This module includes a dual input GaAs FET low noise amplifier (LNA) with a switching function, a SAW filter and a GaAs dual-gate FET mixer. Since the dual input LNA works as two independent LNAs and a SPDT switch, a very small size and a low production cost front-end MCM can be obtained. The package size of this MCM is 0.13 cc. With -10 dBm local input power and a supply d.c. current of 4.0 mA and a d.c. voltage of 3 V, a noise figure of 3.2 dB and a conversion gain of 22.5 dB were obtained.","PeriodicalId":264044,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE MTT-S Symposium on Technologies for Wireless Applications Digest","volume":"86 21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126288764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the mid-1990s HBT technology has matured providing components for high volume low cost commercial wireless applications, as well as for high performance defense avionics, ground, and space applications. We discuss the status and future trends of HBT IC technology and production for defense and commercial applications, including advanced technology development, and comparison to MESFET, HEMT, and silicon based bipolar technology. Brief mention is made of power amplifiers and signal synthesizers.","PeriodicalId":264044,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE MTT-S Symposium on Technologies for Wireless Applications Digest","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122369814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phase equalisers instead of linear delay lines are employed in the feedforward reference paths to match the nonlinear delay/phase characteristics of both the main and error amplifiers. Information, its creation, processing, storage and delivery will be the dominant global force for the next several decades. The Information Age is characterized by the convergence of data communications, telecommunications, entertainment, broadcasting, cashless commerce and advertising. The heart of this combination is telecommunications. Wireless communications, specifically wireless personal communications, are poised to enter the mainstream of the Information Age. Wireless communication must provide the quality, reliability and ubiquity demanded by the services and end users. This must be accomplished in an increasingly complex environment of interconnected networks which are growing at a revolutionary pace. Furthermore, network flexibility and interworking will be paramount aspects of completing the global, information infrastructure. All of this will combine to require more sophistication from wireless networks and network providers than ever required before in history. Parallel networks, optimized for typical applications-such as video, wideband data, voice, etc.-will emerge. A wide variety of air interfaces will proliferate. End-user devices will continue to improve in processing power, human-machine interfaces, battery life and form factor. The challenges are significant, the opportunities immense and the benefit to society of a job well done, will be immeasurable.","PeriodicalId":264044,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE MTT-S Symposium on Technologies for Wireless Applications Digest","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131915719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The circuit design was specified for use in PCN transceivers, operating over the 200 MHz to 2.5 GHz RF band, with 45 to 500 MHz IF band. The converter design was based on a Gilbert (1968) cell structure, employing GaAs MESFET differential pairs and active baluns. Optimized characteristics were achieved by simulating the schematic and layout topologies, using the HP-EESOF CAD environment. The converter was sent for fabrication at the GEC-Marconi foundry, UK, as part of the former Eurochip Multi-Project-Wafer (now Europractice MPW). Measured results of the converter confirm its capability of delivering gain and presenting high isolation between ports, as well as adequate compression characteristics, in both transceiver pathways. Such results distinguish this device from commercially available mixers for PCN systems, for its dual operation as up and down converter and for its flexibility of use.","PeriodicalId":264044,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE MTT-S Symposium on Technologies for Wireless Applications Digest","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128255168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multibeam antennas provide increased gain, while still providing coverage over the entire cell. The microstrip patch antenna is a logical choice for this application because in addition to meeting the electrical specifications, the antenna is flat in appearance, and is capable of dual polarisation operation. The patch antenna can also be built with relatively low weight and cost. A 20 dB aperture coupled patch antenna has been demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":264044,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE MTT-S Symposium on Technologies for Wireless Applications Digest","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122698211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
