a thermo electric generator (TEG). The cooker uses a parabolic trough mirror, a Sidney Tube and a heat pipe to transport energy to the hot plate. The energy losses in the conversion steps and so the effectiveness of the whole system are verified with experiments. A comparison of the Tube Solar Cooker with a conventional parabolic solar cookers shows that the new solar cooker outperforms the state of the art on several aspects. The hot plate provides easy access to the pot without the risk of exposure to intense radiation. The high temperature of the hot plate increases the number of cooking techniques compared to conventional solar cookers. The avoidance of heat loss at elevated temperatures of the system is an important issue for further improvement.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122011726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mission of this project is to develop a sustainable health center design model that can help address the needs of the people in its surrounding communities. Background research and interviews were conducted to develop a foundation of knowledge on the culture, region, common injuries, and such in order to determine the customer needs. Seven main subsystems of a clinic were investigated: green building design, energy, building materials, water treatment, waste management, rainwater collection system, and communication. These subsystems were researched and preliminary considerations and designs were developed. An adaptable software model was created that allows users to input specific criteria after which the model yields output recommendations for the clinic design. A proposed architectural rendering of a clinic was also developed to portray a possible rendering of the clinic. The use of this model in Sub-Saharan Africa may give NGOs a tool to interactively design more sustainable health clinic infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132728118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such factors vary from poor database design, lack of standards for recording database fields to typing mistakes (lexicographical errors, character transpositions). In such a case it is important to identify duplicates and merge them into a single entity. In doing so, one problem that arises is, the way in which string attributes are to be compared. Even though there are different methods in the literature that address the issue of approximate string matching, they all fall short in terms of accuracy when encountered with words from the Sinhalese language written in English. In this paper, it is intended to propose the development of an improved phonetic matching algorithm which improved the accuracy of approximate string matching remarkably. This modified algorithm outperforms the phonetic matching algorithms available in the literature, when applied on datasets containing Sinhalese names and words written in English. In addition, it demonstrates a computational time comparable with phonetic matching algorithms available in the literature. Thus, the modified algorithm which we name “SPARCL” outperforms other phonetic matching algorithms and is illustrated with a real life application.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133330172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CSR has achieved great traction in its endeavor to do social good for the society at large. Though the main purpose of existence of business is to maximize shareholder's wealth, CSR provides an opportunity for enterprises to leverage upon the existing technological advances in the creation of a better society. However, the main concern is that most of the time, technological interventions do not encompass a holistic approach and hence, do not create desired impact in the society. In this paper, author proposes a systems thinking approach, which is a holistic approach to problem solving, to effectively leverage technology for various stakeholders of CSR and how such an approach can create better, holistic impact in the society. Author discusses few Systems Thinking frameworks and models which help in the better usage of technology and CSR. With the help of three case studies, author demonstrates the role of technology in CSR initiatives. Case studies will illustrate the `giant leap' taken by technology in meeting the needs of the population from the bottom of the pyramid (BOP).","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129475988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This Innovation Space is being designed for resource-constrained contexts like East Africa where unemployment rates exceed 40% and systemic challenges impact people's lives and livelihoods. This space provides innovators a vehicle to rapidly and effectively take ideas from a concept to a product. A key feature of this space is access to various kinds of connectors and structural elements that collectively form a full-scale \"Lego set\" for innovators. Universal connectors made of mild steel form the vertices of structures with the edges made of locallyavailable materials like mild steel, plastic or bamboo. Special connectors have been designed to add wheels to structures or make bicycle-powered devices. This paper presents the conceptual framework for this connectorcentric prototyping environment and showcases some of the products that can be prototyped there. The overarching objective of this venture is to develop a Lego-inspired set of connectors that forms the nucleus of innovation spaces to be implemented in secondary and vocational schools in East Africa. We envision that these Innovation Spaces will nurture small enterprises based on the connectors themselves as well as market-driven products designed with them. More importantly, it will provide the next generation of students a venue to develop their creativity, design skills and an entrepreneurial mindset.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132311794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While traditional designs comprise enamel copper wire, the novel coil uses aluminum foil for it being low cost and readily available. Commercial home video tape is employed to provide insulation between turns, promoting the recycling of video cassettes and enhancing the magnetic properties of the generator. Three study cases were analyzed and tested; their manufacturing process and performance were recorded. The test results are presented in terms of comparison with the original copper design, indicating that aluminum foil coils have the potential to enhance the performance of the generator. The design and manufacturing approaches are unveiled so that a fabricator may redesign and build similar coils based on the materials available.","PeriodicalId":265555,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116746468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
