Additionally, the trend of wind turbines has shown an ongoing power rating growth, reaching sizes up to 10 MW. Multilevel converters have appeared as a solution for large WECSs, due to its high reliability, controllability and the capability to reach high power ratings. This paper presents a control strategy for the application of the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter in Multimegawatts Wind Turbines. Extensive computer simulations and a downscaled laboratory prototype, with twenty-seven power cells, are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.","PeriodicalId":247794,"journal":{"name":"IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128576339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Pole Inverter (ARCPI) has been selected as soft switching topology for this research. Analytic approaches are used to compute the losses and to select the power transistor which best fits this application. Two options to enhance the efficiency are discussed. First, the switching losses of the auxiliary switches are reduced by optimizing the turn on and off sequence. Second, a Resonant Gate Drive (RGD) is employed to reduce the gate losses of the switches. A single phase prototype has been realized. Measurements and computed losses are compared to validate the model and the calculations.","PeriodicalId":247794,"journal":{"name":"IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125737263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on the modulation technique, capacitance mismatches may produce uneven switching transitions of the SMs, hence imbalances in the power losses that can lead to reliability problems. In this paper, a new algorithm that helps to achieve evenly distributed switching and conduction losses within the converter SMs is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on a modification of the common voltage balancing algorithms, balancing a weighted function of voltage and losses. Even distribution of power losses is achieved at the cost of slightly increasing the capacitor voltage ripples. The effectiveness of the strategy has been demonstrated by simulation results of a high-power grid-connected MMC.","PeriodicalId":247794,"journal":{"name":"IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127808537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantages offered by predictive control are used to enhance the dynamics of direct flux vector control. To minimize the problems of variable switching frequency inherent to finite control set predictive control, an alternative approach using pulse width modulation is studied for command execution as occurs in the so-called modulated model predictive control. A comparison between finite control set and modulated model predictive control is presented and the results are also compared with the control implementation through traditional proportional-integral regulators to highlight the advantages and drawbacks of predictive control based strategies. Apart from a greater harmonic content in stator currents, the predictive control can offers control dynamics comparable with proportional-integral control while maintaining immunity against machine parameter variations and excluding the need for controller tuning.","PeriodicalId":247794,"journal":{"name":"IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127368472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the growth of electrical power on-board aircraft, the interaction between the electrical systems and the engine core will become significant. The behaviour of electrical loads (on/off, transient etc.) will have significant impacts on the engine shaft, such as producing transient vibrations, creating stability problems and reducing the efficiency etc. To avoid these problems, an advanced electrical power management system (PMS) is required. This paper introduces novel loading methods for PMS applications to minimize the interactions between electrical and mechanical systems. The strategies, referred as Single Level Multi-edge Switching Loads (SLME), Multilevel Loading (MLL), and Multi-load Single Level Multi-edge Switching Loads (MSLME) are developed based on the Posicast method. An insight look of the developed technique has been studied using the zero-pole root locus. It is demonstrated that the excited poles in the system are cancelled by the addition of zeros, and thus suppressed the EMI vibrations.","PeriodicalId":247794,"journal":{"name":"IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society","volume":"233 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113990235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper with the goal of further reducing the filter size and cost, investigates the possibility of removing the grid side inductance of the LLCL filter considering a minimum value for the grid inductance. The proper range of other parameters of the LLCL filter is explored and a systematic design procedure for them is proposed, which ensures that the common practical filtering requirements are met.
