The maximum PV capacity that can be integrated without incurring any grid impacts is referred to as the PV hosting capacity of the grid. Integrating more PV than the hosting capacity mandates grid upgrades and additional investments. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the PV hosting capacity of the distribution grid with zero or minimum cost of PV integration in the grid. Using a stochastic analysis framework and quasistatic load flow simulations, the impacts of high PV penetration on the distribution grid are evaluated. The analysis includes the effectiveness of existing voltage regulation equipment namely load tap-changing (LTC) transformer and capacitors in eliminating the steady-state problems such as feeder overvoltages and voltage deviations. The study is carried out on three distribution circuits, and the results indicate that the hosting capacity of the circuits can be increased significantly while incurring a minimal cost to the grid.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133481634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, with decreasing time intervals and increasing complexities introduced by market policies and stochastic inputs, the need for further improvements in speed and performance of OPF algorithms persists. This paper proposes using elitist real genetic algorithm (ERGA) and opposition-based elitist real genetic algorithm (OB-ERGA) to solve the OPF problem. Also, inverse transformation and exponential transformation are implemented to investigate the convergence performance of the proposed methods. The combination of the OB-ERGA, ERGA and the fitness functions is tested on the IEEE 30-bus system to determine the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. The results are presented and compared with the existing evolutionary algorithms in the literature.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"22 6S 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133232792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accurate secondary models are also needed to fully leverage the measurement data received from smart meters and distributed energy resources at the customer premises. This paper discusses approaches for creating distribution system secondary low-voltage circuit models utilizing smart meter measurements. This paper also discusses methods to model secondary circuits when the loads and distributed energy resources are only partially metered. The presented methods are demonstrated on a real distribution secondary circuit with smart meter measurements and transformer low voltage measurements. Practical challenges related to real measurement data are discussed.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"1990 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125507026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, controllable “electrical heating with thermal storage/accumulators” is used as the peak regulation and dispatch resource. The purpose of this paper is: to reduce the forced electricity output of combined head and power (CHP) units; to get a lower load peak and a higher load valley when it is hard to regulate the peak; to increase the wind power penetration in winter; and to form a load dispatch model featuring source-load coordination. To conduct an in-depth study of thermoelectric coupling of CHP units, we created a thermoelectric decoupling scheme wherein the thermal power loss is compensated by wind power-thermal storage system. An economic dispatch model was proposed. Case studies showed that the proposed dispatch scheme using “electric boilers with heat accumulators” enables the grid to accommodate more wind power and optimize economic targets. Therefore, the proposed scheme should be widely applied.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117038265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research examines the robustness of the novel PSS in the synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus (SMIB) system under multiple operation conditions. After deriving the state space matrices of the linear model of the system, the gains of robust PSS are estimated using Lyapunov function in the linear matrix inequality (LMI). The model analyzed in this paper is an electromagnetic model with automatic voltage regulator (EMT+AVR). Then, EMT+AVR model with the robust PSS is analyzed and compared with the conventional PSS. In the simulation part, the nonlinear simulation is conducted in MATLAB/Simulink to compare the conventional PSS and novel PSS.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124430160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the operating characteristics of DFIG, this paper proposes a novel power control strategy based on coordinating over-speed control and pitch control. The coordination strategy can effectively control the output power of DFIG at all wind speed regions by pitch control. And it stores abandoned wind energy by taking the full advantage of the turbine's rotational inertia under medium and low wind speed conditions in order to improve the power generation efficiency of DFIG and optimize the operation conditions of the pitch actuator. Simulation results show that the novel power control strategy can effectively limit output active power of turbine to the reference value, reduce power fluctuations under random wind variations, and realize the load shedding operation of DFIG so as to provide power reserve.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132563946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To that end a reduced order 16-machine 5-area dynamic equivalent model of the New England-New York power system with replacement of one existing synchronous generator and a power system stabilizer (PSS) by a DFIG-based wind farm (WF) is considered. The problem with electromechanical oscillation damping control through WFs using locally available signals is identified and a systematic approach for selection of control input and remote feedback signals through modal analysis is presented. The remote feedback signals sent through communication channels encounter data dropout which is represented by the Gilbert-Elliott model. Moreover, an expression for the bound on the error norm between the actual and the estimated states relating data dropout and model mismatch is also derived. Nonlinear time-domain simulations demonstrate that the ORC gives significantly better performance compared to the conventional feedback under higher data drop situations.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116926450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
