The objective of this paper is to use an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), along with a commercial acoustic sensor to measure and classify the different types of arcing on outdoor insulators. Experiments were performed, where both corona and dry band arcing were generated under lab test conditions which mimicked reality as closely as possible. The sound produced by corona, dry band arcing and acoustic noise was recorded using a commercial acoustic sensor. The problem of detecting corona, dry band arcing, or noise constituted a three-class pattern recognition problem, which is considered in this paper. The acquired acoustic signal was transferred to a low frequency signal using an envelope detection technique. Both the 100 and 150 Hz components of the envelope were used as input feature vectors for the developed ANN. Results show an average of around 90% success rate in classifying the measured acoustic signals.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"35 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133424649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Joints are subjected to high electric and thermal stress, the former depending on the cable itself, while the latter is a consequence of ohmic losses in a conductor due to load current and leakage current flowing through the layers of the insulation. This coactive effect might cause the cable joint to undergo thermal/electrical breakdown at some point. Hence the estimation of Electric fields at maximum thermal voltage of cable joint/multilayer dielectrics in general, is of quite significant importance. Current continuity equation, heat flux equation and Poisson's equation along with appropriate boundary conditions were simultaneously solved at various current densities by finite difference method and voltage versus current density is plotted. The peak value of voltage, after which the solution of temperature goes haywire is the Thermal Maximum Voltage and electric field distribution and temperature distribution at that voltage/current density are investigated.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127863835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Random location of sensors will yield an incorrect measurement of temperature profile inside the greenhouse. In addition, it will unnecessarily increase the number of sensors and the complexity of the wireless sensor network. In this paper, two approaches namely equal sensor spacing method and trial and error method for the selection of number and locations of sensors in a greenhouse have been proposed successfully investigated. In the equal sensor spacing method, the percentage error reduces from 1.3354% to 0.1559% as the number of sensors is increased from 3 to 10. Although the error corresponding to ten sensors is quite small, the large number of sensors would make the temperature measurement system very expensive. In case of trial and error method the least %error comes out to be 0.0658% corresponding to just five sensors placed at 1.0 m, 7.0 m, 11.0 m, 15.0 m and 19 m from the door. It is further observed that for this approach, increasing the number of sensors does not necessarily reduce the %error. Thus an optimal number of sensors at optimized locations result from this approach. It can be used for any temperature profile and applied along both the dimensions i.e. length and breadth of greenhouse.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133178765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The residual life of CIP of the oil-immerged power transformer is determined by detecting the content of dissolved carbon oxide and 2-FAL gases in oil. The proposed work employs Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), which offers preeminent response for calculating extent of degradation of the CIP. Using the FIS the final condition of CIP is categorized as AI (Acceptable Insulation), MD (Moderate Deterioration), ED (Extensive Deterioration) and UR (Urgent Replacement) from correlation between accumulated values of 2-FAL, CO and CO2 with DP. Furthermore, the best fuzzy membership function has been obtained for the experimental test condition. Finally the results obtained shows that the proposed method accurately monitors the condition of CIP in the oil-immerged power transformers.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129978345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis of the response of PD signal occurring inside a transformer winding forms an integral part of the insulation diagnostic that requires to compute the voltages and currents at various nodes of the equivalent electrical network. In this context, a generalized state-space algorithm to compute the response of PD signal for an N-section mutually coupled ladder network of a transformer winding including losses is presented. Two distinct algorithms are demonstrated considering PD occurring at across and along the winding sections, respectively. The response of the PD signal is measured as the current response at the winding neutral terminal. To study the PD patterns in time and frequency domain, simulation results are obtained for a typical six-section ladder network of a transformer winding.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116798726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This hybrid technique find the optimum network reconfiguration to minimize the real power losses along with voltage profile improvement A novel hybrid (heuristic and meta-heuristic) technique is used for finding out the optimal configuration for a network. This technique is compared with Selective particle swarm optimization (SPSO) and Artificial Immune System optimization (AIS). The meta-heuristic technique (AIS) generates the initial topologies of the distribution and the branch exchange method helps in improving the chromosomes generated by the AIS. The major factor to characterize the capability of a hybrid algorithm with other meta-heuristic algorithms network and heuristic technique (branch exchange) is the effective run time. The effectiveness of the all approaches is used with IEEE 16, 33 and 69-bus test systems with invigorate results.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128920311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to such demand, electric vehicle using an inverter fed motor is developed and it used widely. However, partial discharge is generated in motor winding, when the higher voltage is applied to the windings. Thereby, it may induce a fatal breakdown in the insulating coating of the windings. Judging from a published report, it is said that a decrease of partial discharge inception voltage(PDIV) is related with space charge accumulation in the insulating coating. However, only few studies about the space charge accumulation characteristic in the insulating coating of the windings has been carried out in the past. In this study, we tried to apply a new space charge distribution measurement using Pulsed Electro-Acoustic(PEA) method to evaluate the insulating characteristics in such layers. In this measurement, the space charge distribution is measured with a square wave or a AC voltage with a contain frequency. By performing the measurement, we tried to analyze the mechanism of the space charge accumulation in polyamide-imide(PAI) film with applying the square wave and AC voltages. Also, we tried to investigate the influence of application of the square wave and AC voltage on insulation lifetime of PAI film. From the measurement results, it was found that the square wave voltage application was much affected to the PAI film degradation than the application of AC voltage.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116502423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Protection systems currently used for HVDC line protection need further improvement in terms of sensitivity, speed and reliability. This paper presents a study of the response of HVDC system on occurrence of faults at different locations along the length of the line. The response has been analyzed in terms of change in voltage, current, power, impedance and transient energy measured at both the ends of the line. The study has been done by simulating a 500 kV LCC based monopolar HVDC system using PSCAD/EMTDC. Critical analysis of these variables shows that the changes in current, power and transient energy measured at the two ends of the dc transmission line are well suited as fault discriminators for unit protection of monopolar HVDC transmission system.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116576814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Railgap switches are being utilized in synchronous mode to transfer energy from high energy capacitor modules. The Railgap switches are operated in multichannel mode that enables large charge transfer in distributed mode with minimum switch inductance. Multichannel operation helps in achieving lower jitter and conduction delay along with minimum electrode erosion that is essential for the synchronized operation of switches. The initiation of several simultaneous arc channels along the electrode length in Railgap switch has a strong dependency on the gap voltage and rate at which the electric field changes within the gap. High trigger voltage and fast rate of rise (dV/dt >5kV/ns) are essential for existing Railgap switches for functioning in multichannel mode. Temporal characteristics of trigger pulse deteriorate when multiple Railgap switches are connected in parallel due to capacitive loading. To avoid the problem of capacitive loading, coaxial cable based pulse generator is designed and developed for synchronized, multi-channel discharge of all four modules. At 30kV of primary charging, the pulse generator produces around 60kV output pulse of 100ns duration (FWHM) with a rise time of better than 10ns (10%–90%) that correspond to dV/dt of >5kV/ns. At a charging voltage of 15kV, peak current of ∼1.3MA has been delivered to load.","PeriodicalId":250717,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116589499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
