At the same time, we see non-China deaths increasing rapidly, and similar to the early behavior of the China statistics. Thus, we see three stages of the spread of the disease in terms of number of deaths: exponential growth, power-law behavior, and then exponential decline in the daily rate. (Original abstract) The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to grow rapidly in China and is spreading in other parts of the world. The classic epidemiological approach in studying this growth is to quantify a reproduction number and infection time, and this is the approach followed by many studies on the epidemiology of this disease. However, this assumption leads to exponential growth, and while the growth rate is high, it is not following exponential behavior. One approach that is being used is to simply keep adjusting the reproduction number to match the dynamics. Other approaches use rate equations such as the SEIR and logistical models. Here we show that the current growth closely follows power-law kinetics, indicative of an underlying fractal or small-world network of connections between susceptible and infected individuals. Positive deviations from this growth law might indicate either a failure of the current containment efforts while negative deviations might indicate the beginnings of the end of the pandemic. We cannot predict the ultimate extent of the pandemic but can get an estimate of the growth of the disease.","PeriodicalId":243145,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Educational Excellence","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115964471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS We developed a modified stacked auto-encoder for modeling the transmission dynamics of the epidemics. We applied this model to real-time forecasting the confirmed cases of Covid-19 across China. The data were collected from January 11 to February 27, 2020 by WHO. We used the latent variables in the auto-encoder and clustering algorithms to group the provinces/cities for investigating the transmission structure. RESULTS We forecasted curves of cumulative confirmed cases of Covid-19 across China from Jan 20, 2020 to April 20, 2020. Using the multiple-step forecasting, the estimated average errors of 6-step, 7-step, 8-step, 9-step and 10-step forecasting were 1.64%, 2.27%, 2.14%, 2.08%, 0.73%, respectively. We predicted that the time points of the provinces/cities entering the plateau of the forecasted transmission dynamic curves varied, ranging from Jan 21 to April 19, 2020. The 34 provinces/cities were grouped into 9 clusters. CONCLUSIONS The accuracy of the AI-based methods for forecasting the trajectory of Covid-19 was high. We predicted that the epidemics of Covid-19 will be over by the middle of April. If the data are reliable and there are no second transmissions, we can accurately forecast the transmission dynamics of the Covid-19 across the provinces/cities in China. The AI-inspired methods are a powerful tool for helping public health planning and policymaking.","PeriodicalId":243145,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Educational Excellence","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116670356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

China has taken the most hit since the outbreak of the virus, which could be dated as far back as late November by some experts. It was not until January 23rd that the Wuhan government finally recognized the severity of the epidemic and took a drastic measure to curtain the virus spread by closing down all transportation connecting the outside world. In this study, we seek to answer a few questions: How did the virus get spread from the epicenter Wuhan city to the rest of the country? To what extent did the measures, such as, city closure and community quarantine, help controlling the situation? More importantly, can we forecast any significant future development of the event had some of the conditions changed? By collecting and visualizing publicly available data, we first show patterns and characteristics of the epidemic development; we then employ a mathematical model of disease transmission dynamics to evaluate the effectiveness of some epidemic control measures, and more importantly, to offer a few tips on preventive measures.","PeriodicalId":243145,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Educational Excellence","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115150427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improving it in higher education is extremely important not only for the scientific production generated by university but also for the adequacy of the training that future graduates will be offered; professionals facing an increasingly demanding labour market with new needs. University teachers training, thus, should be a priority in academic policies due to their influence and the role played in the evolution of society, as well as being the basis of the quality of Higher Education. This research, a case study in the State of Goias (Brazil), is focused on a sample of practicing university teachers from different fields of knowledge, and has as main objective to know the characteristics of the training received for their professional practice, both in the field of scientific education and their educational role and ability to transfer knowledge. The methodology used has been mixed, not experimental and descriptive, with the help of instruments for data collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative nature (questionnaires, interviews, monitoring, checklists, documentary analysis, etc.). The results confirmed the initial hypothesis, which stated that university teachers current training is primarily scientific and technical, and has gaps in the teacher training required today for a more effective work in the classroom. In this area teachers often use teaching methodologies supported by previous experiences with traditional features. Finally, to optimize this situation, different strategies for university teachers training are proposed seeking to improve both their reflection and teaching practice.","PeriodicalId":243145,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Educational Excellence","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122492756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these last years, several terms have been used interchangeably to refer to self-regulated learning. Among these terms, particularly noteworthy are the terms of self-directed learning, autonomous learning, independent learning, and self-learning. Nonetheless, the term self-regulated learning is the one that has prevailed. Selfregulated learning is a type of technical learning in which the learner manages his/her cognition, behaviour, affection and motivations actively and responsively (all of which are systematically oriented to achieving the set goals. Self-regulated learning is a new construct that considers the various types of cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, contextual and behavioural variables, all of which lead to a quality learning process. Students who self regulate their learning and studying processes are more active, effective and efficient and demonstrate substantially higher levels of motivation. Key-Words: Self-Regulated Learning, Metacognition, Self-Perceptions, Creating Writing, Self-Analysis.","PeriodicalId":243145,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Educational Excellence","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122923714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper’s principal objective is to reflect upon students’ and teachers’ perspectives on benefits and challenges of the blended learning mode of delivery for Spanish programme. It examines the online reading and writing module to assess student writing interaction as well as to determine best practice in the teaching of these skills in the foreign language at the tertiary level in a twenty-first century Caribbean context. In order to carry out this reflection, action research was used therefore its data collection consisted of observations of the course design before and after the innovation, student surveys and teacher interviews. Among the most relevant findings are: students and teachers prefer to have an online delivery of this class rather than the previous face to face class; the variety of activities lead to higher interaction among students; change of roles for teachers and students, fostering more active learning among students; and a rise of digital culture for academic purposes. However, some restructuring is required in terms of teachers’ feedback delivery and students’ and teachers’ required time for activities. As recommendations the paper suggests continued promoting of this online module since it develops both technological literacy and higher written interaction in the first year of the Spanish programme. a The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. The study is approached from a descriptive/interpretive perspective, starting from the findings of diagnostic research which examined the professors views about the educational/organizational workings of ICT at the National University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua, for its Spanish acronym). The results revealed the needs demonstrated by the professoriate regarding ICT training. This led to the design of a training programme structured in three units: (a) ICT in the new context of higher education; (b) online information searches, and; (c) educational applications of Web 2.0, aimed at developing teachers better prepared for the 21 century. In the pre-technology education context, the teacher controlled the instructional process, the content was delivered to the entire class and the teacher emphasized factual knowledge. However, the current global demands in education require the use of approaches that are learner-centered and embracing integration of ICT. The purpose of this study is to establish the pedagogy used in Kenya for the 21st century learner. The case study design was used to collect qualitative data from three teachers who were purposively sampled from three education sub-sectors in Kenya: primary, secondary and university. The interview was guided by three research questions: Which teaching practices are used in Kenya? Which are the ‘best’ teaching practices in Kenya in the 21st century? What are the barriers for the ‘best’ teaching practices in Kenya? The findings were that the teaching methods currently in use were mainly teacher-centered although the respondents revealed that the ‘best’ teaching practices for the 21st century learner were student-centered. However, the barriers were large classes, lack of resources and facilities among other factors. The study recommends realignment of education policies to give priority to build pedagogical capabilities of teachers, provide digital tools and other resources. This would enable the 21st century learners’ opportunity to unleash their potential.","PeriodicalId":243145,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Educational Excellence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123145121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
