Wireless powered RFID tags with UWB transmitter transmit wideband pulses to readers, allowing high accurate Time-of-Arrival (TOA) estimation. Low power low complexity TOA estimations using energy detection receiver are investigated. Max Energy Select (MES), Threshold Comparison (TC), and MES-Search-Back (MES-SB) algorithms are evaluated and analyzed. As a special focus, a prototype of the proposed energy detection receiver is designed and implemented. It consists of a 3.1–4.8GHz IR-UWB analog frontend with high speed digital circuits in 90nm CMOS, and a flexible back-end with a TOA estimator on FPGA.","PeriodicalId":249652,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129297485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The detector architecture is based on a squarer circuit realized with MOS transistors biased in the sub-threshold region. The squared signal is integrated using a low pass amplifier that allows the receiver gain to be optimized. A comparator with a tunable threshold is then used as a decision circuit. Experimental results show that a BER of 10− is achieved for a peak-to-peak voltage of 140 mV at the detector input at 200 Mb/s data rate. Assuming that the detector is driven by a LNA of gain 22 dB, leads to a receiver sensitivity of −45 dBm. The receiver dissipates only 25 mW, corresponding to an energy efficiency of 0.13 nJ/bit and the chip occupies 0.7 mm2.","PeriodicalId":249652,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122729575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An inherently glitch-free phase-switching prescaler is realized by the adoption of a reverse switching sequence without any additional complicated circuit. A simplified model of the source coupled logic (SCL) structure is proposed to optimize the power of the divide-by-2 divider. Followed by the first divide-by-2 stage, a synchronous divide-by-4 stage is used to generate eight 45°-spaced signal, which further decreases the operating frequency and the phase sequence is determined. Fabricated with SMIC 0.18µm CMOS technology, the proposed prescaler can operate from 2.8GHz to 5.8GHz while consuming 6.5mA (including test buffers) from a 1.8V voltage. Various techniques were suggested to handle this issue such as power control, antenna, time and frequency diversity etc. However, antenna diversity is considered to be the most practical way to handle multipath fading. In this paper, a deterministic UWB channel model was developed based on ray-tracing technique using the art of 3D computer game technology. Reflection, refraction and scattering phenomena were successfully implemented. The model was then enhanced to use multiple antennas on both sides of the system. Simulation results show great improvement in channel impulse response (CIR) in case of multiple antennas. Moreover, the frequency effect on channel impulse response was analyzed for 500 MHz–4 GHz range. Our results indicate that the change in frequency does not affect the channel behaviour a lot but changes the pattern of received rays.","PeriodicalId":249652,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131706642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
