Garbage collection became one of the most important services each city hall offers to protect its inhabitants and the environment from the harmful impact of solid waste. In this paper, we present a prototypical device that measures the filling level of a waste bin using Infrared based sensors. Most of the state-of-the-art market products use ultrasonic sensors, a technology twice as expensive as the one we propose. We created an Internet of Things (IoT) device capable of computing a bins' filling level (< 25%, < 50%, < 75%, > 75%. and estimate the occupied volume inside the container using a set of infrared emitters and receivers. We also report on the results of the experiments with our device in a real world scenario.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129679240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solutions can be opportunistic when looking for parking spaces, which can increase the competing level and in turn, increase the searching time. Considering the parking resource limitations, we need to take vehicular cooperation to a next level by relaxing the constraints of cooperating drivers and so expanding the feasibility of the search space. This paper presents smart parking model Based on a Cooperative System; a Reward System that allows better use of resources especially during peak hours, by relaxing the constraints of cooperating drivers and so contributing to parking assignment efficiency increase. Subscribed drivers in the Reward System will be able to manage their delays induced by the traffic, since a readjustment of the parking space allocation it will be made dynamically by the system, based on the driver remaining travel time to his destination. In order to work with large-scale parking optimization, a real case mobility scenario is simulated using a SUMO/MATLAB framework. Based on simulation results, compared with non-cooperative parking processes, our model reduces the average parking rate failure and the traveling cost, whereas the overall parking capacity is more efficiently utilized.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"37 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120873263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For that reason, the distance that a signal can travel without losing or corrupting information is limited. Therefore, it is necessary to regenerate the signals periodically using regenerators. Given an optical network, the regenerator location problem tries to install a subset of regenerators with the minimum possible cost, in a way that each pair of nodes can communicate with each other. In this paper, two swarm optimisation algorithms: Ant Colony Optimisation and Bees Algorithm are used to solve this problem. We compare our results with other algorithms used in literature to solve the same problem. Simulation results obtained using 480 different instances prove their efficiency in solving the regenerator location problem.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121052537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the production of biodiesel and biolubricants could be interesting, as it is based on renewable sources such as seed or fried used oils. For this reason, the use of vegetable oils could be important for the design of biorefineries, where many by-products could also be reused in the same biorefinery. The aim of this research work was to study the production of biodiesel and, especially, biolubricants from different raw materials (with the subsequent characterization), paying attention to their characteristics and their possible suitability for their production in a biorefinery. This way, optimum chemical conditions were used to carry out the transesterification of biodiesel and biolubricants. Concerning the production, high yields were obtained in all cases. Some characteristics were studied, such as fatty acid methyl ester profile, viscosity and oxidative stability, among others. Biodiesel products complied with the standards, concerning the main characteristics covered in this research work. Regarding biolubricants, in general, viscosity values were similar to those found in the literature, but longer induction points were found. In that sense, these parameters were highly influenced by the fatty acid profile of the raw material, which is important for both biodiesel and biolubricant performance. Therefore, the initial characterization of vegetable oils is important for the design of biorefineries.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125238093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IoT Pollution Project is exploring how IoT concepts can be applied with smart systems to detect pollution in real-time. Using a network of Raspberry Pi prototypes, the project aims to measure heavily populated areas around the City of Tacoma, while building a real-time interface measuring current air quality. The project also explores the use of edge computing as an alternative to cloud computing. The vast expansion of IoT devices poses threats to the infrastructure of cloud computing as more devices process and store data to the cloud. The project demonstrates how edge devices can alleviate the work done on the cloud by calculating rolling averages over a time interval on the edge device and then deploying the data to the cloud. The project uses Microsoft Azure Framework, IoT concepts and edge computing concepts to build the project architecture.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124153787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mismatch that may exist between energy availability and the energy consumption is one of the main barriers to higher dissemination of renewable generation for cases like Porto Santo island. Being able to deal with the variation of renewable sources may be challenging especially if demand varies in the opposite direction. Demand-side management techniques are one of the tools that may be used for dealing with such mismatch, thus facilitating the accommodation of higher renewable electricity, and at the same time allowing a more efficient operation of the power system. This is even more critical in scenarios in which there are no endogenous resources and the existing power system is based on small size thermal power plants. The proposed approach for managing the desalination plant shows a reduction in the maximum electricity demand on the island and a smoother diagram allowing a more predictable operation of conventional generators. It proves that the option of employing the desalination plant as a flexible demand/load is beneficial for managing the electric power grid of Porto Santo island.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125908195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This pattern is considered to be a marker of sleep instability and can be used for the assessment of sleep quality. However, in manual scoring, each one second epoch of the signal is considered to be a monotonous and time-consuming task that is propitious to produce errors. Therefore, an automatic scoring algorithm is desired. The developed method uses an electroencephalogram monopolar deviation signal as input to a long short-term memory neural network to estimate the CAP phases, without the need to handcraft features. This information was then fed to a finite state machine to determine the CAP cycles occurrence. Multiple configurations of the neural network were tested and the best accuracy for the CAP phase estimation was 70%, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.663. Regarding the CAP cycles detection the best accuracy was 68% with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.703. These values are in the range of what is considered to be the mutual agreement between two clinicians, analyzing the same signals. Therefore, the developed method could possibly be employed for clinical analysis.","PeriodicalId":250863,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference in Engineering Applications (ICEA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129251655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
