The populations of this study are the research scholars, faculty members and experts belonging to five disciplines from ten institutes in Iran. For the purpose of data collection, a well-structured questionnaire was designed and administrated randomly to the 2,390 faculty, research scholars and expert and 1,550 questionnaires were returned with a response rate of 64.85%. The study reveals that majority of libraries have not adopted collection development techniques. A great majority of the respondents (572; 36.9%) rated their constraints regarding the use of resources and services as `Not having updated catalogue' (Mean=3.20) in `Agree' and more than one fifth the respondents (412; 26.6%) `Uncertain'. In order to test whether a number of barriers would hinder the collection development in SRI libraries, this was tested with the help of x2 test. The test conducted for 30 degrees of freedom at the 0.01 level of significance which showed that there are a number of barriers in the collection development (x2 value=274.97, p=0.000<;0.05). Hence, the research hypothesis is supported i.e., a number of barriers would hinder the collection development in the libraries under survey.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132275266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This impacts service and access to information particularly as it pertains to critical broadband access. Funding and service trends have changed, especially as it relates to public libraries, with some modifications working to their advantage and some to their detriment. As information is increasingly moving online, libraries are struggling to opt into an infrastructure that will best meet the needs of their users. This is especially true in rural areas that have a very small tax base, and yet need to provide access to e-government and other key information so that their communities can be a part of a democratic society. The National Broadband Plan and the Universal Service Fund are both politically controversial measures to try to address these needs, and are used as an illustration of how these programs can impact access in the states. The author will also explore demographics, grant programs and private telecommunication interests in rural areas, where the only access point to online information may be at the local library.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122714479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To provide e-journals service to the users, most of the libraries have either formed libraries consortia or joined some e-journals consortia. In many foreign countries like USA, UK the e-journals services are very common. Now, many libraries in India also have started online access to e-journals to their users either through consortium or e-journals access along with print journals subscription by paying extra content fee. This paper discusses the developments of e-resources consortia in India in brief as well as their role in promoting e-journals among the users through information centres/ libraries at comparatively low price. The paper also mentions some of important issues related to e-journals consortia in India and their possible solutions.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127103193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pervasiveness of the Internet and the increasing use of mobile devices bring about a new demand for 24×7 access to library resources. This has given the NLB an impetus to digitise more materials and make them accessible to the general public through Internet search engines. With the National Archives of Singapore joining the NLB from 1 November 2012, the amount of resources on and about Singapore increased significantly, and greater efforts have been put into digitising these materials and improving the search and find function of the NLB's search service. This paper describes the efforts made by the NLB over the past few years, and looks ahead at what else is possible with the new technologies available.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116782075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially in digital archives, there are several data and document models to be considered. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all document model or system. For each application, the requirements and properties of a project have to be analyzed. In many cases, on one hand, a developer mostly together with a domain expert has to carry out time-consuming tests with possible solutions. On the other hand, one of the most important questions is sustainability and long-term archiving. Questions regarding these aspects are raised during the technical implementation, at least. In many academic projects, the maintenance and sustainability aspects leave open questions. Therefore, challenges, problems and solutions regarding document models, software systems, and sustainability are exhaustively analyzed in this paper. This is done in the context of the digital archive project DARL (Digitales Archiv Rostocker Liederbuch, engl. Digital Archive of the Rostock Songbook) conducted at University of Rostock.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115310764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve greater efficiency in the rapidly changing environment, libraries are increasingly looking for new paradigms to deliver services to users on their desktops. Library portals play a crucial role by creating a web environment where users can easily access information. It not only offers services but also enhances scholarly communication and research among the patrons of the library. This paper describes the portal of Space Applications Centre (SAC) Library at ISRO, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and designed using Joomla: A Content Management System (CMS). An attempt has been made here to explain the various services provided through this portal to the ISRO/DOS users so that they can become effective information seekers and evaluate information efficiently and effectively. It also highlights how it tries to meet user expectations of information on demand as well as in anticipation.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131619046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Often the sheer quantities of data that is stored or archived in repositories or digital libraries make it difficult to navigate data; information in the data is obscured, particularly where we have Big Data. Traditionally, we record metadata on our data items to assist data classification and some information retrieval. The Semantic Web enables us to further unlock and enrich our data, by exploring how different data are related or connected. Using ontologies and Linked Data we can declare, navigate and discover semantic relationships. Relationships exist both locally, within the data, and globally, such that we can enhance our data with information retrieved from a wider context. To illustrate how the application of Semantic Web technologies aids data discovery and information retrieval, I discuss two case studies: (1) Sharing Ancient Wisdoms (SAWS), a Dynamic Library of information on selected ancient wisdom literature; and (2) the DEFRA DTC archive, a repository of data about freshwater quality in the UK.","PeriodicalId":253780,"journal":{"name":"2015 4th International Symposium on Emerging Trends and Technologies in Libraries and Information Services","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114998553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
