S. are summarized. As the frequency of operation is increased toward millimeter-waves and beyond, new circuit configurations are needed to meet a specific challenge. After a brief historical review of quasi-optical mixers, more recent efforts in developing the active quasi-optical planar integrated circuits and components are described. This circuit configuration can exploit the maximum capability of active devices which exhibits ever decreasing performance as the frequency is increased. Simplicity of the circuit and greater flexibility of design can make this technology attractive also at lower microwave frequencies where cost effectiveness is often more emphasized rather than overall performance. Examples include quasi-optical oscillators, power combiners and second harmonic generators.","PeriodicalId":248044,"journal":{"name":"1990 20th European Microwave Conference","volume":"312 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133272623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many applications, this requirement cannot be met, due to size and cost limitations, and the array is divided into subarrays: each element is implemented with a phase shifter (frequency independent phase-shifting device) and each subarray is fed through a single true time delay. The common implementation is with identical contiguous subarrays, which, due to periodicity, cause high sidelobes and grating lobes. We suggest to design divided arrays by trying random sizes of subarrays, with random locations of their centers, in order to avoid periodicity. We develop closed-form expressions for the average array factor, the average power pattern and its variance.","PeriodicalId":248044,"journal":{"name":"1990 20th European Microwave Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133288148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recordings have been supplemented by the acoustic sounding data being probed at Tirupati. Deep fading periods are correlated with different atmospheric structures and also with the radiosonde data collected from the India Meteorological Department observatories. It is found that most of the fading observed is associated with the layered structures that are below the transmitter and can exist upto a height of 500 metres. It is suggested that since high fading is associated with the layers in the regions below the transmitter height, the antennas should be lifted upwards to reduce the fading during the convective conditions.","PeriodicalId":248044,"journal":{"name":"1990 20th European Microwave Conference","volume":"318 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133352622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An alternative measurement strategy, requiring only intensity, has recently gainied credability with the successful application of phase-retrieval algorithms (Anderson & Sali [1]). In its most convenient form, phase-retrieval requires only a single intensity pattern (Gardenier [2], McCormack et al [3]) and the extention of this objective to planar near-field scanning is considered here.","PeriodicalId":248044,"journal":{"name":"1990 20th European Microwave Conference","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132562610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The determination of the scattering matrix of the step by variational methods, for instance, requires some knowledge of E-field at the discontinuity. In particular, the introduction `a priori' of the E-field's distributed singularity along the contour of a general metallic wedge is a most important factor in obtaining fast convergence of the numerical solution. We formulate rigorously this singularity, studying Laplace's equation in conical co-ordinates.","PeriodicalId":248044,"journal":{"name":"1990 20th European Microwave Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134466105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microwave noise in some granular high Tc films at 12 GHz can be as high as 10 pW in 100 MHz bandwidth [1]. We studied these noises in Y-Ba-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films grown on different subsrates in the temperature range from 4.2 to 100 K using current bias and magnetic field as experimental variables. Analysis of the measurements provides valuable information on the superconductor crystalline microstructure, parameters of the intrinsic Josephson clusters, synchronization of the radiation from clusters and on the properties of the intergranular inclusions. Some of these information is difficult or even impossible to obtain by other methods.","PeriodicalId":248044,"journal":{"name":"1990 20th European Microwave Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131661328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
