The system uses an augmented reality (AR) tablet application to visualize information about internal processes, sensor states, settings and hidden parts of a production system directly in the field of view of a user. The available information can be accessed via four different methods which combine elements of step-by-step tutorials and open exploration. Our prototype aims to support users to better understand automated systems. While such systems will become more complex in future, we believe that augmented reality is a key concept that could help humans to better understand and experience automated systems and its consequences in general.","PeriodicalId":264425,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129733888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While research and development in this area have been primarily driven by industry, AR could also have a huge impact on those who need assistance the most: cognitively impaired people of all ages. In recent years some primary research on applying AR for action assistance and learning in the context of this target group has been conducted. However, the research field is sparsely covered and contributions are hard to categorize. An overview of the current state of research is missing. We contribute to filling this gap by providing a systematic literature review covering 52 publications. We describe the often rather technical publications on an abstract level and quantitatively assess their usage purpose, the targeted age group and the type of AR device used. Additionally, we provide insights on the current challenges and chances of AR learning and action assistance for people with cognitive impairments. We discuss trends in the research field, including potential future work for researchers to focus on.","PeriodicalId":264425,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127413959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This framework takes advantage of 3D motion tracking and virtual reality devices, to present a personalized and adaptive gaming system, which allows patients to perform exercises as suggested by their physiotherapy experts, while being fully engaged in a gamified 3D scene. Virtual characters are dynamically displayed within scenes to guide users through the different set of required gestures. Virtual assistants have the ability to learn and adapt to the best level of difficulty in real-time based on the user performance. An intelligent alerting and automatic correction components are embedded in our engine, so that pre-calculated gesture patterns are correlated and matched with patients' gestures. Consequently, the system estimates the perceived difficulty of gestures by the patient, so that automatic adjustments are executed to ensure a highly engaging and adaptive serious game experience. A pilot study has been conducted to prove the usability and effectiveness of our gamified physiotherapy solution.","PeriodicalId":264425,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125957741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Together, the smartphone application and the external device will serve as a wearable that will help the navigation and guidance of blind people. The external device will collect information using an ultrasonic sensor and a GPS module. The device has been developed as an assistance device, complementary to the cane or any other type of tool used by the blind, to be an additional safety instrument during autonomous outdoor blind navigation assisted by a smartphone application. Its main objective is to detect the existence of obstacles in the path of the user and to provide information, through oral instructions, about the distance to which it is located, its size, potential motion and to advise how it could be avoided.","PeriodicalId":264425,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"21 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126128334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accessing charts or understanding data is a main requirement in various professions. Audio-tactile charts can be explored by touch. Producing tactile charts takes a high effort and the design is challenging. Especially, blind and visually impaired people are excluded from chart creation. That is why we investigated several studies and developed a concept for a tool that aims to improve the creation process as well as the quality of audio-tactile charts. We present our concept and describe ideas and properties for user input, input data, graphical user interface, the rendering process as well as the output files in detail. Afterwards, we present our current implementation that includes an accessible graphical user interface which supports well-designed default parameters for chart generation. Most properties are customizable while the GUI supports a live preview of the current chart. In addition, an accessible legend and description will be generated. We support the generation of grouped and stacked bar charts, line charts, and scatterplots in an accessible SVG format. We evaluated the resulting charts, the usability and accessibility of the GUI within two pilot studies with blind and sighted people where we find implications for further investigations.","PeriodicalId":264425,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124339907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
