Since optical signals cannot penetrate through walls or other opaque barriers, the security of infrared WLANs is very high and there is no interference between rooms. This makes cell planning easier, and the potential capacity of an optical-based network in a building is extremely high. However, an optical link is susceptible to path loss and multipath dispersion. In addition, the average transmit power is constrained by eye-safety regulations and power consumption concerns. Modulation, equalization and error-control coding techniques are considered to overcome these drawbacks, especially the effects of multipath dispersion. Pulse-position modulation (PPM) has been employed for IrDA and IEEE802.11 standards because it offers high power efficiency. We introduce a combination of pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) and differential pulse-position modulation (DPPM), named differential amplitude pulse-position modulation (DAPPM), in order to gain a better compromise between power and bandwidth efficiency. Since these modulation schemes over an ISI channel can be represented by a trellis diagram, their channel capacity is determined using a method for calculating the capacity of a Markov process channel. Although maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) is the optimal soft decision decoder (SDD) for DPPM systems, its complexity is extremely high. SNSA is a tool for computing scalable design of experiments through components such as a discrete-event simulation engine, default and extensible model designs, and a state of the art XML interface. Developers are able to design and implement their own protocol designs, network topologies and modeling scenarios. For each configuration, the experimental setup is implemented and the corresponding simulation program is presented using Simulink under Matlab. The simulated and experimental instantaneous voltage and current waveforms in case of resistive and inductive loads are matched well, validating the simulation comparison for analysis. The comparison analysis includes the required number of devices and isolated gate signals, which determines the complexity and the size, hence the overall cost. Also harmonic spectrum, total harmonic distortion, effective rms value, dc offset and the control range are compared to specify the performance. The implementation of a fixed-capacitor thyristor controlled reactor (FC-TCR) and three phase induction motor starters (SOFT STARTER) as two application case studies of AC voltage regulators has been discussed. The audio signal under consideration, which is assumed to be integer-valued, as in the case of fixed-point implementation, is first decorrelated using the appropriate integer transform. The resulting integer coefficients are then entropy-coded to produce the output stream. Several integer transforms have been considered, such as the integer wavelet transform (IntWT) with different decomposition levels as well as different filters, the integer discrete cosine transform (IntDCT), and the integer Walsh Hadamard transform (IntWHT). Arithmetic and Huffman coding have been used for entropy coding. Four different categories of approaches are investigated and compared. The first is distribution-based where a statistical data model is assumed for the SAR image data. The second category contains one approach that is based upon principal component analysis (PCA). The third category employs different neural network architectures. The last category utilizes support vector machines (SVM). It contains the classical SVM implementation and an enhanced implementation proposed elsewhere by the authors in which the traditional Euclidean kernel is replaced by a new one that is more suitable for the application in question. Experimental results are presented. However, some of these terms either have overlapping meanings or contain ambiguities in their definitions presenting problems to those who attempt a rigorous evaluation of the performance of such systems. The phenomenon arises because the wide range of disciplines covered by the term information technology have developed their own distinct terminologies. This paper presents a systematic approach for determining common and complementary characteristics of five widely-used concepts, dependability, fault-tolerance, reliability, security, and survivability. The approach consists of comparing definitions, attributes, and evaluation measures for each of the five concepts and developing corresponding relations.
