Park","doi":"10.31720/JGA.2.2.4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31720/JGA.2.2.4","url":null,"abstract":"Korea Christian churches and missionaries have a prominent presence around the world. In cities such as Yanji and Los Angeles, Korean churches are an essential part of century-old Korean ethnic communities that trace their origins to Japanese colonization that began in the late-1800s. More recently, the economic success of South Korean corporations has resulted in Korean churches and missionaries in global metropoles such as Beijing, London, and Singapore that serve thriving Korean communities anchored by corporate transnationals, entrepreneurs, and international students. This same economic growth has financed Korean missionaries from Africa to Central Asia to undertake projects ranging from health care to education. While all Korean churches and missionaries have comfortably imbued the global religion of Christianity with their national and ethnic identity, the differences in national and local contexts shape their individual beliefs and practices. Given the dramatic changes in both Korean and its diasporic histories, each Korean church selects from rich and complex vocabularies of religion, nation, ethnicity, and community to negotiate and articulate its mission and identity. Within this context, this article focuses on two Korean churches-one from Beijing and another from Tokyo-as emblematic case studies of global religion and local faith.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115541682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three scenarios on a trade war between China and the United States are assumed in this study. Scenario 1 is a case in which the United States imposes 25% tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods and China reciprocates with 25% retaliatory tariffs on $34 billion worth of U.S. goods. Scenario 2 is a combination of Scenario 1 with a case in which the United States imposes 25% tariffs on additional $15 billion worth of Chinese goods and China responds with 25% retaliatory tariffs on additional $15 billion worth of U.S. goods. Scenario 3 is a combination of Scenario 2 with a case in which the United States imposes 10% tariffs on additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods and China responds with 10% retaliatory tariffs on additional $140 billion worth of U.S. goods. The simulation results of the three scenarios are presented in terms of real GDP, equivalent variation (EV) as a measure of welfare, bilateral trade values, and trade balance of all countries in this study. Although the United States and China are predicted to run a trade surplus as a result of the trade war, they would have to pay for the trade war in terms of a lower economic growth and welfare. This is because the United States and China would not be able to use the lower-priced imported intermediate inputs from each other to produce exports.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125303052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anouvong pursued the liberation of Laos from Thailand by military campaign in the 1820s. However, this campaign failed, with Anouvong himself being captured and brought to Bangkok, where he died. Viangchan was totally destroyed, and the kingdom was incorporated into Thailand as a province. By erecting the statue, the Lao authority which has been recently trying to reestablish and restore the Lao history especially in relation to Thailand seems to be attaching historical importance to the resistance and liberation campaigns of Anouvong against Thailand. Lao and Thai historiographies show different interpretations of Anouvong’s liberation war, especially concerning the cause and purpose of the war, the question of Khunying Mo’s role, and the cause of Anouvong’s defeat. Lao and Thai authorities and scholars attempt to defend or justify the standpoint of their own country in explaining crucial events or situations of the war. However, a nationalist sentiment seems to underlie the different interpretations of them in any case, though there are some differences in extent.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116577407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the World Bank, Haiti is a low income country. The international remittance is the most important source of foreign earning of Haiti. The statistics from the World Bank in 2017 revealed that Haiti was the 4th country as a recipient of the remittances of the world. The remittance inflow accounted for 29 per cent of its GDP. Although, the international remittance is the most important source of foreign income in Haiti, its contribution to economic development has not been rigorously analyzed. Consequently, this study examines the impact of remittance on economic growth of Haiti using time-series data model over the period from 1970 to 2017. The empirical results from the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model indicate the negative impact of remittance on economic growth. This finding is confirmed by the result from the Toda-Yamamoto Granger non-causality analysis. However, our findings show that the remittance contributes to the people’s wellbeing, which is represented by the Human Development Index (HDI).","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134448440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The U.S. government has pursued this policy for most of the time during Obama and now under Trump administration. This study not only explains the relations between the United States and Pakistan as a result of ‘do more’ policy but also analyzes the facts as to what would be the effect of this policy on Pakistan under Trump administration. However, knowing the fact that the Islamic state did not change its counter-terrorism strategy in past when President Obama suspended its aid to Pakistan to build pressure. Moreover, the study also evaluates how Trump administration’s strategy affects the foreign policy of Pakistan. Therefore, this research reviews the main features of the policy and analyzes its consequences on both the countries followed by discussion on the policy’s future prospects.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133876847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
