A new method is developed to measure transmission line impedances and admittances from synchronized phasor measurements. Power system voltage and current phasors were recorded during commissioning tests of a 525 kV transmission system containing shunt and series compensation. Steady-state phase angles (delta) and magnitudes of line-side voltages and currents were measured relative to a satellite-based global time standard at two substations. Pairs of synchronized measurements were used to directly calculate real-time steadystate ABCD parameters. For comparison, two-port ABCD transmission system parameters were derived by classical methods and from an ElectroMagnetics Transients Program (EMTP) transmission system design model. To verify the accuracy of the measured parameters, a new method comparing field measured with calculated power flows was developed. Utilizing this property, a neural network-based detector, which identifies the faulty line directly by taking current and voltage patterns as feature vectors, has been designed. The quality of classification is not dependent on the transmission model, but rather on the net topology, training set, and the choice of learning law. A feed-forward multilayer perceptron, using the Back-Propagation Learning Algorithm, has been used to realize an optimal classifier. The classification quality, by simulating certain faults on the lines, has demonstrated the capability of the proposed approach for distribution power system protection.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"166 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127107679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A remarkable reduction in the electromagnetic torque harmonics, as well as a meaningful minimization of the machine current distortion, are evidenced with respect to a conventional induction motor. In traction applications, electromagnetic torque harmonics induce mechanical stress on the transmission apparatus and cause resonance phenomena. On the other hand, current harmonics interact with signaling transmission, deteriorating their quality. Both drawbacks are greatly reduced in the case of the DSC strategy applied to the proposed unconventional motor. Therefore, the presented results are relevant in electrical traction, showing that the introduction of induction motors with two three-phase stator winding sets offers new interesting solutions.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121535817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of both the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and the power system stabilizers (PSS) are incorporated. The saturation is represented accurately using static and dynamic saturated inductances. The alternator is modelled accurately by a detailed equivalent circuit which represents properly the saturation effects under the dynamic conditions. Based on this circuit, the damping and synchronizing torque coefficients have been calculated by a least square algorithm. The effects of both the AVR and the PSS on the torque components are studied over a wide range of operating conditions. With the aid of the thermal and mechanical constraints and the limits imposed by the alternator dynamic stability on the operating conditions, a capability diagram of the alternator has been developed.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134050692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has provedto be a powerful tool to study those transients that have time-localized information. In this paper, the insight to be gained from using multiresolution analysis and scalograms is presented. With multiresolution analysis, the original signal is transformed into coefficients in different octave levels. From the scalogram of the respective coefficients at each level, the special features of the original signals become distinctive. Advantages of the wavelet transform over the Fourier transform are also presented. Typical power transients are used to test the method to illustrate its applicability in the analysis of power transients.","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130849413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach could be extended to other limited motion actuators which require high tracking accuracy, but are subject to a single dominant nonlinear element, such as magnetic stiffness, which may be defined experimentally. One example is the variable reluctance linear actuator, used in the aerospace industry for control of aerodynamic surfaces. Despite the significant nonlinearities inherent in the torque motor, a complex nonlinear controller can be designed using simple linear design techniques, and it is demonstrated that the motor is then able to track the reference signal with a very high accuracy. The hybrid scheme uses a multicompensator, multiloop linear controller to reshape substantially the motor response characteristics, which have both inherent time-lag and oscillatory dynamics and an additional nonlin...","PeriodicalId":262115,"journal":{"name":"Electric Machines and Power Systems","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129028248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
