The endogenous electromagnetic field of the human body is studied experimentally from 33 healthy human subjects. Different parts of the body radiation frequency are investigated separately into four groups of top, torso, arm and bottom. Statistical properties of body radiation frequency have been investigated. It is found that human bodies have different relationship of body radiation between males and females, where the most significant different was obtained on arm and top group.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114476366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method uses Modular neural network (MNN) model to classify arrhythmia into normal and abnormal classes. We have performed experiments on UCI Arrhythmia data set. Missing attribute values of this data set are replaced by closest column value of the concern class. We have constructed neural network model by varying number of hidden layers from one to three and are trained by varying training percentage in data set partitions. In this study, we are mainly interested in producing high confident arrhythmia classification results to be applicable in diagnostic decision support systems. This data set is a good environment to test classifiers as it is incomplete and ambiguous bio-signal data collected from total 452 patient cases. The classification performance is evaluated using six measures; sensitivity, specificity, classification accuracy, mean squared error (MSE), receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and area under curve (AUC). The experimental results presented in this paper show that up to 82.22% testing classification accuracy can be obtained.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130243738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fast diagnostic method is required to give an accurate result of a suspected dengue patient in order to save lives. Long period grating -LPG (or sometimes known as long period fibre grating-LPFG) has a fast detection method almost to real time gives an immediate result and it is highly sensitive towards its ambient refractive index. Long period grating is a modified fibre optic with grating at a specific portion of the optical fibre; the fibre optics signal transmission does not decay easily and remains almost ideal for all application. This paper aims to study an alternative approach to screen patient who are suspected with dengue and results obtained will be used as a future guideline for subsequent research.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128540326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As improvement of quality of life, increasing interest of exercise, it has been studied and developed products briskly for exercise management. As such products are developed mainly for outdoors activity, however, it has a limitation to systematically manage exercise in consideration of fitness club environment. We want to overcome this limitation through by development of systematically exercise management system using interacting interface network. We devised system suitable to control and monitor systematic exercise using bio-module available for real-time bio-signal processing based on a novel algorithm that could reduce operation complexity when users do exercise in the fitness club environment. The overall system is composed of bio-module that can collect bio-signal information and analyze signal in real time, exercise equipment control module and exercise management server. Based on bio-signal information processed in real time, it is possible for exercise management prescription in real time according to user's health condition using organically interacting communication. We expect that our suggested system contribute to propagation and development of sports health care field.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133646905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a new registration algorithm which uses the mutual information (MI) as the similarity measurement function and utilizes a new optimization algorithm, called honey bee mating optimization (HBMO), to obtain the optimal registration. By simulating the biological evolution, HBMO can obtain a set of optimized parameters for registration with the largest similarity measure. By applying the proposed method to medical images, the experimental results showed that the method achieved better accuracy in registration than the conventional Powell's optimization method which is the most commonly used method in medical image registration. Also, the proposed method remained stable and accurate during the experiment of using several different source images. With each source image, we calculated mean ± SD of the parameters by repeating twenty times.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"228 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132024122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ISFET sensor plays a critical role in biomedical instrumentation system. It serves at the front end of instruments in signal acquisition and conditioning circuit, interfacing between the electronic signals and biological signals from physiologic systems being measured. ISFET sensor fabricated with CMOS technology benefits from low cost production, low power and miniaturization enabling for micro-system. OrCAD PSpice facilitates design and testing of circuitry before the costly fabrication, with a library of built in macro models. However, even with its current popularity, macro model for ISFET devices have not yet been made available. Our work contributes to the development of a new macro model for H+ ISFET in PSpice to allow the characterization and parameterization of such devices to be simulated before costly fabrication. Its functionality is verified by comparing its drain current characteristic against that generated from source code from previous work, with discrepancy in sensitivity of ±8% for pH [4 7 10]. It is also found that good performance of H+ ISFET can be achieved with smaller drain voltage which results in faster response, higher sensitivity to chemical input signal, higher reading of drain current, lower cut-off voltage and higher sensitivity in output voltage to change in pH, of 54.79 mV/pH at drain voltage of 0.1V, through simulated experimentation with the newly created macro model.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133169595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method consists of electro thermal actuators for driving of neural probes and a bidirectional operation has been provided. The main design criterion has been the simplicity of fabrication process. The micro mechanical structure also has a self-latch mechanism to provide optimum power consumption. Locking compression plate (LCP) achieved it through locking screws that create a fixed-angle construct providing angular stability. The plate and screws combination to construct a stable fixation depends on factors such as the type of fracture and surgical preference. The optimum combination can provide optimum result in terms of achieving boney union. In this study, three combinations of screw placement with only one screw for each bone fragment for a fracture fixation construct using LCP were analysed via finite element method. Three dimensional model of a tibia and fibula were reconstructed from computed tomography image datasets, and an oblique fracture was simulated at the midshaft of the tibia. Eight-hole LCP was placed across the fractured line and three screws placement were simulated. The properties of bone were assigned with a stiffness of 17GPa and Poisson's ratio of 0.3, ligaments were modelled as rigid links, and load equivalent to three times the body weight was applied equally to the tibial plateau. Results showed that there placement of screws the closest to the fracture side will provide more stabiliy and less stress to the implant and the fracture construct itself. The results are unique to the simulated oblique fracture, and other types of fracture could also be analysed using the same method.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131426421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A three-dimensional finite element model of L2, L3 and L4 was developed to investigate the effects of laminotomy, or partial unilateral laminectomy to the spinal structure. The vertebral model was extracted from computed tomography image datasets while the soft tissues such as the intervertebral discs, ligaments and the facets were modeled manually. A hemilaminectomy and two simulated laminotomy at L3 were virtually performed. Hemilaminectomy was simulated with a straight cut to one side of the lamina. Two models of laminotomy were simulated - one where half of the lamina was removed and another where one-third of the lamina was removed. Forces were applied to allow flexion and extension of the spinal segment. Stresses generated on the posterior parts and the ROM were analysed. Results showed that the minimally invasive laminotomy produced less stress on the posterior and maintain the stability of the lumbar spine.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"108 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117293376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
