A recently proposed methodology of extreme programming (XP) is a methodology pertaining to small to medium sized teams and developing software in the face of vague or rapidly changing requirements. It has been assumed that XP will ease software development process and decrease its maintenance cost. However, unfortunately little or no experimentation has been reported in the literature to support these assumptions. This work reports results of experimentation regarding data collection via hands on experience of application of extreme programming to evaluate its effectiveness to enhance productivity. The work includes the development of a framework for distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) services. We have experimented with all the facets of XP and the management of change in the research environment has been critically analyzed and reported. Enam","doi":"10.1109/INMIC.2003.1416749","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/INMIC.2003.1416749","url":null,"abstract":"Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an increasingly popular treatment modality for Parkinson's disease (PD) based on chronic electrical stimulation of the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia are responsible for regulating motor control of the human body, a function exemplified by disease states such as PD. We describe a novel technique based on a chronically implantable neural prosthetic device that could be used as a potential treatment in many basal ganglia disorders, including PD. The prosthetic device implements a fuzzy control of the baseline excitation of the motor cortex and derives a feedback loop from the thalamocortical pathway, thus forming a closed loop control. It improves over DBS by being self-adjustable, thereby eradicating the need of repeated adjustments of various parameters of the excitatory signal(s). The neural prosthetic device can be implanted in a rat brain and the fuzzy control rule set be derived from in vitro organotypic slice culture models of the basal ganglia.","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. FFT is a complex function whose computational accuracy, hardware size and processing speed depends on the type of arithmetic format used to implement it. Due to the non-linearity of FFT, its computational accuracy is not easy to calculate theoretically. Therefore statistical or simulation methods are used. A simulation method to calculate the performance (hardware size, computational accuracy) of the FFT, based on fixed-point and floating-point formats, has been used. The paper demonstrates how a simple 64-point FFT, based on the fixed point arithmetic format has a performance comparable to that of a complex floating point arithmetic format. Comparison has been made between a fixed point FFT simulation model and a floating point reference model. The results deduced from comparison have shown that both the approaches provide similar results. The recognition system developed is based on data sets of 40 speakers for each Arabic phonetic sound. As a first step towards recognition of phonemes, the sound is sampled and then preprocessed to get formant frequencies and intensity contours. Room temperature SEM have to be fabricated at the nanometer scale and require a quantum mechanical treatment for their modeling. We have developed a semi-classical mathematical model for an electron tunneling into the memory node of a single tunnel junction SEM. We have used the 1D Schrodinger equation and elementary statistical physics and electromagnetics. We proceed by assuming the channel (reservoir) electrons to be a non-interacting free electron system, and show how an applied bias can increase the probability of electron tunneling. We have applied the model to an SEM reported in Futatsugi et al. A multilayer feed-forward neural network based on backpropagation algorithm is used for image restoration. The neural network is trained by applying backpropagation with momentum for fast convergence. The results of the backpropagation neural network model are compared to that of Wiener filter for high, moderate and low signal to noise ratio (SNR) blur functions. Improvement in signal to noise ratio (ISNR) is taken as a performance measure. It is observed that backpropagation neural network learns well in each case and restores all the test images reasonably, while Wiener filter performs well for high and moderate SNR blur but performs poorly for the low SNR case. ISNR values of 5.58 db, 5.15 db and 5.13 db has been achieved with this scheme for the peppers image, in comparison to values of 4.17db, 2.71db and -0.93db using Wiener filter for high, moderate and low SNR blur respectively.","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003.
