The biosensing principle is based on immobilization of the bioreceptor to produce a biochemical reaction. The novel potentiometric circuit converts this biochemical event into a measurable electrical output. The transduction stage transforms the changes in enzymatic reaction in salivary alpha amylase, influenced by the level of human stress into resistivity within range of 1.2–1.3kΩ and corresponding potential of 108.6 to − 100mV. The subsequent stages condition the signal to attain an output of 0–5V. The design for filtering stage employs a first order high and low pass filter to capture stress signals, known with frequency of 0.15–0.4Hz. Performance of the circuit is evaluated with simulation and experimental study. On the average, discrepancy less than 3.69%, 4.5% and 3.7% is found between simulation and experimental results for the three stages of the circuit respectively.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125358887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the pilot study which assessed the multivariate analysis of EEG and ECG activity in the healthy and sleep apnoea patients during different sleep stages. Three synchronization measures based on a linear method (cross-correlation), information theory (mutual information) and nonlinear interdependence, were applied to analyse the EEG and ECG signals. The results indicated that the brain is dependent more on the heart electrical activity during different sleep stages and brain hemispheres in the healthy and sleeps apnoea. This might suggest that the information that flows from the heart, actually modulates the brain electrical activity or simply that heart drives the brain activity.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114732917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on anecdotes of cancer patients and survivors, we found that many patients and survivors do not seek for proper diet guidance and rely on their network for such information. Realizing the importance of proper diet to cancer patients, a personalized dietary planning and menu construction is proposed. The proposed system will offer information on dietary and nutritional tips, seven day meal plan and collection of healthy recipes. Research on user requirement of the system has been conducted in order to identify and analyze information regarding cancer patients' diet and nutritional that is useful to them. The outcome of this research is a complete list of user requirements for development of personalized cancer dietary planning and menu constructions. The result of the user requirements analysis is a web-based system that recommends tips, guidelines and meal plan for cancer patients. All recommendations are based on individual health information and current health status.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133883997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gene identification is an optimization problem in Eukaryotic DNA splicing. An optimal solution is essential which may help in better protein translation. We have proposed a novel approach for gene identification by employing discrete wavelet transforms for noise reduction in DNA sequences and introducing a new indicator sequence for better signal generation. Wavelet transforms greatly reduced the background noise and visible peaks of genic regions were found in power spectral estimation. The comparative analysis of proposed and existing approaches showed significant results for novel approach over prevailing solutions over dataset Yersinia pestis (ACCESSION: NC_004088, 4000 bp, four genes and exons from location 5000 bp to 8999 bp). Similar outperformace was observed over many other datasets.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132027329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ELISA CD was designed based on the centrifugal force as a driving force while capillary force acts as preventing barrier. The CD composed of 2 layers: the substrate layer is made of PMMA and the top layer is laminated with an Adhesive Sealing Films (ASF) or thermal seal. The PMMA substrate was fabricated by CNC micromachining. The ELISA CD consists of 7 reservoirs: waste, detection, serum, conjugate, washing solution, substrate and stopping solution. In the experiment, the reservoirs were filled with colour liquid and the fluid flow behaviour of the liquid in the CD was studied and monitored by a customized CD spin stand system equipped with visualization system. The experimental test results show an average of 9% error when compared with the theoretical calculation of burst frequency for all the reservoirs.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122035452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Works by Abdul Rahman et. al. had created this database. However, the database contains large amounts of redundant genetic data. The storage of uncompressed data is suboptimal because it would consume large storage space as well as slow down transmissions over networks. In this paper, we propose the integration of compression algorithm into the AD genetic database to optimize its storage space. We describe our implementation as well as the results. The compression algorithm had managed to reduce the storage space of the AD database to 38.89% of the original storage space.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121381525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acetylcholine sensitive ENFET functions not only as a voltage controlled conductance but can also provide a means of measurement of specific neurotransmitters that bind with the receptor sites of postsynaptic membrane. This analog is incorporated into the famous Hodgkin-Huxley (H-H) model of neuron to substitute the variable Na+ conductance. Simulation is performed in MATLAB environment both for normal (excitatory) and pathologic states and results are presented.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126690028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subjects consisted of 10 males (age 27.7±5.42) and 10 females (age 27.5±5.91) with no history of musculoskeletal injury or back problem at the time of participation. Surface electromyography (EMG) signal were recorded from the right and left Levator Scapulae, Upper Trapezius, Anterior Deltoid and Erector Spinae which are known as the weaken and tighten muscles due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). The EMG signal was processed and normalized in the form of % MVC for analysis. The overall results indicated that the upper limb and lower back muscles activities increased significantly when performing work at the far boundary work area. The muscle activity at the far boundary work area is averagely 17% greater than at the near boundary work area. The result of independent sample t-test showed that the gender effects found to be significant at the far boundary work area.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116743279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
