The main advantages achieved by using the object-oriented techniques include easy maintenance, enhanced expandability and inherent implementation flexibility. This paper presents recent software developments of a fault location system implemented using object-oriented approaches and C++ programming language. The proposed new algorithms, implementation techniques, and evaluation studies are addressed. The developed system aims at pinpointing faults on transmission systems by utilizing recorded data coming from digital fault recorders (DFRs) sparsely located at various substations. The concept of \"waveform matching\" is implemented by taking advantage of the power system model. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented. A unique genetic algorithm based search engine for pinpointing the most probable fault location is proposed. Uehara","doi":"10.1109/PESW.2001.917218","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/PESW.2001.917218","url":null,"abstract":"On May 24, 2000, the islanded system mode test of Kii-channel HVDC Link (bipolar, 1400 MW) and Tachibana-bay unit 1 (cross-compound, coal-fired, 1050 MW) was performed during its commissioning tests. Both the HVDC system and the generator continued to operate stably during islanded system mode. About 20 minutes later, the system was connected to the AC system again by re-closing the circuit breaker that was hand-tripped, and the system was restored. This paper presents the results of the islanded system mode test. The performance of some functions implemented to be able to operate in the islanded system mode was verified. The torsional vibration observed on the turbine-shaft was in stability, the contribution to the damping of SSDC was verified. High-temperature and low-density SF/sub 6/ gas generated by a heavy current interruption is distributed inhomogeneously in the grounded tank, and can strongly threaten the dielectric capability of the GCB. Few studies, however, have been carried out on the dielectric characteristics of the inhomogeneous hot gas. Using small gap discharges, the hot gas behavior of a GCB model, having breakdown or no breakdown, was investigated. The temperature of the hot gas flowing through the exhaust tube was estimated from the sparking voltage of the small gap installed in the exhaust tube. It was also found that there was very little or no effect on breakdown voltages of the cool gas in the breakdown paths. This suggests that the breakdown voltage of inhomogeneous hot gas could be obtained as the applied voltage at which the electrical field strength equals E/sub crit/ of local hot gas at the location concerned.","PeriodicalId":253534,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. These concerns include power system harmonics and harmonic distortion under unbalance voltage condition during voltage sags occurrence. The definition proposed focuses on system faults due to lightning. The voltage unbalance causes large unbalance source currents resulting in excessive input current and high distortion. The percentage of total harmonic distortion of input current (THD/sub i/) increased approximately 47% at 6 per unit of normal peak current. The measurement and analysis of such events has been performed. The proposed algorithm is adapted from a proven robotic ball-catching algorithm, which includes fast learning. For instability prediction, the ball location is replaced by measured relative generator rotor angle. Using the measured relative rotor angle, the control algorithm predicts the rotor angle at a future time. The relative rotor angle is sampled at a rate of 600 times per second. This new fast learning algorithm predicts the rotor angle 500 milliseconds into the future. The increase of the generator relative rotor angle beyond a predetermined threshold is a prediction that loss of synchronism will occur. Historically, such information has been distributed among a wide number of different departments at different locations making it difficult and expensive to perform an accurate assessment. For this reason, maintenance has not been performed on the basis of actual machine condition but, rather, at regular intervals using the manufacturer’s recommendations. The difficulty in being able to quickly access information, generate work orders, and track prices and progress has led to inefficient and costly maintenance practices which can be improved to reduce costs.. Recent developments in computer software technology make it possible to economically integrate relevant plant operations, equipment, planning, and systems information. This feature permits easy access by all appropriate personnel within the corporation. When these new technologies are blended with new management processes relating to maintenance, outages, asset condition assessment, project justification and prioritization, unit dispatch, and reservoir management, the results are improved efficiency and reduced costs with high reliability. This panel session brings together suppliers, consultants and users to present the state-ofthe-technology in Computer Maintenance Management Systems and to relate their experiences in selection, development and implementation of such systems in the electric power industry and, specifically, in hydroelectric power generating plants.
