The prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Sleman Regency is higher than the provincial average and occupies the second position in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY) or Special Region of Yogyakarta. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus 3.1% and central obesity is 29.8%. Health cadres have routinely carried out posyandu activities but have a role in preventing the risk of degenerative diseases which have not gone well. Research methods conducted with quasi-experimental one group pre-test and post-test designs on health cadres who were given counseling, tutorial, and discussions. The post test material was the cadre's knowledge before counseling and discussion were held. The measurement results are analyzed using quantitatif and pair t test analysis. The results of material delivery did not have a significant effect on the increase in knowledge of degenerative diseases p = 0.225 known from the pre-test (4.3 ± 1.6) and post-test (4.8 ± 1.4) with an increase in the mean of 0.4. Although statistically does not show significance, there is an increase in the value between pre and post test. There is an increase in the average knowledge before and after counseling.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129870663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The majority of drug users are adolescents with age ranging from 13 - 17 years old at which abuse can affect body composition. Considering the role of the younger generation as the nation's successors, it sparks the urgency to alleviate this negative behavior. One of the measures that can be done is by shifting the negative activities to positive ones such as sports. In order to do this, it is necessary to identify the performance characteristics of the youths to maximize their potential. This study aimed to find out the performance characteristics of the younger generation in Ngablak Village and their association with drug abuse. A total of 50 youth members in Ngablak Village, Ngablak Subdistrict, Magelang Regency were examined for anthropometry, physical (pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, temperature), and somatotype associated with performance. Identification of subjects involved in alcohol and drug abuse was carried out using a questionnaire. The results are displayed descriptively. Statistical analyses (t-test or Mann Whitney U test) were used to compare performance characteristics between groups. Age of subjects ranged from 9 - 19 years and 50% were male. A total of 13 boys and 2 girls consumed alcohol. The results of physical examination showed all subjects in the normal range. The average age, height, and weight of male subjects who comsumed alcohol were higher than those who did not (p < 0,05). There was no difference in somatotype between adolescents who consumed alcohol and those who did not. The body type of male subjects based on measurements was the ideal type, whereas the female subjects had endo-mesomorphic body type. The tendency of consuming alcohol does not cause differences in body type in adolescents, both in male and female.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115574111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cognitive function is related to a person's lifestyle such as physical activity. Physical activity can increase brain nerve growth and affect cognitive function in elderly. However, the majority of the elderly choose sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary is a lifestyle by applying behavior when sitting, leaning back, and lying down which is done starting from waking up to the night before going to sleep continuously. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between sedentary lifestyle and cognitive function among the elderly at UPT PSTW Jember. A cross-sectional design was conducted among 84 elderly at UPT PSTW Jember by using convenience sampling. A questionnaire was used to identify the sociodemography of participants while the data of sedentary lifestyle was obtained by using Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and the data of cognitive function was taken using Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE). Spearman rank test was performed to answer the purpose of this study. Among 84 participants, it is shown that elderly are sedentary for 405 minutes/day, which are less than standard score (Ƶ = 1.377; p = 0.045). The cognitive function score of elderly is 27 which are greater than the standard score (Ƶ = 1.401; p = 0.040), so that the elderly has normal cognitive function. According to the result of the study, the sedentary lifestyle is related to cognitive function, the shorter duration of sedentary lifestyle, the cognitive function increases (r = -0.470; p < 0.001). Therefore, planned intervention is to make schedule routine physical activity and aerobic exercise to maintain cognitive function in elderly.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116503374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This disease is one of several indicators that have been targeted by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015 to become Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In malaria-endemic areas such as in Kokap, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, reported malaria cases declined in 2000 with no case, but increased in 2011 following by some outbreaks in 2012. Future outbreaks could be avoided when health personnel including Primary Health Care (PHC) microscopists and entomologist surveyors were equipped with adequate trainings related to malaria. This training also be used for refreshment for existing personnel to support elimination at the Kokap I, Kokap II, and several nearby PHCs. In October 2013, the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada carried out microscopic training and basic entomology related to malaria in the working area of PHC in Kokap. Training methods were giving material and direct activities in the field. The training provided basic entomology training, malaria microscopic training and malaria vector mapping using a Global Positioning System (GPS). The training facilitated PHC personnel to do correct identification of Plasmodium species, identification of old and new vector breeding sites, and found out how to map vector distribution and malaria cases in their area. The results showed that there was an increase in knowledge from PHC personnel who participated in the pre-test and post-test. From field activity, three adult mosquitoes species were found i.e. Anopheles vagus, An. annularis and An. maculatus. Nulliparous and parous mosquitoes from adult mosquito based on the examination of their tracheole skeins of ovarium were found from the collected mosquitoes although oocyst in midgut and sporozoite in salivary gland were not found during adult mosquito surgical. Similar trainings were expected to be applied in other similar areas in the future.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129509871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To help in post-emergency rehabilitation, Gadjah Mada University sent a Kuliah Kerja Nyata – Peduli Bencana (KKN-PB) team to Agats, Asmat in March 17 – April 20, 2018. As part of situation analysis, the team surveyed the nutritional status of under five-years-old children in Agats, Asmat. The subjects were under five-year-old children coming to posyandus in fiveareasin Agats in March-April 2018. The data of sex, age, weight, and height were obtained, then the nutritional status in the form of Z-scores for weight-for-age (WAZ), height-for-age (HAZ), and weight-for-height (WHZ) was calculated using WHO Anthro version 3.2.2 software. Nutritional status was determined based on criteria from World Health Organization (WHO). Among the 372 children, 35 (9.4%) children were underweight and 7 (1.9%) were severely underweight. Twenty one (5.7%) children were stunted and 12 (3.2%) were severely stunted. As many as 23 (6.2%) children were found to be wasted and 6 (1.6%) were severely wasted. The percentages of children with malnutrition found in this survey were lower than the percentages for Indonesia and Papua overall, but percentages in two posyandus were higher than the national and Papua percentages. The relatively low total percentages may be accounted for by concentration of malnutrition cases in districts other than Agats and lack of coverage of children absent from posyandu. Prevalence of malnutrition varied in different age groups possibly due to inadequacy of complementary foods, changes in incidence of infections, and addition of siblings. Further surveys are needed using home visitsthat will also enable to analyze of socioeconomic factors at the same time as nutritional status determinants in Agats and other districts in Asmat.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116028406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examining those markers in adolescent age is essential in order to develop the optimum physical characteristics for the future. This study was conducted to identify the nutrition status based on anthropometry value, somatotype, food and fluid intake of youth athletic athletes in Indonesia. Descriptive quantitative design was used in this study. Subjects participated in the study were 25 youth athletic athletes from Students Education and Training Program (Program Pembinaan dan Pelatihan Pelajar) in Yogyakarta and Aceh, and School of Sports (Sekolah Keolahragaan) Ragunan, Jakarta Selatan. Anthropometry measurement consists of body weight, height, body fat percentage, and somatotype. Nutrition status was identified according to BMI/age and height/age. Food and fluid intake were assessed using 24-hour dietary recall interview and semi quantitative fluid frequency questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed and the result was presented in mean and deviation standard. BMI/age values in male and female athletes were -2 SD ≤ Z ≥ +1 SD (normal) and +1 SD ≤ Z ≥ +2 SD (overweight), respectively. Height/age value for both gender was normal in -2 SD ≤ Z ≥ +2 SD. Percentage of body fat ranged in 12-16% for males and 18-28% for females. Somatotype category for males was ectomorphic mesomorph (2.3-5.0-3.3) and endomorphic mesomorph (4.4-5.6-2.0) for females. Fulfillment of energy and carbohydrate was found inadequate (< 80%), whereas fat intake was found excess (> 110%). Total fluid intake was ranged from 2700 ml to 5800 ml per day. Overweight nutrition status was still found in female athletes. Ideal somatotype was found only in male athletes. Excessive percentage of body fat was detected in both gender. Total energy, macro nutrients, micro nutrients, and fluid intake were inadequate compared to dietary recommendation.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133197299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its strategic location by the seashore also poses an opportunity for Kanigoro to become a center for local home-based culinary industries focusing on local fish, such as fish nuggets and floss (shredded meat), which are rich sources of animal protein. Despite the plentiful local protein sources, a high prevalence of stunting continues to plague Kanigoro Village, reaching up to 48.2%. Developing fish-based culinary industries may become a means to reduce the stunting rates as well as to improve the economic status of the villagers. This project aimed to develop the fish-based local food processing into nuggets and floss to improve family economies and nutritional status in Kanigoro Village through a community-based approach. It began with the sharing of the project plan to gain support from the community. The team collaborated with local Kanigoro organizations, namely posyandu cadres and women's group. The training was given to the women's group on marketing, such as providing nutritional information on the packages, developing attractive packaging, and introducing marketing niches. Posyandu cadres were trained to motivate the villagers to increase fish consumption. After the training, the groups conducted meetings with the local women under the supervision of the team. In the meeting sessions, they encouraged villagers to eat more fish. Through the training, the local women acquired new knowledge on product enhancement, starting from improved processing hygiene, upgraded packaging, provision of nutritional information, and innovative marketing ventures. In the gatherings, posyandu cadres were able to deliver motivation to augment fish consumption. They could measure the height and weight of children under five correctly, enabling them to identify children with stunting. The knowledge and skills acquired from this project will equip the local villagers to prevent and reduce stunting prevalence in Kanigoro Village.","PeriodicalId":251344,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Community Empowerment for Health","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129355062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Mount Merapi eruption had a major impact on the lives of the people living nearby. Many livelihoods came to a halt, forcing some people to work as sand miners until late at night. As a result, children receive less time and attention from their mothers. The combination of traumatic events and unsuitable parenting increase the tendency for depression, a grave health problem in children. Lack of awareness among parents and teachers can cause a delay in the detection and treatment of depression in children, which will negatively affect the children’s school performance and future. This community service and research project held a training on childhood depression. Twelve teachers, 55 parents, and 55 students from Kuncup Mekar Kindergarten and Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal (ABA) Kindergarten, Cangkringan, Sleman participated in the training. The training included early detection of childhood depression, game modules based on traditional games, game equipment, and the Child Depression Inventory (CDI). The output of the training was evaluated by comparing pre-test and post-test results, as well as interviews. The tendency of depression in the participating children before and after training was assessed using CDI. After the training, the average level of knowledge on early detection and prevention of depression in children increased from 33.7 to 68.0, while the average skill level in playing traditional games increased from 43.9 to 85.2. The number of students with depression tendencies declined from 37 children (67%) to 16 (39%). This is not only associated with increased risk for obesity in later life but also increased the risk for cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases. Therefore an effective and integrated obesity prevention program is highly warranted. There are several community-based programs for obesity prevention that have been developed in the past few decades and school-based activity is one of the potential programs that could be implemented in the Indonesian setting. School is a strategic location for obesity prevention programs in the adolescents because school is the place where most of the adolescents spending their time outside their home. In addition, a school also a centralized community where health and nutrition promotion programs can be done at the same time. In 2012, the Indonesian Ministry of Health published a guidebook on the prevention and treatment of adolescents with obesity at school. However, this guideline only focusing on the role of health workers at puskesmas level and not detailing the role of the school in managing obesity prevention program.
