The various factors affecting this phenomenon are analyzed in detail using extensive EMTP (Electromagnetic Transients Program) simulations. These factors include the size and location of utility capacitor, point-on-wave switching angles on the three phases, and DC link parameters. In this paper, genetic algorithms (GAs) are applied to determine the worst-case DC overvoltage caused by nonsimultaneous energization of utility capacitor. The effectiveness of the proposed GA approach is verified by comparing results with traditional statistical approaches.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124151009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper suggests a semiconductor-based method to start the motor and to control the speed and the direction of rotation. This is achieved by feeding the two stator windings of a split-single-phase motor via two forced-commutated solid-state devices. Meanwhile, each winding is shunted by a free-wheeling path that is controlled as well by a forced-commutated solid-state device. Therefore high starting torques and low starting currents are realized. Speed control is easily achieved at higher motor efficiency, compared with the case of controlling the motor using forced-commutated electronic switches without free-wheeling paths. This paper computes detailed performance characteristics of the motor employing the suggested method. For this purpose, the motor is represented in the dqo reference frame. Then, the performance is described by a developed state s...","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128695577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is, therefore, proper to take into account the discrete behavior of converter operation while developing the system model for small signal stability analysis. This paper presents the development of such a system model, which also explicitly includes the effect of phase angle of respective AC bus voltages. A modular approach has been adopted for the formulation of complete state space system model. Utilizing the system model, the stability is examined in the controller parameter plane using eigenvalue analysis. The stability domains thus obtained are validated through detailed dynamic digital simulation.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126280287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accuracy of this method heavily depends on correct setting of the machine parameters within the estimator and the controller. The paper discusses sensorless indirect feed-forward current-fed rotor flux-orientedinduction motor drive in whichspeed estimation is performed utilizing rotor flux-based MRAS scheme. A study is conducted in order to evaluate speed estimation error and other detuning effects in both steady-state and transient operation of the drive caused by incorrect setting and/or variation of parameters. Theoretical principles behind the steady-state analysis are at first developed, and steady-state detuning effects are then evaluated. Two configurations of active shunt APF are presented using time domain analysis for compensation of three-wire (three-phase) and four-wire (three-phase with neutral) systems. For the sake of generality and simplicity, PI (Proportional-Integral) controllers have been proposed for the control of APF. The usefulness of the simulation approach to APF application is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The GA method, which is one of the most powerful tools for multiobjective optimization problems, is quantitatively performed to grasp trade-off relations between the two conflicting objectives (economy and emission impact) in the training set creation phase. Finally, a radial basis function ANN is trained by the orthogonal least squares learning algorithm to reach the optimal generations. The ANN models so developed have been tested to solve EELD problem on 6-bus and 71-bus power systems. The test results demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of obtaining well-coordinated optimal solutions suitable both in accuracy and speed while allowing flexibility in the operation of the generators.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130686267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To implement the coordinated tap changing, by taking into account interaction among different transformers, the developed scheme employs successive linearization and variable-structure control techniques. The designed mechanism can be a partial implementation of the full scheme. With appropriate simplification, only the local information, associated with the participating transformers, is needed to perform the control. In preventing the voltage instability, brought about by lack of coordination among tap changers, the developed scheme is superior to conventional decentralized methods.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129423470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design problem of PSS and SPS controller is formulated as an optimization problem. An eigenvalue-based objective function to increase the system damping is proposed. Then, GA is employed to search for optimal controller parameters. Different control schemes have been proposed and tested on a weakly connected power system with different disturbances, loading conditions, and parameter variations. It was observed that although the PSS enhances the power system stability, the SPS controller provides most of the damping and improves the voltage profile of the system. The nonlinear simulation results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control schemes over a wide range of loading conditions and system parameter variations.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128603608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
