It has been instrumental in modeling safety and reliability problems in which failure simply is not an option. Aerospace and nuclear industries, several universities, government agencies and software developers have played a large role in the development of FTA. As a result, practical and widely applicable mathematical tools have been established using reasonably common terminology and computer applications. This paper focuses on the fault tree display itself, and on improvements that add significant benefits to it.","PeriodicalId":250838,"journal":{"name":"Journal of System Safety","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124938961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the key technical challenges are how to confidently demonstrate the safety of a self-driving vehicle when the number of permutations of operating conditions, scenarios, system inputs, etc. are complex, uncertain and potentially limitless. This paper provides a broad survey of the various types of uncertainty in the development of self-driving vehicles and outlines several possible strategies for handling uncertainty. Advantages and challenges of different approaches, including qualitative and quantitative methods, are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":250838,"journal":{"name":"Journal of System Safety","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128459296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, several frameworks have gained prominence as approved methods and formal techniques to model systems. MBSE technology continues to gain popularity within the systems engineering domain, especially in markets of complex systems. To remain relevant within the context of concurrent engineering, it is advantageous for system safety engineers to learn how these techniques are affecting system design so that safety is addressed within system development. This paper provides an overview of MBSE in theory and practice, and provides high-level details on how the system safety engineer can use these methods for optimum impact in affecting safety design.","PeriodicalId":250838,"journal":{"name":"Journal of System Safety","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127231327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, while the overall economy has slowly recovered and government budgets are largely restored, our membership has remained flat or has slowly declined from year to year.","PeriodicalId":250838,"journal":{"name":"Journal of System Safety","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129453139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Cost, Schedule and Safety Benefits of Early System Safety Involvement","authors":"J. Hewitt, D. Foito","doi":"10.56094/jss.v55i1.56","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56094/jss.v55i1.56","url":null,"abstract":"System safety engineering is the application of engineering and management principles, criteria and techniques to achieve acceptable mishap risks. System safety typically reduces mishap risks through analyses that identify and address potential system failure modes. Studies indicate that when system safety is involved early in the product lifecycle, schedule slippage and cost escalation resulting from design changes can be substantially reduced. Development programs often face the dilemma of whether to apply funding to perform thorough, intensive system safety analyses in the conceptual design phase or wait until later, when designs are more complete, parts are being manufactured or testing is underway. Performing the analyses earlier consumes funds that might be needed later, while performing the analyses later increases the likelihood of expensive and time-consuming redesigns. This paper provides examples that encourage involving system safety engineering earlier in the process, by demonstrating the cost and schedule advantages, as well as the expected safety risk reduction. In addition, involving system safety earlier permits corrective actions to be implemented at a higher level in the system safety order of design precedence, which increases the effectiveness of corrective actions and reduces residual risk.","PeriodicalId":250838,"journal":{"name":"Journal of System Safety","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126008800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
