Through the lens of urban planning and design, she explores the role of public art in making better cities, fostering community engagement and creating unique urban experiences. In her view, public art contributes to the identity, liveability and lovability of cities and serves as a landmark that enhances the city landscape and facilitates navigation. Eine Aufgabe der Kunstgeschichte ist es seither zu fragen, ob Kunst die historische Verankerung aktueller Krisen verdeutlicht. Stellen historische Gemälde wissenschaftsinformiertes Naturwissen bereit und/oder legen sie eine Sensibilität der Kunstschaffenden für ökologische Veränderungen nahe? Insbesondere die romantische Landschaftsmalerei wird vermehrt als Reflexion über die sich verändernden Erscheinungsweisen der Natur in Zeiten der Industrialisierung interpretiert; sie eignet sich als zentraler Untersuchungsgegenstand innerhalb der sogenannten Environmental Art History. Diese Ansicht steht in einem Kontrast zur früheren Interpretation einiger romantischer Maler, wie Joseph M. W Turner, als abstrakt und damit weltabgewandt. {"title":"Jean Painlevé: Thinking with Tentacles","authors":"Anne Hemkendreis, Jutta Wiens","doi":"10.55597/e9198","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.55597/e9198","url":null,"abstract":"Art and science are in constant dialogue in the work of Jean Painlevé, a French scientist and film-maker whose films are devoted to depicting underwater creatures in their aquatic environments. His 1928 movie The Octopus portrays a tentacular creature as a seductive protagonist that becomes an effective tool for scientific research and the dissemination of its results to a broader public. By inviting the viewers to participate in wonderous journeys into the ocean, the octopus functions as an epistemic object and fictional character alike.
