These static switches work in Medium Voltage range between 7 kVAC to 52 kVAC and have proved excellent reliability. High Speed Rail (HSR) systems are supplied by 25 kVAC one phase. To consume balanced power for HV three phase transport grids Neutral Sections (NZ) are disposed to change the power phase-to-phase. To reduce the effect of NZs in the HSR system a static switch based solution has been designed. Electrical, thermal and mechanical design of the power electronics is presented. The control strategy is designed to assure the train supply during the NZ crossing. There exist methods to correlate apparent resistivity measurements with a multilayer earth model, generally based on iterative optimization algorithms, but all suffer from a general sensitivity to the starting point. This paper will investigate the difficulties of building these machines and their advantages and shortcomings. Electrical, magnetic and mechanical difficulties are investigated and ways to overcome these difficulties are fully explained. A novel hybrid construction technique is advocated in which both laminations and powdered iron is used together. The laminations are employed in regions of high saturation where the fields are laminar and the powdered iron in regions where the field is truly three dimensional. A prototype machine has been designed and fully tested and this was reported by the author in a previous paper. Some of complexities in building these machines are not encountered in any other type of machine because of the specific designs employed in these machines. The main reasons are the problems occurring with advanced approaches, namely complexity and high time effort of necessary stability proof and design process. In observer and control design, the special characteristics of power-electronic systems are often neglected. The robustness and the quality especially of the state estimation of the observer can be improved by the pole-restraining observer (PRO) approach. In this paper, the PRO approach is applied to a realistic 16.7-Hz two-level IGBT line-side-converter application. In this context, diagnosing the status of the motor magnets is crucial for improving the reliability of the machines. This paper is focused on the demagnetization of the rotor magnet trailing edges, due to large stator currents, in five-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors. The noninvasive detection method is based on the Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) of the back-emf induced in the a-β planes, and exploits the degrees of freedom of a multiphase motor drive. The proposed approach is validated by means of two dimensional (2-D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and numerical simulations. Equipped with an embarked energy buffer for diesel generator support and utility grid interface, such a locomotive can be considered as a plug-in series hybrid vehicle. The driveline inductive components, like generator and motor windings and capacitive components like dc link capacitors can be used to provide STATCOM functions, and the energy buffer can be used for short-term grid support. The co-action of power electronics circuitries and diesel generator gives a possibility to observe the locomotive as a mobile versatile power plant for special rolling stock and emergency supply. This paper introduces two innovative methods of absorbing a ratio of the energy remains of the main engine exhaust gases and converting it to electrical energy. The recovered power is then injected to the electrical bus of the helicopter through power electronics converters. The first one uses thermoelectric generators whereas the second one an electromechanical generator. The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is one of the emerging technology for high- or medium- voltage transformerless power conversion. The possibility to directly control the traction motors by means of a dc/ac MMC topology, using also integrated energy storage systems (ESS) for recovering the kinetic energy, is exploited. Furthermore, a simplified mathematical model of the MMC with integrated ESS has been developed in order to evaluate the behavior of the traction unit during a typical load-cycle. The control law of the traction motor, integrated with energy storage flow management, has been introduced.
