The aim of the segmentation of fingerprint is to extract the region of interest; foreground; and to exclude the background regions, in order to reduce the time of subsequent processing and to avoid detecting false features. This paper presents a new approach of segmentation and enhancement of fingerprints. This approach is based on the fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCM), statistical features and frame differences Experimental results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methods. We have tested this technique on 100 images taken from database FVC2004.","PeriodicalId":259067,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Communications, Computing and Control Applications (CCCA)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129670038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increasing demand for a more accurate and detailed description of realistic phenomena leads to high dimensional dynamical systems and hence, simulation often yields an increased computational effort. An approximation, e.g. with model order reduction techniques, of these large-scale systems becomes therefore crucial for a cost efficient simulation. This paper focuses on a model order reduction method for linear time in-variant (LTI) systems based on modal approximation via dominant poles. There, the original large-scale LTI system is projected onto the left and right eigenspaces corresponding to a specific subset of the eigenvalues of the system matrices, namely the dominant poles of the system's transfer function. Since these dominant poles can lie anywhere in the spectrum, specialized eigenvalue algorithms that can compute eigentriplets of large and sparse matrices are required. The Jacobi-Davidson method has proven to be a suitable and competitive candidate for the solution of various eigenvalue problems and hence, we discuss how it can be incorporated into this modal truncation approach. Generalizations of the reduction technique and the application of the algorithms to second-order systems are also investigated. The computed reduced order models obtained with this modal approximation can be combined with the ones constructed with Krylov subspace or balanced truncation based model order reduction methods to get even higher accuracies.","PeriodicalId":259067,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Communications, Computing and Control Applications (CCCA)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123498928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Handover is one of the major tasks that are used to support continuous transmission for a mobile terminal into different radio coverage area. Optimizing the existing handover protocol requires integrating new functionalities. This work focuses on presenting and optimizing handover algorithm. We analyze handover time in wireless local area networks based on the IEEE 802.11b MAC protocol. In fact, scan phase is the main contributor to the handover time. Then, we propose a handover model which replaces a scan phase by a positioning process. This model is able to select the suitable access point (AP) based on the shortest distance far from the mobile terminal (MT). Proposed Handover allows a mobile user to reacting quickly to decide about to which access point to connect. This kind of problem is usually known to be non-linear, high-dimensional, with a complex search space which may be riddled with many local minima, and results in irregular objective functions. We investigate here the performance and the application of a radial basis function artificial neural network (RBF-ANN) type, in the tomographic velocity reconstruction. The proposed structure has the advantage of being easily trained by means of a back-propagation algorithm without getting stuck in local minima. An adequate cross-validation test is run to ensure the performance of the network on new data sets. The application of such a network to synthetic data shows that the inverted seismic velocity section was efficient. A comparative reconstruction with tow classical methods was performed using Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) Conjugate Gradient (CG). The results clearly show improvements of the quality of the reconstruction obtained by radial basis function artificial neural network.","PeriodicalId":259067,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Communications, Computing and Control Applications (CCCA)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114625616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As number of measurements grows, a strategy is needed to select and efficiently analyze the useful information from the whole data set. The main objective of the proposed process is to attempt to reach a more accurate classification task and to achieve a more compact representation of the underlying structure of the data.
