As key technologies, face sequence extraction and matching methods applicable to actual drama videos are presented. The methods are then applied to realize a semi-automated actor/actress annotation system. After the system is trained using an episode of a drama series by given several tens of manual annotations to face sequences, it can automatically annotate face sequences not only of the trained episode, but of the other episodes of the drama series. Experimental results show that the system achieves around 70% accuracy in face sequence annotation using 40 manual annotations as the training set.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124460259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the developing of our video retrieval system, we propose a new video similarity model. In contrast to existing algorithms, it proposes many influencing factors, such as order factor, speed factor, disturbance factor, etc, based on the subjective visual judgement of human. So this algorithm embodies the degree of similarity completely and systematically. On the other hand, it has resolution adaptation because it can be applied to every level of video structure. In the retrieval system, it can be used to process video query by example clip. This paper introduces it in detail and presents experiment results at the end of the paper.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115423583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many parameter estimation techniques have been proposed for relevance feedback. However, most of them are either based on ad-hoc heuristics or only partial solutions. In this paper, we introduce the first technique that not only has a solid theoretical framework but also takes into account the multi-level image content model. This technique formulates a vigorous optimization problem. By using Lagrange multipliers, we have derived the explicit optimal solutions for both the query vectors and the weights associated with the two-level image model. Experimental results on realworld image collections have shown the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123060568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the sequel, we will only dwell on one of the most important visual features, namely the shape feature. The shape feature is essential as it corresponds to region of interest in images. Consequently, the shape representation is fundamental. This description must be compact and accurate, and it must own properties of invariance to several geometric transformations. After presenting several shape representations, we present the two complementary methods implemented in our prototype. The first one is an existing well-known approach, Freeman code, and the second one is an adaptation of a famous approach, Fourier theory. Simulations allow us to compare our results with results obtained under MATLAB, a powerful mathematical software, and to validate the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128911192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MAVIS 2 (Multimedia Architecture for Video, Image and Sound, the second system by that name) aims to provide integrated content and concept based navigation, retrieval and browsing within and between multimedia objects in several media types[l]. It is designed to allow a user to make selections from media that they are viewing and form a query. The scope of the query governs the range of searching and the type of results that will be returned. The scope can include retrieval, in which case similar objects are returned to the user and it can include navigation, in which case links with similar source anchors to the selection are returned.","PeriodicalId":265329,"journal":{"name":"MULTIMEDIA '99","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121298858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
