The estrous phase of all cycling patients was determined as \"diestrus\". Plasma estradiol and progesterone concentrations fluctuate within physiological variations. In all cases, not including those, pretreated with progestagen, histological signs of irregular hyperproliferation of uterine glands are obvious, closely related with enzyme histochemical aberrations and atypical endometrial estrogen receptor state. This is interpreted as indicative for prolonged periestrous estrogen induced effects, undergoing different stages of secretory transformation due to the species specific long lasting corpus luteum period. A comparable pathogenesis is supposed deriving from estrogen applications (e. a. after mismating) due to intensified hormonal stimulation and sensibilization of the endometrium, predisposing to ascendant infections by facultative pathogenic bacteria (e. a. E. coli, Streptococcus sp.). Patients without ovarian cyclicity, resulting from progestagen application, exhibit findings, that indicate hormonal imbalances: secretory hypertrophy, irregular regeneration, fibrous atrophy and rigid secretion, resembling those possibly occurring in women after long administration of oral contraceptives.</p>","PeriodicalId":23904,"journal":{"name":"Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. The wet weight: DNA-, the protein: DNA- and the RNA: DNA-ratio were determined. With the exception of the liver the content in DNA, RNA and protein increased to the age of 1123 days. The highest fresh weight: DNA ratio of 2041 was reached on the 1123rd day in the M.longissimus; the smallest (111) existed at this time in the spleen. In the liver the highest content in fresh weight, in DNA and RNA was found on the 180th day. The smallest increases in the content of DNA and RNA in the mentioned period were in the brain, the highest in the spleen, the liver and the M.longissimus dorsi. Simultaneously, the reticulocytes were subdivided into 10 maturation classes according to their fluorescence intensity. The maturation distribution can be characterized by a distribution quotient. Both the maturation distribution as well as the distribution quotient are considered to be useful as good indicators of erythropoietic activity. The investigation establishes, that the reticulocyte count and the maturation distribution of these six species can be determined quickly and easily. The distinct differences between the species reflect the maturation locus of the reticulocytes, which varies among the species (medullary or humoral type of maturation).</p>","PeriodicalId":23904,"journal":{"name":"Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Two similar groups were constituted: a group of bulls which were treated with potassium bromide (BT; n = 11) and another one which remained untreated (UT; n = 11). The treatment (736 mg potassium bromide/kg feed dry matter) was stopped 60 days before the slaughtering day. The treatment with potassium bromide induced a significant reduction in the rear engagements during the whole trial period (221 days), in direct attacks during the period A (from day 0 to day 53) and in side-on attacks during the period B (from day 54 to day 167). The daily weight gains, calculated for the whole trial period, were not significantly different between the two groups. Feed utilization was lower in treated bulls. During the period C (from day 168 to day 221), the sedative potency of potassium bromide seemed to be weaker than during the periods A and B. This might be due to the habituation to potassium bromide. On the basis of these results, we can conclude that the frequency of rear engagements and, during a restricted period of fattening, the frequencies of side and direct attacks are significantly reduced when potassium bromide (736 mg/kg feed dry matter) is used. The time spent for hay intake, the frequency of water intake (even if the time consumed at the drinking trough was the same) was reduced and the time during which the bulls were standing was prolonged by bromide.</p>","PeriodicalId":23904,"journal":{"name":"Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. It could be shown that nowadays' systems for analysis of ionized calcium (ORION SS-20, AVL 980, NOVA 2 and 8, ICA 1) yield reproducible values for human as well as canine blood. System-related differences point to a varying degree of interferences on the ion-selective electrodes used. The concentration of ionized calcium is strongly dependent on different preanalytic factors. Heparin leads to a concentration-related reduction of calcium ions in blood. This negative impact of heparin can be overcome by substitution of the solvent for CaCl2 (2.5 mmol.l-1) without meaningful falsification of the measured values.
