It provides a general overview of the principle of resource sharing and identifies various obstacles to its application such as political, cultural, social, economic and legal problems. Possible solutions to these problems are suggested which include the need for African librarians to appreciate the importance of resource sharing and the establishment of a task force to initiate and develop a system for sharing information and resources in the region. African librarians should also take advantage of regional organizations such as the Organization of African and Economic Community of West African States provide the legal and governmental support for resource sharing. the writer concludes that despite the seemingly numerous problems, resource sharing has a future in Africa.","PeriodicalId":263653,"journal":{"name":"Vendors And Library Acquisitions","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130490021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of a library system with a main library and one or more branches, responsibility for collection development in many cases are centralized in the main library. In other cases, collection development responsibility rests entirely with the branch staff and primary clientele. Centralized collection development represents one extreme. Collection development autonomy for the site is seen as the other extreme. Responsibility shared by central and site staff is suggested as a more balanced and logical approach. Responsiveness to user needs is a key criterion of quality for branch library services. The close relationship between branch library staff and primary clientele produces a unique environment, including services expectations unfamiliar to and unacceptable to centralized operations. It is vital that branch librarians be involved if collection development is to be effective.","PeriodicalId":263653,"journal":{"name":"Vendors And Library Acquisitions","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126380724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To find out, a number of current and former acquisitions Librarians ere conflicted. They provided opinions and insights regarding: What academics libraries wan1 from their firm order vendors, what acquisitions librarians think firm order vendors want from academic libraries, what vendors think academic libraries want, and what the vendors want from academic libraries. Their answers revealed a complex, changing relationship. Both groups raised issues about levels of expectations, costs of new technology, and the direction in which the academic library-firm order vendor relationship appears to the headed. From these issues, the author concludes acquisitions librarians must become more attuned lo their own needs, better at communicating these needs lo their firm order vendors, more realistic about the costs of meeting these needs, and more aggressive in pursuing standardization of acquisitions processes","PeriodicalId":263653,"journal":{"name":"Vendors And Library Acquisitions","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127980904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Should librarians in small college libraries wish to consider the feasibility of an approval Ian, there are circumstances unique to that type of institution which may require a different approach to subject profiling than would be the case in the larger libraries. At the heart of each Ian is the individual library profile which is developed for each library and determines what materials will be sent. Although the profile is crucial to the success or failure of a plan, its role in determining a library's level of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the Ian has not been examined. Does the profile define and enforce the libraries wishes or does it serve to raise expectations? Two ARL libraries, the University of Georgia and Tulane University, for a time had university press approval plans with the same book jobber. Each organization had vastly different profiles and completely different reactions to their plans. Although unique circumstances on each campus played a role in the outcome of each plan, it appears that the profile served its stated purpose well - it defined wishes and also set expectations.","PeriodicalId":263653,"journal":{"name":"Vendors And Library Acquisitions","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114176011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
