The term renewable energy will be used to describe systems that do not depend on the burning of hydrocarbon based fuels to produce electricity. Greenhouse gasses will be used to describe emissions like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, and methane common to the burning or manufacture of hydrocarbon based compounds. Utility grid, will describe publicly available electricity which typically has a high greenhouse gas emission per watt-hour energy generated.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"317 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115833596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previously, authors proposed an order-recursive lattice algorithm to estimate an auto-regressive (AR) model, thereby the inter-area modes. The statistics of estimates are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper, new research for direct estimation of the variance of the mode frequency/damping for such a model is presented. It estimates the covariance of the reflection coefficients by using the matrix of all AR polynomials to diagonalize the sample correlation matrix. The covariance matrix of the reflection coefficients is related to that of the AR polynomial and then to that of frequency and damping estimates. Preliminary results using Monte Carlo simulations of power system models are presented. It is demonstrated that on an average, estimated variance compares well with the population variance and hence provides a good metric of the statistical error.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123895457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To that end, a widely used model reduction technique called Balanced Truncation (BT) is compared with a relatively new moment matching approach known as the Iterative Rational Krylov Algorithm (IRKA). It is demonstrated that both BT and IRKA can produce an acceptable accuracy during model reduction for power grids with synchronous generators whereas IRKA produces better accuracy when Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-based wind generation is considered.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"270 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124370513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extensive use of these switching devices based power converters lead to injection of large amount of harmonics in the grid. This paper proposes design and simulation of six winding transformer for 36-pulse rectifier unit and selection of suitable phase-shifting of these windings to reduce total harmonic distortion (THD). The concept of extended delta winding has also been proposed in this paper which will be used for design of multi-winding transformer to suppress harmonics from input grid current. In addition, the consequences of selection of improper turns ratio of windings due to constructional limitations is also discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122063967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The holomorphic embedding method (HEM) is a recursive, not iterative, method which uses the no-load condition as its starting points and is theoretically guaranteed to converge to the operable, high-voltage (HV) solution if one exists. The HEM method uses Padé approximant as a means of analytic continuation and is capable of finding the HV solution up to the saddle node bifurcation point (SNBP). The univariate HEM has been proven to be an efficient tool in experiments. However, a key drawback of the univariate HEM is that it lacks flexibility: the method can calculate the solutions only when the load/generation profile is scaled as a whole. A straightforward improvement is to use a multi-variate HEM combined with multi-variate Padé approximants. This paper presents a bivariate HEM formulation, which uses a corresponding bivariate Padé (Chisholm) approximant. Simulations on a three-bus and a modified IEEE 14-bus system show that the method can yield accurate voltage solutions and accurate values of the SNBPs.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"787 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123283825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, the FD representation of switching functions, as given for example by PWM schemes, requires a large number of samples. The proposed method addresses this issue by using the numerical Laplace transform (NLT) with reduced number of samples. Firstly, the proposed approach identifies high-impact frequencies and discards the rest of frequencies from an obtained FD solution variable. Secondly, it calculates appropriate damping-term of the complex frequency to achieve proper integration along Bromwich contour. To compute the appropriate damping-term, this paper adopts the vector fitting (VF) software tool to localize poles of the truncated system. Two examples are presented to validate the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128668529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed control scheme uses proportional resonant controllers in the 2-phase stationary frame of reference with a zero sequence controller to compensate the voltage distortion under unbalanced loads. It is demonstrated that the proposed control scheme achieves better performance over existing control methods. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the stator voltage is significantly improved over conventional control methods. We create battery cost projections based on a survey of literature cost projections of battery packs and balance of system costs, with a focus on lithium-ion batteries. Low, mid, and high cost trajectories are created for the overnight capital costs and the operating and maintenance costs. We then demonstrate the impact of these cost projections in the Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS) capacity expansion model. We find that under reference scenario conditions, lower battery costs can lead to increased penetration of variable renewable energy, with solar photovoltaics (PV) seeing the largest increase. We also find that additional storage can reduce renewable energy curtailment, although that comes at the expense of additional storage losses.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129000318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do so, this paper proposes a combination of a predictor and a voltage controller to eliminate the delays associated with conventional sample based voltage regulation. Unlike model predictive controllers, the proposed preemptive approach focuses on the input disturbances and does not neglect them as zero mean wiener processes. Additionally, due to the utilization of input predictors, the controller is no longer bound to causal response to the sampled data and can preemptively compensate for upcoming events. After introducing the proposed controller, simulation results are provided to compare the effectiveness of this approach in comparison with the existing voltage regulator schemes.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127904643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, certain wNAPS damped oscillatory line flows and generator rotor speeds may be adversely affected by PDCI modulation subject to particular system configurations. Thus, a secondary, similar actuator is investigated to improve these characteristics, and potentially provide additional damping for burdensome contingencies. The Intermountain HVDC (IMDC) line provides less rated capacity than the PDCI, but has the ability to impact troublesome oscillatory modes insufficiently responsive to the PDCI, and is chosen as the secondary actuator for this reason. Inspection of Gershgorin bands of the loop transmission transfer matrix suggests coupling between the PDCI and IMDC channels, and thus care must be taken when introducing multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) feedback. Initial results for the IMDC closed-loop system are provided, as well as a MIMO controller employing a gain-adjusted compensator developed for the SISO PDCI approach.","PeriodicalId":249041,"journal":{"name":"2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121115852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
