These networks present some special features, such as high mobility or specific topologies, which affect the performance of applications. In order to select the appropriate technologies, more effort should be directed to identify the final necessities of the network. Few works identify possible applications of vehicular networks, but none of them link application requirements which networking technologies available in the vehicular field. In this paper, we fill this gap, and propose an analysis of application requirements and study how to deal with them using communication technologies for the physical and network level. This study contains key factors which must be taken into account, especially, at the designing stage of the vehicular network.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122192102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 802.11e standard for QoS is analysed, compared to legacy ones, new algorithms being developed in order to improve it. All this was done in multi-service, multi-profile scenarios, with a varying number of users, in order to emulate the behaviour of real networks. QoS mechanisms manage to increase performance in all analysed scenarios, e.g., up to 7 times less delay, but these values are fixed. New algorithms for the QoS mechanisms were tested, i.e., changing channel access parameters to see if better performance can be achieved. It can be seen that better performance may be achieved by fine-tuning up the network \"on the fly\", i.e., by varying the parameters and adapting them according to the network location and usage profile at a given instant. All the performance analyses were done by using the OPNET Modeler simulation tool with its wireless module.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117034254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the inclusion of innovative sensing and actuating facilities, the potential application space of these new devices is huge. The challenge now becomes harnessing the abilities' of these instruments in innovative ways. It is the aim of this paper to provide a unique service rich architecture integrating some of these novel sensing capabilities (i.e. GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) to provide a potential \"killer application\" in the location and tracking space. Existing tracking systems in the mobile devices area are quite invasive for the user and labour intensive from a commercial perspective. When they operate in a centralized manner, they are not able to guarantee the upper-bound of the channel allocation time. This paper considers a new channel allocation algorithm that works under the environments of directional antennas. It allocates channels in a distributed manner and also adaptively by reflecting the traffic demand. To do so, we reconstruct the network into several groups to apply 2P MAC protocol, remove the interference caused by the directional antennas, and allocate a channel to each link without resorting to a central manager. Through simulation work, we prove that our distributed and adaptive channel allocation (DACA) achieves good performance, in terms of packet drop and channel allocation delay, compared with the other competitive channel allocation algorithms.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128229251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve this goal, the physical-layer service process is first modeled as a multidimensional finite-state Markov chain. Then, based on this multidimensional Markov model, the QoS performance at the data-link layer is characterized using the effective capacity approach. Queueing analysis using this effective capacity function is finally used in a cross-layer design approach aiming to satisfy the required average packet loss probability constraint by maximizing the average throughput of the system. Numerical examples are provided to show the advantages of our approach compared to other approaches using first-order amplitude-based finite state Markov models.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128325488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The expression of the system capacity in HF relay is provided. Two situations about the power constraint are concerned, and under each situation, the selection criterion among different forwarding schemes in HF relay is proposed by means of capacity comparison on the subcarrier pair. From the selection criterions, the source or relay can adaptively choose the best scheme for every subcarrier pair according to the channel condition. Then the optimal solutions of the relay PA and the joint PA are derived to maximize the capacity. In the simulation, the advantage of the HF relay is shown in terms of capacity improvement compared with the conventional forward relay.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124593188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The OOK detection threshold, however, must be carefully selected to minimize the bit error probability (BER). This is a challenging task to accomplish on resource-limited nodes or on networks with high-mobility. In this paper, an efficient algorithm to compute the optimal threshold is proposed. The system scenario considers nodes simultaneously transmitting over same frequencies in Rayleigh-log-normal or Rice-log-normal fad- ing conditions. It is shown that by using the Stirling expansion for the BER, and a log-normal approximation, a quick contraction- mapping can be built to achieve the threshold numerically. The mapping is simple to implement and converges quickly. Numerical simulations verify the validity of the theoretical analysis, and show that the new algorithm performs quite well in scenarios of practical interest.","PeriodicalId":253546,"journal":{"name":"VTC Spring 2009 - IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124749281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
