Nutritional intervention/ supplementation with PUFAs in experimental animal models have exhibited anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, chronic inflammation was assayed by cotton pellet-induced granuloma method to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-granuloma effects of omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acid using experimentally induced inflammatory models in rats. Obtained results indicate that omega-3 oil extract significantly (p<0.05) reduced the granuloma tissue formation (58.36 ± 3.52, 65.40 ± 1.30, 57.78 ± 3.89, 50.93 ± 0.60 and 42.17 ± 0.70 mg) representing 33.78, 25.79, 34.44, 42.21 and 52.15 % inhibition respectively for the proliferative phase when compared to the control. These results showed that omega-3 oil extract studied, possess both anti-inflammatory and anti-granuloma properties.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124607717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of interprofessional collaborative attitudes towards teamwork is known to occur well before graduation. Attitudes of pharmacists towards physicians and other healthcare professionals have influence on quality of future collaboration in patient care decisions. There is evidence to suggest that developing right attitudes during training can enhance collaboration during post-graduation team work in patient care decisions. The objective of this study is to evaluate students’ attitudes towards collaboration with physicians when carrying out pharmaceutical care services. This was a cross sectional survey study among fourth and fifth year pharmacy students. The sixteen item “scale of attitudes towards physician and pharmacist collaboration” [SATP2C] questionnaire was used to explore their attitudes. The four item Likert scale instrument was self-administered and respondents were asked to tick the option that best reflect their attitude (1=strongly agree, 2-agree, 3-disagree, 4-strongly disagree). Analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics (Students t test) and P value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Attitudes of pharmacy students towards physician collaboration was generally high, a result that was not affected by gender and year of study. Pharmacy student’s positive collaborative attitudes with physician holds better promise for integration into clinical teamwork for improved outcomes for patients after qualification. The positive attitude among pharmacy students towards collaboration with physicians should be emphasized during training to adequately prepare them for post qualification teamwork.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123697728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has become popular with both patients and health professionals. However, its clinical effectiveness is still controversial, with some studies supporting it, whereas others contradict its clinical use. Although ES has been used for decades, it has recently been clarified how it produces analgesia or reduces pain. Furthermore, there is likely more than one mechanism of action. This descriptive review describes the fundamental mechanisms and the necessary details of possible pathways and networks that ES modulates. It also covers literature findings concerning ES: basic science, experimental pain; clinical trials; and systematic reviews; to update the reader on the latest developments in its description.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128777245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: Bacillus subtilis known to be a bacitracin producer was isolated from the soil and identified. The isolate was used to produce bacitracin under various culture conditions with peptone water serving as a basal fermentation medium. The resultant crude bacitracin produced was checked for its antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus by using the agar well diffusion method. Culture conditions varied were the addition of glycerol, arabinose, fructose, mannose, sucrose, urea, MgSO4, CaCO3, KCl, sodium citrate, and the adjustment of initial pH at pH 5, 6, 8 and 9. Bacitracin production was done at 37 oC for 4 days in an orbital shaker incubator rotating at 150rpm. Result: The antimicrobial activity against the test organism (Staphylococcus aureus) was determined by the mm of the zone of inhibition, with the best result obtained from the addition of glycerol (14 mm) and the least zone of inhibition was observed from the addition of MgSO4 (3 mm). Also, pH 8 produced the best result (20 mm), while at pH 5, the antimicrobial activity of the crude bacitracin was reduced (14 mm). Conclusion: Bacitracin produced from Bacillus subtilis under various culture conditions has antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus. The highest antimicrobial activities can be gotten by the addition of glycerol and by raising the initial pH of the basal broth to pH 8 while that produced by addition of MgSO4 will have the lowest antimicrobial effect.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"34 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128404255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The jams are stored at room temperature (20±2 ℃) for 60 days, ensuring that the storage is 0., 20., 40. and 60. color, total dry matter, water soluble dry matter, pH, titration acidity, reduced sugar, sucrose, total sugar, HMF. The total dry matter, water soluble dry matter, ash, reduce sugar and HMF were found to be higher compared to the control sample of pomegranate jams to which the extract was added. In addition, at the end of the storage period of all samples, there was a decrease in total dry matter, water soluble dry matter, sucrose and total sugar amounts compared to the beginning. L, a, b, C and H values increased. L, a, b, C and H values of pomegranate jams to which extracts obtained by ultrasonic method were added were found to be higher compared to pomegranate jams to which extracts obtained by classical method were added. HMF amount in pomegranate jams to which extracts obtained by ultrasonic method were added were found to be lower than in the control group and pomegranate jams to which extracts obtained by classical method were added. As a result, it can be said that black mulberry and black rosehip extracts can be used to improve the color of pomegranate jam and other foods.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122670176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This plant is known as a medicinal plant and its pharmacological effects have been developed both traditional and modern. All parts of the Gloriosa superba, especially the tubers and seeds, contain alkaloids namely colchicine and gloriosine. The content of colchicine and colchicides in tubers and other parts of plants is about 0.1 - 0.9% and 0.8% respectively. Colchicine has a strong affinity for tubulin so it is often used in biological studies and plant breeding to induce mutations that produce polyploidy individuals. Colchicine as a mutagen is used to develop the superior properties of some plants. Polyploidi plants have several advantages including larger cells, higher plants, wider leaves, larger fruits, higher production, and plants becoming more resistant to disease. Considering the role of colchicine above, the prospect of Gloriosa superba as a source of biomutagens (natural colchicine) needs to be studied and further developed.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130686182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various studies have shown that HIV infection and malnutrition are intricately linked to each other. In the absence of proper nutrition and treatment, HIV infection can lead to malnutrition which in turn impairs the immune system there by progressing HIV to AIDS, conversely use of ART has been reported to have significant effect on people living with HIV. This study aims at assessing the nutritional interplay between HIV drugs and kidney, liver, and heart indices among subjects undergoing HIV treatment at medical out-patient department of Federal Medical Centers in North Central part of Nigeria. A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted where 677 people living with HIV attending the ART clinic were selected using a systematic random sampling technique. Nutritional status among these people was assessed through anthropometry Body Mass Index (BMI) and were classified accordingly; Underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) and overweight/obesity (BMI > 23 kg/m2). Patients information’s including HIV associated risk factors, opportunistic infections, ART regimen, etc. were collected from the medical record department. Socio-demographic data were collected using structured questionnaire. Blood samples were collected to access kidney, liver and heart indices as well as levels of Vitamin D and trace elements such as Zinc and Selenium. Chi-square was used to test for a significant difference between sociodemographic characteristics and BMI, while ANOVA was used to compare the levels of kidney, liver and heart indices as well as vitamin D, Zn and Se based on BMI status at 95% C.I. Most of the study participants were overweight 201 (29.7%) and obese 211 (31.2%), a large number had a normal BMI 32.9%. The prevalence of underweight was found to be 42(6.2%). there was a significant increase in the level of some kidney, liver and cardiac indices in participants who were overweight and obese compared to those who were normal and underweights, these significant increase was observed in the levels of Na, K, Cl, HCo3, ALP, AST, ALT, Cholesterol, LDL and TG. There was a significant decrease in levels of Vitamin D, Zn and Se in participants who were underweight. Underweight, overweight and obesity are emerging problem among HIV patients on ART. Patients undergoing ART should be placed under strict nutritional monitoring and be subjected to nutritional supplementation to avert untimely death, also effort should be made to address the burden of malnutrition by addressing identified determinants.","PeriodicalId":263752,"journal":{"name":"Magna Scientia Advanced Biology and Pharmacy","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130241606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
