In the event of a collision, the intended solution employs an in-band modem that transmits vehicle location, airbag deployment, and other relevant information timely and reliably from the in-vehicle system (IVS) over the cellular network voice channel to the public safety answering point (PSAP). This paper describes the requirements, system design and performance of the eCall in-band modem solution that was selected by 3GPP. Due to the employment of this solution in life-critical situations, transmission reliability and speed are of utmost importance. The effective transmission channel is characterized by the highly nonlinear speech codec, as well as radio channel impairments, constituting a challenge for the in-band transmission of digital data. Several innovative transmission concepts were developed for our eCall in-band modem solution to address this challenge.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124792655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It would be desirable to be able to run the implementation of a given protocol stack (or of multiple stacks) over different real-life test- beds obtaining comparable results. This requires standardized interfaces to remotely access and control a federation of test- beds, tools to gather data on the protocol performance without affecting the network operations, as well as ways to standardize how data needed to compute the metrics of interest are gathered and analyzed. This paper describes the design and use of JAMES, a new Test-bed Management System for WSNs that addresses all these challenges. We also discuss the use of JAMES features to ease the experimental evaluation of protocol stacks we have developed. Our experiments show that only a few tens of lines need to be written to be able to execute tests on a given protocol stack and that JAMES operations are transparent to the stack behavior.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129834430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is due to the introduction and refinement of sophisticated communication mechanisms such as multiple input multiple output (MIMO), hybrid ARQ, channel-aware scheduling, or node cooperation. Many of these mechanisms require detailed multi-cell simulation models for their performance evaluation. This involves computationally extensive models of the wireless multi-path fading channel, which quickly becomes a bottleneck with respect to simulation time. It is therefore of great interest to reduce the amount of computation time spent in the channel calculation. In this paper, we present an attractive approach that off loads the channel computation to a massively parallel but inexpensive NVIDIA graphics card. We discuss the parallel architecture of the resulting simulation system, and study the involved synchronization and communication aspects. We show that the developed system achieves a speed-up factor of about 30 compared to an implementation on regular PC hardware.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129905650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Base Station (BS) requires DL Channel State Information (CSI) estimated by and fed back from the Mobile Station (MS) for separating the DL signals to be transmitted to the MSs from the BS. We investigate the achievable system performance subject to finite-accuracy CSI feedback. The achievable receiver performance is investigated with the aid of Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) Charts. Further- more, a novel concept, referred to as the EXIT-Chart Optimized CSI Quantization (ECO-CQ) is proposed. The ECO-CQ scheme assists the system in maintaining the lowest possible CSI feedback overhead, while ensuring that an open EXIT-tunnel is still attainable, which implies maintaining an infinitesimally low BER. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed ECO-CQ may reduce the normalized feedback overhead compared to the conventional CQ. For instance, the ECO-CQ aided iterative DL-SDMA system using an average of q =2 .7 quantization bits per CIR coefficient achieves a 10% normalized overhead reduction at Eb/N0 =5 dB, compared to the conventional CQ aided benchmarker system.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126673701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, MIMO communications for UWB provides the ability to take advantage of the rich multipath diversity inherent to UWB communications in order to provide enhanced robustness to fading as well as improved coverage in non line-of-sight scenarios. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the spatial correlation of UWB signals in a forest environment. Propagation measurements were performed using a 620 picosecond duration UWB pulse in four different forest environments: light brush, light, medium, and dense forest at distances of up to 50 meters. The mean spatial correlation was observed to vary based on forest environment, antenna type, antenna array orientation, and transmitter-receiver separation distance. These measurement results should aid in the development of MIMO algorithms for UWB outdoor communications.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126896545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimal precoding involves dirty paper coding (DPC) technique, and it is highly nonlinear and complex. On the other hand, complete inter-user interference cancellation using linear zero-forcing or block diagonalization precoding are suboptimal. Hence, we consider successive zero-forcing precoding, which achieves improved system throughput compared to block diagonalization by allowing users to work under limited interference. Due to the dimensionality constraint of linear precoding techniques user scheduling is required. The optimal user scheduling involves exhaustive search, which becomes very complex for realistic numbers of users and transmit antennas. In addition, for successive zero-forcing precoding the order in which users are precoded successively is important for sum rate maximization, which further increases the complexity of exhaustive search. In this paper we develop a low complexity greedy user scheduling algorithm for successive zero-forcing precoding, which incorporates various user ordering techniques. Simplified heuristic scheduling metrics are proposed, which are shown to perform close to the exhaustive search method. A suboptimal user ordering technique that is similar to the order, in which the proposed greedy user selection selects users, is proposed. Further simplification of regular greedy scheduling algorithm is obtained with the proposed intermediate user grouping technique. The proposed algorithm is of low complexity, but provides performance close to the highly complex exhaustive search algorithm.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123363914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
