The use of smart meters and, in the near future, smart appliances, are the key to achieve reduction in energy consumption. This research proposes a non-intrusive appliance monitor and recognition system for implementation on an embedded system. The research focuses on computational efficiency of such a system as embedded systems usually have limited computation power. In this paper, research has been done on the effects on the accuracy of the sample frequency. The algorithm first detects an event in which an appliance is turned either on or off. Subsequently its profile is extracted. A hierarchical support vector machine (HSVM) is used to classify the appliance. The result is a complete algorithm that recognizes individual appliances within a household. This paper explores a new way to locate the fault in compensated network. The distribution networks have more and more loop structures which could bring significant information for the fault location. The proposed method uses the communications that can be brought by a smarter distribution network. Multiple measurements provide an implicit equation of the fault location. This equation reduces the use of badly known parameters. Monte Carlo results are presented to compare the method with single measurement point and the methods with two measurement points. Overhead lines and cables are both studied with PI line model in this paper. In Japan, a large scale penetration of photovoltaic generation is promoted, and there is a concern about its influence on load frequency control (LFC). Utilization of battery energy storage system (BESS) for LFC is expected as one of the countermeasures against it. In this paper, area control error (ACE) assignment suitable for making effective use of both of existing LFC unit and BESS is investigated under large-scale RE penetration condition. This paper first recalls the project main concepts and briefly describes the proposed solutions. Then it gives an overview of the laboratory tests and the first results of the demonstrations that take place in three field test sites with different demographic and electricity supply characteristics in Italy, Spain and France. In the proposed approach, generation rescheduling is selected as a preventive control action and this control action is considered as a constrained optimization problems where the constraints are dynamic security of the system, generation limits and loading capabilities of transmission lines. The security constrained generation rescheduling is implemented through BB-BC method which optimizes the total fuel cost during the preventive control. The paper proposes to complement the existing control strategies by predictive control strategy - adaptive emergency control, which implies identification of the emergency, until the emergency has occurred. In this paper presented the smart predictive voltage stability assessment (VSA) for the adaptive emergency control techniques on the basis of the artificial neural network methodology. The main idea of the smart predictive VSA here is a creation of a neural network model, based on a self-organized Kohonen map SOM that will be able to perform monitoring and prediction of emergency condition. This paper presents a scenario in which such potential is explored and its range of application is identified. It shows first that implementation of a virtual inductance is naturally suited for combination with Virtual Flux-based control systems, and that it can be extended to the more general case of a virtual reactance. The paper then presents the structure of a control system for operation under unbalanced conditions, where the virtual inductance directly influences the current reference calculation. However, with the current communication systems mainly optimized for human to human communications, there are important capabilities that need to be developed in M2M systems in order to fully realize the new smart services enabled by M2M. In this paper, we provide an overview of M2M and its applications to smart grid. In particular, we discuss technical areas where data mining and machine learning can play an important role in realizing various smart functionalities in the future power grid. As a case study, we also present a novel phase identification technique in smart grid based on smart meter data. In order to ensure the security of operation and power quality in these grids, transmission and distribution power system operators have issued connection and operation guidelines related to integration of distributed generation. Some of these guidelines are designed to assess fault ride-through capabilities when dynamic connection studies are performed for distributed generation units. While most of the ongoing research have addressed especially the fault ride-through capabilities of the investigated generation unit when the most severe fault occur close to the point of common coupling, some research questions remain related to the adequacy of the representation of the external grid.
