Rather than a standard case of politicization dividing the left and right, judgments of the threat posed by the coronavirus do not clearly align with traditional cleavages, as both left- and right-wing leaders have disregarded bad news about the pandemic. This paper examines the responses of the right-wing Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil and the left-wing Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico, both of whom trivialized and often dismissed the pandemic. These leaders share a populist style of politics which posits a struggle between a wholesome people on the one handand a class of parasitic elites on the other. This totalizing struggle in which the people must prevail mandates an agenticand oppositional posture toward national problems. Thus, populists spend more time attacking their perceived enemies than they do underlying conditions - like a virus - that can have no malevolent intentions. Populist movements therefore upend the capacity for recognizing material threats to public well-being, calling into question the capacity of populist governments to meet challenges likely to emerge in a post-COVID environment.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115778748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indonesian citizens living abroad have consequences for democracy, especially on fulfilling the political right to participate in elections. The relations between the citizen-home country and participation in the election may become part of long-distance democracy. In 2009, Indonesian citizens abroad had the opportunity to participate in the direct presidential election. Then, in 2014, they also had the opportunity to participate in the legislative elections. In 2019, they experienced simultaneous presidential and legislative elections. The overseas voters’ participation in presidential elections increases, but participation in legislative elections stagnates or declines. Indonesia’s long-distance democracy has practical and theoretical implications. First, political parties are starting to consider overseas voters. Second, political parties began to build relationships with Indonesian community groups abroad, organize their communication and campaign strategies, and pay attention to the diaspora issues. Third, although the number of voters abroad is minimal compared to domestic voters, the increase in the number of emigrants and diasporas and their participation in overseas elections will bring the study of political parties in Indonesia beyond national borders. In other words, Indonesia’s long-distance democracy will bring political party studies to a transnational level.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"40 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125743796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the process of industrialization and urbanization, China’s energy sector experienced numerous changes. As the energy sector has been increasingly affecting China’s economic structure, scholars at home and abroad have been constantly working on issues related it. Among them, one of the most important topics is related to investment in the energy sector.\u0000It is universally acknowledged that investment plays a fairly important role in improving the development an industry, including the energy sector. In order to analyze the characteristics of China’s investment in its energy sector from both regional and industrial dimensions, an overview of China’s energy sector was conducted and a few factors that could influence its development based on a literature review approach were analyzed. Additionally, an empirical analysis on China’s energy sector investment structure from 2004-2017 using entropy statistics was conducted. Entropy analysis of energy sector investment was performed in both the industrial dimension and the provincial dimension, aiming at providing a scene of energy investment allocation.\u0000Based on the entropy analysis of China’s energy sector investment during the period of 2004-2017, a discussion is presented on several factors that have influenced changes in China’s energy investments’ structure such as energy price, environmental regulation, resource endowment, and regional economic development situation. The findings point to 3 different kinds of energy investment portfolios in China, which are resource-based type, economy-based type and mix type. In addition, the energy investment portfolios of each type are affected by different factors in some way.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130768690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Profit and Loss Sharing (PLS) as a bank financing scheme offers an alternative model with flexibility in meeting the Covid-19 economic crisis by providing equity orientation for the MSMEs. This research aimed to investigate the contribution of PLS in supporting the MSMEs’ economic recovery packages in the AMS during the New Normal post Covid-19. For this purpose, this research posits the comparative evidence of PLS contribution by gathering data from the central banks, financial authorities, commercial banks and literature reviews related to economic recovery policies in the AMS. The result indicates that PLS can provide an alternative model for supporting MSMEs by allowing all parties to share both risks and losses in their capital input ratio.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130476314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among them, China has gained attention because of its rising power and influence in global economics and politics. This article aims to facilitate the understanding of international humanitarian assistance and to identify the overview of China’s humanitarian assistance in terms of backgrounds, trends, and size. It can be possible to identify the priorities of its humanitarian assistance and to predict the ways for cooperation with international society. Still, criticisms have been raised in China’s humanitarian assistance with Chinese characters, covering the foreign aid policy of China. However, the international society welcomes the efforts of China to engage in the common efforts of humanitarian assistance and expects more coordination and harmonization of humanitarian assistance. By the strong support of the UN and OECD, the harmonized efforts for the collective outcomes and innovative financing for humanitarian assistance have been emphasized. Analyzing the features of China’s humanitarian aid, this article concludes with the suggestions and the recommendations as follows. As a responsible rising power, it is highly expected for the Chinese government to actively engage in international humanitarian assistance in accordance with the agreed guidelines of international society. In line with its own strategic preparedness in the establishment of the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and emphasis on international cooperation, this article suggests more coordinated efforts, especially in the form of trilateral cooperation in the end.","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131959131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While finding meaningful political power in the diverse and contentious American society has been a slow process, Korean Americans have found much more success in the interstitial political space of globalization and transnationalism. Within the past two decades, Korean Americans have been wooed by the South Korean government and the U.S. Departments of State and Commerce for various political and policy objectives. More specifically, this paper examines three specific laws and policies that demonstrate this transpacific turn in Korean American politics: 1) Overseas Korean Act (1999); 2) Visa Waiver Program (2008); and 3) Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement (2012). This shift in the political orientation of Korean Americans signals the increasing importance of transnational dynamics in ethnic political","PeriodicalId":252739,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132292855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
