In the Axiomatic Design theory, only the functional requirements (systems' functions) are considered in the design process, since the mapping between requirements and design parameters in Axiomatic Design does not include non-functional requirements (systems' attributes). This paper introduce an extended view of system design process based on Axiomatic Design Theory framework to incorporate the non-functional requirements into the mapping between the problem domain and the solution domain. A systematic way of including the non-functional requirements in the design process is presented and an extended design matrix is introduced, which includes the mapping between a complete set of requirements (functional and non-functional) and a corresponding design parameters (physical domain).","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115231814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current projections are showing that without active debris removal (ADR) missions manned and unmanned operations in LEO will become in danger of collisions. While research is being done on removal techniques most approaches involve human pilots and/or are planned for a single use. A more effective solution in the long run would be to have a multi-use crafts that could navigate to rendezvous with multiple targets for de-orbiting. The purpose of this paper is to compare two different types of controllers used on a simulated nonlinear active satellite system to rendezvous with a certain target in orbit. The two types of controllers that are compared are a state feedback controller and a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). Initial conditions are provided to the controller at first in order to ensure each controller works in a variety of start points. Simulations for both controllers are performed to compare operation while attempting to rendezvous with the target location. The simulation results provide details on the different strengths for both types of controllers that could be applied to different missions. One main result of this paper is that the State Feedback controller was able to reach the target location quicker but the FLC had a much smoother approach. Further detail on the results is presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115622201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the position of each leg actuator over time is described by a periodic function with parameters that are determined using the learning automata reinforcement learning algorithm. Analysis of the robot morphology is used to group similar legs and decrease the number of actuator functions that must be determined. MATLAB/Simulink/SimMechanics Toolbox are used to simulate the robot gait. The simulated robot response is evaluated by the reinforcement learning algorithm considering: 1) the robot frontal speed, 2) the “smoothness” of the robot movements, 3) the largest torque required by all leg actuators, and 4) the robot energy consumption. When the reinforcement learning algorithm converges to a good solution, it is applied to the real robot which was built using the Bioloid Comprehensive Kit, an educational robot kit manufactured by ROBOTIS. The responses of the simulated and real robot are then compared and are shown to be similar.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124781663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We stick to the foundations of constructive enumeration to create a complete, traceably correct, and consistent model, but we do first decompose the task into manageable units by input/output dependency analysis. The expected behavior is formalized in temporal logic. The resulting model is a composition of all models, that run in parallel. As time is explicitly considered during the creation of the model, timing information is available for structured testing of non functional, e.g. real time requirements, as well as for the determination of measures and dependability estimators. By this approach, the subsequent activities for quality assurance, such as validation and verification, measurement of coverage criteria, and dependability estimators, e.g. of reliability, safety, and risk, profit from this approach, as they rely on a provably correct basis. We applied the method to an embedded system of a German automotive OEM, that was designed in Matlab Simulink and architectured with AUTOSAR 3.2 methodology. An existing test suite was at hand, that was created with the established method. This existing test suite served as benchmark to assess the quality of the new test suite, derived from the model. We compared the reachability of the test cases inside the implementation with code coverage measures and examined the variance of use imposed by the test suites. We present the promising results in this paper.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129629278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These signals are detected using electroencephalography (EEG) devices. Research in this field aims to enable victims of `locked-in syndrome' as a result of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal injury, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, or multiple sclerosis. BMI systems also increase diversity in human computer interaction methods. One of the BMI target signals, known as the P300, is an involuntary reaction to a desired visual stimulus. BMI systems capable of detecting P300 signals allow direct brain-device interaction, without the need for muscle excitation. Because EEG P300 signal suffers low signal to noise ratios, classification of user intent can be difficult. Typically P300 systems use repeated visually evoked potentials (VEPs) to increase classifier accuracy; however this results in lower information transfer rates. To improve single-trial P300 detection we use a genetic algorithm (GA) in combination with both a neural network and linear discriminant analysis classifiers. The GA improved feature selection for training the classifiers. We explore the results of those features found influential on P300 classification and suggest direction for future research in single-trial P300 detection.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124692506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To realize highly interactive and responsive applications, touch display constantly scans touch input signals at high frequency, thus wasting energy. However, it is challenging to optimize the touch scan frequency due the highly unpredictable nature of human-touch interactions. In this work, we propose an adaptive touch sampling frequency scaling algorithm based on users' touch behavior, to improve touch devices' energy efficiency while improving user experience. We implemented the proposed algorithm to demonstrate its efficacy for mobile tablet platforms, and our evaluation results show that our proposed adaptive touch scan algorithm reduces touch power consumption by up to 44% compared to the conventional fixed scan rate algorithm, while enhancing user experience when needed.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117058309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The number of sensors deployed world-wide increases very rapidly. The Internet of Things, amongst others, generates vast amounts of data of many different data types. How data are used is essential to improve user experience and efficiencies of the systems in which they occur. We explain how familiar concepts of Process Mining strengthen generalised sensor context services. We present a laboratory case to explain the approach. By way of a real-world example, we confirm the viability of using Process Mining to strengthen context-aware computing.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126534911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we present a method for automatic generation of fuzzy rules from data. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to perform data clustering without the requirement of predefining any parameters including number of clusters. The proposed method creates data clusters at different levels of granulation and selects the best clustering results based on some measures. The proposed method involves merging clusters into new clusters that have a coarser granulation. To evaluate performance of the proposed method, three different datasets are used to compare performance of the proposed method to other classifiers: SVM classifier, FCM fuzzy classifier, subtractive clustering fuzzy classifier. Results show that the proposed method has better classification results than other classifiers for all the datasets used.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126093993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, photonics technology is increasingly used in ubiquitous applications such as telecommunication, medicine, avionics and robotics. One of the main critical requirements is to verify the corresponding functional properties of these systems. In this perspective, we identify the most widely used modeling techniques (e.g., transfer matrices, difference equations and block diagrams) for the modeling and analysis of photonic components. Considering the safety and cost critical nature of the application domain, we discuss the potential of using formal methods as a complementary analysis approach. In particular, we propose a framework to formally specify and verify the critical properties of complex photonic systems within the sound core of a higher-order-logic theorem prover. For illustration purposes, we present the formal specification of a microring resonator based photonic filter along with the verification of some important design properties such as spectral power and filtering rejection ratio.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129252754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What is missing is a systems engineering approach and a system of verification and validation based on formal representation and analysis. We propose a systems design methodology for inter-satellite communication based on the Responsive and Formal Design (RFD) [1]-[3], which addresses the need for a model-based system engineering approach coupled with a system of validation and verification based on formal representation and analysis. The goal is to apply the RFD process to provide a solution for the Inter-Satellite Communications (ISC) problem within the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) framework. The OSI represents a standard framework for communication between devices. It divides the communication process into seven layers, with each one providing well-defined functions and services. We will address the integration of the RFD process with the OSI framework for ISC. The RFD process involves levels of design abstraction and refinement which correspond to layers or groups of layers of the OSI model. The process illustrates how the complete framework for ISC unfolds in an iterative manner.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124785188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
