In a computerized system, the analysis normally involves classification process to determine disease and its condition. In an earlier work based on a database of 315 fundus images (FINDeRS), it is found that the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) enlargement strongly correlates with diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression having a correlation factor up to 0.883 at significant levels better than 0.01. However, it is also found that the FAZ areas can belong to different DR severity but with different levels of certainty having a Gaussian distribution. In this research work, the suitability of the Gaussian Bayes classifier in determining DR severity level is investigated. A v-fold cross-validation (VFCF) process is applied to the FINDeRS database to evaluate the performance of the classifier. It is shown that the classifier achieved sensitivity of >84%, specificity of >97% and accuracy of >95% for all DR stages. At high values of sensitivity (>95%), specificity (>97%) and accuracy (>98%) obtained for No DR and Severe NPDR/PDR stages, the Gaussian Bayes classifier is suitable as part of a computerised DR grading and monitoring system for early detection of DR and for effective treatment of severe cases.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116106660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This abnormality is predominant among woman of childbearing age where the secretion of estrogen hormone is significant. The most crucial factor is that the presence of fibroid can cause infertility and repeated miscarriage. In the recent years, ultrasonic imaging found to be an appropriate tool for diagnosis of uterus related disorders. This paper presents an automated detection of uterine fibroid by using wavelet features and a neural network classifier. Based on user-defined ROI, a three level wavelet packet decomposition is applied to calculate the vertical and horizontal coefficients. In order to distinguish the normal and fibroid uterus images, a feed forward backpropogation neural network(BPNN) classifier is used and the performance are evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity and classification accuracy. It is observed from the experimental study that a classification accuracy of 95.1% is achieved which indicates the suitability of the proposed scheme for clinical evaluation","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"208 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116215984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study the constrained prostate soft tissue deformation through a finite element model is evaluated. The study considers a sensitivity analysis of the target reaching error with respect to the mechanical, insertion and anatomical parameters in presence of the kinematics constraint on the tissue. The needle insertion into the soft tissue is simulated using the proposed Finite Element Method (FEM). Based on acquired results, the insertion of needle induces a considerable rotation of the prostate tissue due to its specific kinematics and support structure. Such rotation can increase the sensitivity of the error to mechanical properties of the tissue especially to the Poisson ratio. It is shown that even minor changes in Poisson ratio (4%) leads to large target reaching errors (9 fold).","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122009264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to investigate biomechanical effects of anterior decompression and posterior instrumentation and evaluate the role of short-segment pedicle screw instrument in order to preservation of adequate spine stability as well as appropriate spinal segment motion. Finite element model of the spinal segments T11 to L3 was developed to simulate burst fracture of L1 and analyse stabilization method using spinal fusion by cage and bone graft, pedicle screws and short rods for thoracolumbar spine. Computed tomography image datasets were obtained from a local hospital and three dimensional model of the region of interest were developed through manual segmentation. Rods and screws for the construct were modeled in three dimensions with appropriate simplifications to ensure that the simulations could be analysed completely. The vertebrae were assigned with bone material properties and the intervertebral discs were modeled as two parts - the nucleus pulposus and the annular fibrosis. Flexion, extension and lateral bending movements of the spine segment were simulated and the stresses and deformation generated within the vertebral segment as well as within the rods and screws were analysed. Results showed that adequate stabilization can be achieved through fixation at T12 and L2 for burst fracture of L1 and risk of failure at the critical area.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"264 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133455680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have been attempts to develop complex algorithms for automated diagnosis based on heart sounds. It is however, observed that developmental work towards integrated automated auscultation system targeted towards mass screening has been relatively low. In this paper, we propose a new framework for analysis of acoustical cardiac signals which is suitable for development of point of care cardiac healthcare products. Wavelet analysis has been employed for denoising of the signal which enables the systems applicability in a rural health centre. The new framework also effectively focuses on selection of best wavelet basis through entropy measures and reducing the time-frequency decomposition cycles.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132779926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chemical compositions of CoCrMo alloy released in simulated body fluid will be the main point of concern in this study. The toxic element released (cobalt, chromium, nickel and iron) were analyzed from high carbon and low carbon CoCrMo alloy by inductively couple plasma mass spectrometer (ICPMS). The concentrations of element in low carbon (Cobalt-0.502ppm, Chromium-0.337ppm, Nickel - 0ppm, Ferum - 0ppm) compared to the element in high carbon (Cobalt-0.592ppm, Chromium-0.317ppm, Nickel - 0ppm, Ferum - 0ppm) shows no significant different, and can be represented as a combination of one results (Cobalt-8.75E-3%, Chromium-2.8E-4%, Nickel - 0, Ferum - 0). The average cobalt concentration of elements released were increased in cell culture from high and low carbon is (8.75E-3%) and (6.189E-3%) in RPMI 1640 medium. Nevertheless, (chromium, nickel and iron) element released in a low concentrations and low response in cell culture conditions (2.8E-4%, 0%, 0%) and (2.4E-5%, 0%, 1.18E-3%) in RPMI 1640 medium.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133320137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In iridology, there are many factors in it iris analysis have to be considered due to complex iris's structure. Practitioners have to measure color of iris, its density, sign on iris image and the location of body organ in iris image as stated in iridology chart. Currently, iris diagnosis systems have certain weaknesses. This paper proposed an approach to discover those problems. An accurate iris image will be obtained by using new segmentation technique in iris recognition which called water flow method. This research expected to fulfill all the iridology practitioners need in order to diagnose patient health.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117217818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project aims at identifying the difference of forehand overhead smash performed by male and female players. The parameters to study were focused on upper arm, forearm and wrist segments. Qualisys Track Manager (QTM) software and five Oqus camera system were used to record and analyze the performance of e subjects. Eight male and eight female participants served as the subjects. Reflective markers were attached at the key locations on the subject's arm to observe the arm movement during the execution of smash. The subject was directed to stand on the position of the smashing area within the measurement volume and his/her partner who was assigned to serve was directed to stand in the serving area. A sequence of badminton smash movements, from the position of holding racket to smashing motion was captured by the camera. The results obtained indicated that the male subject has higher racquet grip velocity than the female subject. The movement of shoulder abduction and elbow extension were anticipated to be the key contributor for the male players to perform a rapid smash. The female subjects showed a synchronized and significant range of motion especially in the wrist rotation.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122490713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
