Asian knee were different from the European knee. A prospective morphometric study of the knee joint was carried out. One hundred (100) participants consisting of 50 males and 50 females were scanned using computed tomography equipment. The age of the participants vary from 19 to 38 years old, with height variation from 141cm to 182cm, and weight from 39kg to 110kg. The knee joints were reconstructed in three dimensions from the CT datasets and measurements were done using computational method. The anterior-posterior (AP) length and the medial-lateral (ML) width of the distal femur and proximal tibia were measured. For the distal femur, the average dimension for the anterior-posterior (fAP) is 60.7±4.7mm and for the medial-lateral (fML) is 69.7±6.1mm. For proximal tibia, the average dimension for the anterior-posterior (tAP) is 48.1±4.7mm and for the medial-lateral (tML) is 72.6±6.8mm. These data provide the basis for the development of femoral components for high flexion total or partial knee replacement for Malaysian population.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129944440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lesions are hyperintense lesion from tumour, acute infarction, haemorrhage and abscess, and hypointense lesion from chronic infarction and haemorrhage. Pre-processing is applied to the DWI for intensity normalization, background removal and intensity enhancement. Then, the split and merge algorithm is designed to segment the lesion. Histogram thresholding technique is used at each split level to detect pixels with either hyperintense or hypointense. Several statistical features are discussed and evaluated to select the best feature as homogeneity criteria. The analysis shows that mean and number of lesion pixels are the best homogeneity criteria. Hyperintense and hypointense lesions are segmented automatically by merging the regions that are homogenous according to the criteria.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116661109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The instability which is caused by weakened ligaments as well as worn cartilages makes the carpal bones to move freely, causing a painful condition. Wrist arthroplasty is one of the treatments for severe cases of Rheumatoid Arthritis of the wrist joint. This project involved biomechanical analysis of wrist arthroplasty in terms of its ability to provide carpal stability for replacement of the joint severely affected wrist with Rheumatoid Arthritis. The clinical symptoms of the skeletal disease such as the pathological changes of the bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendon as well as the load transfer were used to accurately simulate the wrist joint affected with Rheumatoid Arthritis. To do so, three dimensional models of these two wrist models were developed from computed tomography images which consist of 8 carpal bones, 5 metacarpal bones, the distal radius and ulna. The cartilages were developed based on the shape of the articulation and ligaments were simulated via springs. Hand grip action was simulated as the boundary conditions in which the compressive contact pressure were applied on the model with resultant force of 15.92N in magnitude, distributed over the 5 digits, applied on the metacarpals. Normal, healthy wrist joint was also modelled and functions as the control. Results showed that the stability and load transfer of the wrist after arthroplasty were successfully restored similar to the behaviour of the normal wrist joint. The carpal bones at the model of Rheumatoid Arthritis displaced higher compared to the wrist after treatment, due to the laxity of the ligaments. This high displacement hence leads to the instability of the wrist joint as well as the abnormalities of the load transfer whereby lower load transfer generated at the Rheumatoid Arthritis model. Meanwhile, the model after arthroplasty depicted good stability as well as well load transfer at the forearm in comparison with the normal healthy wrist. These indicate the reliability of the finite element analyses to the clinical findings. These simulations managed to provide the most accurate representations of hand grip action for the pathological wrist as well as the one simulating the treated wrist through arthroplasty. The models developed in this study can be used as a benchmark for simulating other complex human joints as well as simulating their pathological condition and a suitable surgical treatment. Through biomechanical simulation, this project has helped in the understanding of the wrist joint, the pathomechanics of Rheumatoid Arthritis associated with the joint and the development of implants for wrist arthroplasty.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129650368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have shown that the EEG signal has biometric potential because the signal varies from person to person and is impossible to replicate and steal. Data were collected from 10 male subjects while resting with eyes open and eyes closed in 5 separate sessions conducted over a course of 2 weeks. Features were extracted using the autoregressive (AR) model and analyzed to obtain the feature set. Results show that data from eyes open and eyes closed using 4 channels gave good classification rates of 96% and 97% respectively and that data recorded from 2 channels gave classification rates from 90% to 95%. Classification rates from 1 channel ranged from 70% to 87%. The average time taken for recognition was 0.38 seconds at the point of recognition. Based on these results, there is potential for implementation of an EEG-based biometric system.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114924777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It should be able to resist bacterial leakage. Colonization of bacterial in microgaps along implant-abutment interfaces will lead to inflammatory reaction. One of the factor which have been identified to produce microgaps is micromotion. This study was conducted to analyse micromotion and stress distribution on mating surface of internal conical and internal hexagonal implant-abutment connections. Three dimensional (3D) model of mandible around the first molar was reconstructed from two dimensional (2D) CT data scan. The reconstructed 3D model includes a layer of cortical bone, cancellous bone, mucosa, prosthesis of first molar and adjacent teeth. Dental implant body and two-piece abutment with different implant-abutment connection were designed and inserted separately to simulate the replacement of the first molar. Axial load were applied on the top centre of the prosthesis and on the adjacent teeth to simulate occlusal force. Micromotion was observed to be lower around internal hexagonal abutments compared to internal conical. However, internal hexagonal connection produce stress concentration at its vertices, thus increase the possibility to be fractured.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131131602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through this study, the stress distribution within bone around implant will be investigated under variation of implant lengths and surface conditions by using three dimensional finite element analysis. Six finite element models involving three different zygomatic implant lengths - 46.5 mm, 41.5 mm and 36.5 mm with a smooth surface and rough surface of implant body have been analyzed. Three dimensional models of craniofacial including soft tissue and prosthesis were constructed from computed tomography (CT) images datasets. The implant models were developed using computer-aided design (CAD) software and all models were analyzed via finite element analysis software. A 230N of vertical force was applied on top surface of prosthesis in second premolar region and a masseter load of 300N applied at zygomatic arch. The result showed that the increase of zygomatic implant length shows an ability to reduce both cortical and cancellous bone stress. Besides, the use of rough implant surface has resulted in reduction of stress value at bone-implant interface as well as at surrounding bone. The alveolar bone seems to play a lesser significant role in the zygomatic implant anchorage compared to the zygomatic bone.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132502971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Very often, Down syndrome children are associated with some impairment language ability, cognitive ability, fine motor, gross motor, self help and social emotional. Early childhood intervention includes screening for common problems, and vocational training can improve the development of children with Down syndrome. However, Early Intervention Program (EIP) is not widely and effectively implemented in Malaysia due to several obstacles. In this study, the language assessment and training will be prioritized, in which the support system will provide the most effective assessment and training method to the children. This software utilizes speech recognition technology, together with modified internationally recognized curriculum, implemented in C sharp programming language. The result of this study is expected to be beneficial and able to assist parents and trainers on effective language training for special children. In conclusion, an effective language assessment and training support system has been developed for the improvement of the children's language ability and their quality of lives in the long run.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128870514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In car seat design and development, posture of car drivers among others is a critical factor that has to be considered closely and effectively. A car driver controls the vehicle and his/her comfort and safety is important to avoid any road injury or unfortunate accident. The objective of this paper is to depict the subjective rating of the car seat design on drivers comfort preference. A total number of 45 Malaysian citizens were involved in this study. A subjective rating scale was used to determine participants' perception on the seat design and comfort. From the result of the rating scale, a rating percentage value is summarized for all three cars involved in the study. It was found also a significant difference value for the seat width, drivers' seat condition, arm comfort and whole body comfort parameters between the three sets of data.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130794974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
