This pervasive and unmotivating “we’re falling behind” story is built squarely on measures of economic growth, and on the assumption that growing the economy is what matters most. Lost in that formula, however, are qualities that make Nova Scotia a place its residents deeply value. Education levels are high in the province, as are measures for quality of life and community belonging. The region boasts abundant natural beauty. By many counts, Nova Scotia has already achieved the kind ...","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130339626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are opportunities for exploration, programmatic and policy action, and leadership in the public, private, academic, and nonprofit environments, and opportunities for leaders and actors across these sectors to champion—through words and actions—this new way of looking at the world and making decisions. The well-being framework may facilitate cross-sector collaboration by resetting the goals—not around individual issues or functions, but around the much broader idea of creating the right conditions for current and future generations to thrive. That said, there are also distinct roles and starting points within each sector, and the strategy for change may look different in every case. The chapter then outlines some potential actions within each sector and examples of learnings underway. It also explains that specific considerations and opportunities exist at local, regional, and national levels of government to advance a well-being agenda.","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115946362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are numerous examples from various countries where a well-being framework is catalyzing community and governmental action. There are significant challenges, but also opportunities to move from a set of experiments and time-limited innovations to sustainable changes across societies that improve well-being. This requires both urgency and long-term thinking; the work will advance through rapid experimentation and a commitment to generational change. And equity must be at the core of this change. The chapter then provides recommendations for policymakers and local and national leaders; news media; practitioners across sectors; and academics and researchers in economics, public health, and other fields.","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132666567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A shift is underway around the world to define and measure the conditions and outcomes of equitable well-being. From the World Health Organization (WHO) to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), economic and public health leaders are helping to promote an evidence-based understanding of human well-being. Global commissions charged with refining measures of progress have also advocated for the inclusion of well-being indicators. Ultimately, measurement has the potential to motivate and persuade people and institutions to act; it galvanizes people to address well-being across political divides; it helps capture and reflect on differences in well-being between populations, over time, and across places; it can drive narratives and discourse about well-being; and it can be used to establish accountability. The chapter then assesses what makes measures meaningful, how to interpret and use data to drive change, and the next steps for measuring well-being.","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115672843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dominant narratives reflect the prevailing social and political assumptions about what is most expected, valuable, or desirable and, therefore, worthy of investment and effort. Narratives do not just reflect assumptions, however—they also reinforce them. By telling people what to care about, narratives drive assessments of good and bad, right and wrong, success and failure. Moreover, narratives influence what policies and programs are implemented by power holders. The chapter then considers a constructive approach which would promote a narrative about progress that is centered on well-being, inclusive of economic factors. It also looks at opportunities, challenges, and best practices for changing narratives.","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131221858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A well-being approach—that is, establishing well-being as the goal and measure of what matters in order to create a future in which people, communities, and the planet can all thrive—provides a new compass for decision-making, resource allocation, social narrative, and even consciousness. The chapter highlights the benefits, positive outcomes, and potential for transformation via a well-being approach. Some of the key points include the ability of a well-being approach to: shift the focus to things that matter most to people and communities; create more urgency to address inequities and shift power; break down structural barriers and “silos” to encourage cross-sector collaboration; link human well-being and environmental sustainability; create a new expectation, demand, and accountability for a well-being agenda; and focus on the future through long-term agendas and inter-generational leadership. Meanwhile, key among the enabling conditions for well-being in the local context are truth telling about history and experiences, and ensuring that benefits are equitably shared.","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115450976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People in communities already have the answers to what well-being means to them. It is embedded in the wisdom traditions and the lived experiences, aspirations, hopes, and values of people all over the world. Instead of assuming that leaders will bring the well-being agenda to communities, leaders should instead look at what is happening already and build on what communities are already doing. Additionally, a benefit of engaging communities, people, and organizations as true partners in the work of defining well-being is that this engagement is a starting point for fostering grassroots demand for the implementation of a shared well-being agenda. At the same time, it is critical to practice radical inclusion and ensure that people from communities that are often—and have historically been—excluded from meaningful input and decision-making are engaged and contribute to an understanding of what well-being means. In addition to indigenous communities and racial or ethnic groups, this may include those who are living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, incarcerated, and struggling with substance abuse.","PeriodicalId":262438,"journal":{"name":"Well-Being: Expanding the Definition of Progress","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125165144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
