{"title":"Hvid[mə] Archive","authors":"Annarosa Krøyer Holm, Miriam Haile","doi":"10.7146/ntik.v7i2.118486","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7146/ntik.v7i2.118486","url":null,"abstract":"This essay describes how the artistic research project Hvid[mə] Archive started as a critical comment on the Danish Royal Cast Collection’s exhibition in the colonial West Indian Warehouse at the harbour front in Copenhagen. The essay situates the project as a response to the lack of verbalization about the warehouse’s colonial past, as well as to the lack of a verbalization about the context and history that the plaster cast collection is a product of. Furthermore, the essay clarifies the use and re-conceptualization of the Danish noun hvidme, and how it created an entry point for a contemporary critical whiteness discourse in a specific Danish art context. The essay also describes how the project developed into the artistic research project and collaboration that it is today. A decolonial and intersectional artist collaboration, that seeks to facilitate exhibitions, encourage artistic workshops and networks, host events with visual artists, cultural producers, writers and theorists working within a decolonial and critical frame. Belle, Tami Navarro, Hadiya Sewer, Tiphanie Yanique","doi":"10.7146/ntik.v7i2.118478","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7146/ntik.v7i2.118478","url":null,"abstract":"This article is written in what can be described as the “post-centennial” era, post 2017, the year marked by the 100th anniversary of the sale and transfer of the Virgin Islands from Denmark to the United States. 2017 marked a shift in the conversation around and between Denmark and its former colonies in the Caribbean, most notably the increasing access of Virgin Islanders to the millions of archival records that remain stored in Denmark as they began to emerge in online databases and temporarily in exhibitions. That year the Virgin Islands Studies Collective, a group of four women (La Vaughn Belle, Tami Navarro, Hadiya Sewer and Tiphanie Yanique) from the Virgin Islands and from various disciplinary backgrounds, also emerged with an intention to center not only the archive, but also archival access and the nuances of archival interpretation and intervention. This collaborative essay, Ancestral Queendom: Reflections on the Prison Records of the Rebel Queens of the 1878 Fireburn in St. Croix, USVI (formerly the Danish West Indies), is a direct engagement with the archives and archival production. Each member responds to one of the prison records of the four women taken to Denmark for their participation in the largest labor revolt in Danish colonial history. This need is particularly prominent in reading promotion for groupswhere reading and reading proficiency is decreasing (Sverige. Litteraturutredningen 2010). This article concernstwo “research circles” where librarians reflected on and explored different possibilities for reading promotion.The purpose of this article is to understand how the research circle was used as a resource for knowledge building,and for the changes and development of the librarians’ work with reading promotion in different contexts. Theoverarching theoretical framework is sociocultural (Vygotskij 1978, Bakhtin, 1984; Wertsch 1998). The source ofdata used includes audio-recorded meetings, the reflections I wrote in proximity to the meetings and interviewswith the participants. The results show how the participants became important resources for each other throughthe exchange of experiences and through critical reflection. The investigations challenged the participants’flexibility and ability to cope with uncertainty and to remain open to change. The interviews indicate that therehave been changes in the participants' understanding of reading-promotion and that this kind of supplementaryeducation has the prerequisites to achieve lasting results. Lund","doi":"10.7146/NTIK.V7I3.111485","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7146/NTIK.V7I3.111485","url":null,"abstract":"The Danish public library as a new institution and the corresponding new librarian profession were established by law about 1918-20 and soon played an active role within circulation and mediation of literature/fiction. From a view of the sociology of literature and via a brief assessment of the concept of the literary life, the article intends to overview the position and significance of this institution in Denmark during these hundred years, and as for some special subfields more detailed and methodologically to discuss the interplays of the literary life and field. Not focusing on the growth rate of the libraries‘ buying and lending of fiction copies, of educated librarians, or of the increasing importance of the compensating artist royalties to the authors as evident quantitation markers, some other thematic subfields have been selected: buying structure at the book market, librarians as literature specialists, book selection as for function, taste and qualification, the library as self-interest publicity including relations literary periodicals/magazines, and examples of mediation initiatives, and finally a short adding up of today. These subfields are inquired each chronologically, there is no total account, so.
