MPEG-II is widely used for compression of digital video in order to reduce the network bandwidth and storage requirements [4]. Digital video, when used in networked multimedia applications, suffers from data losses/errors. This is a serious problem in the case of wireless networks [7]. There are several ways to recover from these losses or errors. Recovery mechanisms based on re-transmission of the data may not be suitable in many cases because of the real-time nature of the applications and the absence of reverse channel for feedback. Real-time communication of digital video, as in the case of video conferencing, benefit from forward error correction/recovery techniques. Forward error correction (FEC) codes and frequent synchronizing codewords have been proposed in [5, 61. These techniques require low complexity hardware, however they add redundancy thereby lowering the coding efficiency. FEC can potentially add more errors to a bit stream once the correcting capability of the code has been exceeded. An error-resilient entropy coding (EREC) technique has been suggested in [2, 3, 11. EREC achieves bit stream resynchronization. [2, 3, l] also propose a hierarchical pyramid predictor in place of the standard differentially coded DPCM. These proposals consider channels subject to burst errors and packet errors and aim at providing an environment where performance degrades gracefully with increasing channel noise. Several simple error resilient approaches are suggested in [7]. These approaches include error concealment, temporal localization by sending extra I-frames, and spatial localization by providing early resynchronization of the elements in the bit stream that are coded differentially between MPEG-II macro-blocks.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129855022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using WEBTOUR, web document designers can easily augment the contents of standard web documents by recording such annotations on each document. Upon playback, all media components that comprise the annotation are synchronized and overlaid on top of the web documents. We also present several application scenarios where WEBTOUR is both useful and cost effective.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121843444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multimedia data consist of image, audio, and text, and various research on analysis of each individual medium has been made. Especially, image processing has been the main issue when handling multimedia for a long time. But recently, it has started to be considered that image processing alone is insufficient for thorough understanding of multimedia data. In the 1990’s, integrated processing that supplements the incompleteness of information from each medium has become a trend. Following this trend, we are trying to integrate TV programs with related documents, taking advantage of the relative easiness of extracting semantic structures from text media. Among various programs, cultural programs are considered as appropriate sources since (1)supplementary documents are available and (2)the video contains a lot of implicit information that integration could be helpful to thorough understanding of supplementary texts. Many attempts have been made to index video by means of multimedia integration. But sufficient accuracy for practical use is not necessarily achieved since their subjects are too general to achieve accuracy from elemental technoiogies by making use of domain specific characteristics. In our method, we examine and construct a practical system using relatively simple elemental technologies by reflecting the result of one medium’s process to another. We will focus on cooking programs, so that we can take advantage of domain specific constraints and knowledge. Through the examination in this specific domain, and the usage of a supplementary document and its analysis, we aim for proposing a novel advanced multimedia integration method. Using the result of this method, we also propose an integrative restructuring method of the multimedia data provided both from the video and the supplementary document.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117296336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially for dramas, once all face sequences are extracted and identified, access to video fragments by means of actor/actress information becomes available. Automated extraction and identification of face sequences may enable many multimedia applications including video indexing, drama video authoring, etc. This paper describes an semi-automated actor/actress annotation system for drama videos, using a newly developed method for robust face sequence extraction and matching, and face classification. Figure 1 shows the process of the system. The system is first given the video of an episode (e.g., the first episode) of a drama series. After the system extracts face sequences from the video and has part of faces manually annotated by a person, it provides annotations to all faces of the episode. Our approach defines semantics at two levels: (1) primitive semantics at the patch level, extracted automatically from pixel characteristics of patches with supervised learning; and (2) scene semantics at the image level, recognized from the association of primitive semantics of the patches in a self-organizing manner. Images are classified and retrieved according to the similarity in scene semantics. Our experiments so far have yielded highly accurate scene classification results and very promising retrieval performance on a set of diverse natural scene images.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124868833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the fundamental limitation of the singleserver architecture, it suffers from the problems of scalability and server fault tolerance. To effectively address these two issues, designing parallel video servers become inevitable [l]. Because of the nature of timely video data, end-to-end resources in parallel video servers, such as disks, CPU and network, have to be reserved and properly scheduled in order to guarantee continuous hiccup-free display in clients. Many research works have already demonstrated the impediment of network bandwidth in the endto-end path. In this research, sufficient disk bandwidth without causing the bottleneck is assumed and the contribution mainly focuses on exploring scheduling algorithms to optimize the utilization rate of network bandwidth in shared and switching interconnection network environments for Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and Variable Bit Rate (VBR) video streams,","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129883570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
