Microgrid development is one of the most suitable solutions in electrifying the islands while maximizing the utilization of renewable energy sources. In this paper a smart microgrid for a specific island in Indonesia, the Tidung Island, is designed and the challenges and benefits, cost and performance are analyzed. The designed smart microgrid includes diesel generators, solar PV and battery storage systems. Different design options, without and with peak load shaving are considered and compared against each other. The peak load shaving is implemented using Energy Storage System (ESS) and Demand Response (DR). MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results are used to investigate and compare the performance of the proposed designs. In addition, a cost and benefit analysis (CBA) is also carried out to give an approximate cost indication of the three different designs.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130633817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prediction of the state of health of energy storage systems is difficult as it relies on a number of parameters. Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) excitation of energy storage batteries has been shown to be a valid method of battery parameter identification for lead acid batteries [1]. The purpose of this work is to validate PRBS test data from a 3Ah LiFePO4 cell forming part of an EV battery-pack cell against Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) data obtained from an industry-standard potentiostat (Solartron 1480). PRBS results are obtained in under 200 seconds on easily reproducible equipment which can be built into a green energy battery management system, while the EIS process takes over two hours on prohibitively expensive laboratory equipment. This work validates PRBS as a fast and portable method of obtaining the impedance spectrum of Lithium Ion cells, which can then be used to obtain information about SoH of the BESS.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131796152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Proper and efficient management of municipal solid waste (MSW) is vital for achieving sustainable development as the dilemmas associated with energy management, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, waste-to-energy (WTE) cycle, climate change and economy are addressed. Ineffective waste management technique leads to adverse impacts on the environment, public health and lifestyle of future generations. Motivating governmental organizations across the world to take proactive measures to mitigate waste management techniques with less environmental impact and high financial return. A comparison study of five different MSWM techniques based on cost-benefit analysis and mitigation cost breakdown is presented in this paper to identify the most effective and efficient small-scale MSWM systems. The mitigation analysis utilizes the data obtained from the literature to calculate the greenhouse gas reductions, current net and the carbon mitigation cost of each method considering basic landfill technique as the baseline reference. Hybrid techniques like mechanical biological treatment (MBT) in combination with WTE outperforms the other techniques with lowest carbon mitigation cost ($27.3/metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) without carbon emanation rate (CER) and $43.4/ MTCO2e with CER) and reduced GHG emission. Whereas the conventional WTE is ranked second with mitigation costs of $26.5/ MTCO2e without CER and $42.5/ MTCO2e with CER but this technique also offers the largest reductions in terms of greenhouse gases (1.06 million tons/tons of municipal solid waste) which make it stand out from others. Based on the results obtained from the study the economic and environmental impact caused by the usage of WTE or the hybrid MBT in small-scale MSWM system is proven to be highly beneficial and the introduction of carbon credit schemes reduces the carbon mitigation cost of each technique to a greater extent.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121912112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Low temperatures, high charge currents and battery age are known to be contributing factors to increased lithium plating. To reduce or avoid battery ageing induced by lithium plating, a method for lithium plating detection is essential to help understand the favourable conditions under which battery charging is optimised. In this study, we present a concept to design an experiment-based approach to improve lithium plating detection sensitivity using the non-destructive voltage relaxation analysis method. Commercial NCA/graphite cells are employed for this study. Here, the reversible part of the plated lithium providing a unique cell voltage relaxation profile is used as a pseudo-measure to detect the onset of plating. This profile is observed while the cell is at rest as well as under a low C-rate discharge regime immediately after charging. It is found that the CV (Constant Voltage) phase cut-off current value significantly influences plating detection. To address this issue, a procedure to determine the optimal cut-off current in the CV phase of charging is introduced to improve the detection sensitivity. With the proposed method, plating detection chances are improved which will help in understanding the favourable conditions and developing plating control strategies. Furthermore, a correlation between lithium plating and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements are utilized to demonstrate the influence of previous ageing conditions on lithium plating.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130513857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With research focusing on the hydrodynamic and design aspects of the technologies used, little is known of the impact of marine current turbine operation on marine life and the environment. This paper looks at the Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) produced from the operation of the Hydro-Spinna turbine which is a horizontal-axis type concept design under development at Newcastle University. URN measurements were taken from a 280 mm diameter Hydro-Spinna model. The URN measurement was part of a comprehensive investigation conducted on the turbine model, where the local pressure in the tunnel was reduced to induce cavitation to study its characteristics. The noise data was found to correspond to the cavitation observation where the noise increases as more cavitation developed. In addition, only tip vortex cavitation was observed during the investigation indicating that this is the only cavitation characteristic of the Hydro-Spinna turbine. As more tip vortex cavitation was observed, the URN results exhibit an apparent trend, whereby the sound pressure level (SPL) increased and the frequency shifted towards the lower frequency region.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127036668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Solovetsky historical and cultural complex was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Diesel fuel, which is used on the archipelago is expensive and pollutes the environment. By using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based numerical method, this study aims to determine the wind energy potential of the territory, which will cover part of the energy consumption. For the best use of wind potential, several variants of the location of the wind park were analyzed in this study. Thus, using wind energy, as an alternative source, the amount of emissions of harmful substances will be reduced, which is a priority for the Arctic region.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115322932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study, the shrimps were dried in solar dryer (greenhouse dryer) during daytime followed by drying in climate controlled system, which is coordinated with air conditioner, during the night. The low air temperature and relative humidity drying system consists of the humidity control unit (ultrasonic), airconditioner, temperature and relative humidity sensors, heating coil, and microcontroller unit. For low-temperature drying process, the climate control system controls the compressor in the air conditioner by turning the compressor on-off to control the temperature and relative humidity in the chamber. The dehumidification process controls the surface temperature of the evaporator coil close to the dew point temperature, making water vapor in the air condensed to be water drops. The physical properties of the products such as color, hardness, temperature and moisture content were evaluated. The result shows that the greenhouse combined with low humidity air drying takes 16 hr drying time to reduce the 380% initial moisture content to the 14% (d.b) final moisture content of the shrimp. The average temperature and relative humidity in the solar dryer were 45 C and 47% Rh during a daytime. At night, the low-temperature and low–Rh drying system kept the temperature in a range of 28-30C and relative humidity at 40-45 %Rh for drying shrimp. The average temperature and relative humidity for drying were at 29.25C, 42.58% Rh. The qualities of color was 34.51 ± 5.03. Compared with other drying methods, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in this quantity. However, the highest shading value of 152.45 Newton was found by drying using the greenhouse drying combined with low moisture drying.","PeriodicalId":247617,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Smart Grid and Clean Energy","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133299973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
