The way they perceive the new cultures which are truly different from their country will be discussed in this research and the difficulties in trying to adapt the new environment as well. This is since they consider that Semarang is more rural than their own countries. This study involves several international students who are studying at Universitas Negeri Semarang for at least 5 years. Interviews were used to collect data, and coding and interpretation were employed as tools to analyze data. Based on their experiences, the results show that those international students identify the different habits, norms and customs in rural environment, such as public transportation, food, social interactions, etc. In addition, the international students also show culture shock in their first year living in the new rural environment. Hence, the international students at Universitas Negeri Semarang may use their new experiences as their self-development process by coping these difficulties properly. In this case, Kabumi ceremony as a local tradition of East Java rural communities is considered to maintain the sustainability of production in the agricultural sector. But, Kabumi challenged by religious puritanism (Islam) and the presence of modernization in agriculture through intensification, diversification and extensification programs also changed the cropping pattern and indirectly influenced the transformation of kabumi procession. This article discusses the transformation of Kabumi rituals as part of adaptations after the infiltration of Islamic teachings on agricultural communities in rural East Java. This research using the qualitative method and interpretative approach. The infiltration of Islamic teachings directly influenced the transformation of Kabumi. Kabumi's procession adopted Islamic practices and slowly began to abandon the supposedly mystical. It`s supported by the important role of local elites in maintaining the traditions through local policies that provide specific allocations of village income and expenditure budget (APBDes) for kabumi ceremony and concession with religious elites. It also becomes the Mangkunegara VII wisdom to do realize the reforestation policies. In addition to reforest Wonogiri, which had become a critical land due to the abandonment of land after being used as coffee plantation during the colonial period, The Mangkunegara VII also built facilities and infrastructures that support the sustainability of the forest in this area, such as improvement of waterways, irrigations and construction of several reservoirs. The story of the Javanese forest is mostly an oral tradition that contains a mixture of reality, myths and a set of prohibitions recounted from generation to generation repeatedly and agreed upon the truth. As one of the coastal areas in Indonesia that has a high level of vulnerability to sea level rise, currently Semarang has experienced to inundation. Some areas in North Semarang such as Bandar Harjo and Tugu has been inundated and abandoned by its residents for quite a long time. The unavailability of information on disaster hazard prediction maps for future conditions is the background of the need for making accurate and actual flood hazard maps to minimize the impact of disasters. The combination between Geographical Information System (GIS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been used to analyze and to determine the weight and score the risk map of Semarang City. As a result, 37% (141.403km2) areas of Semarang City are vulnerable to flood. This result is divided into 19 % high vulnerable, 13% moderate and 5% are low. We must notice that it has hurt the diversity. There are many events which express people’s egoism then result in intolerance. It seems really obvious to see the sepration of choice between “here and “there”, between “me” and “you”, all of which have marginalized the nature of diversity. The tendency of those intolerances must be seen as a serious problem. In addition, Indonesia has a strong foundation of tolerance through historical experience in acculturation and the nature of diversity. In a number of regions, diversity is supported by the atmosphere of tolerance between national elements that is clearly exposed, and that is a reality that diversity plays a role as natural interaction dynamics and attitude. One of the areas which can be a model is Lasem, Rembang, an area which is located in north coast of Central Java. With the condition of its diversity especially in religion, Lasem is able to maintain the diversity of life which prioritises pancasila values; therefore, it ends up with harmonious, safe, and peace life, and also can perform the values of cooperation and tolerance. This research aims to know how the diversity of life based on cultures values in multiculturalism society in Lasem, Rembang is, and what the model of harmony of multicultural in Lasem is. In this research was found that Lasem is the region which is able to manage the diversity to be a harmonious life. Lasem societies always prioritise ukhkuwah basyariah and ukhuwah wathoniyah to create the dynamic and harmonious life. Lasem is proper to be role model of diversity in Indonesia and to be baldatun thayyibatun warabbun ghafur based on the spirit of pancasila. Some strategies in developing the harmony in multiculturalism which can be taken from lasem are: (1) Strengthen the religious studies of every society, (2) Improving the role of community figures and leaders, (3) improving the role of government, (4) Developing the open minded and good relationship among societies, (5) improving the solidarity in facing external threats (6) Affiliating the residence without any insulation and grouping, (7) Improving the cooperation among multicultural elements of society in their everyday life, (8) Improving the acculturation among people.","PeriodicalId":247554,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Rural Studies in Asia (ICoRSIA 2018)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129406797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
